First time I'm checking this guy out after stumbling across Porcupine Tree. Can hear Dave Weckl, bit of Copeland, and Chad Wackerman in there, but nonetheless, a great drummer. Gonna be checking this guy out a bit more me thinks.
I just met him yestarday in a master class and he played this song to demonstrate the "rudiment" he always uses in fills and grooves (RLRRL which is a 5 note pattern that allows him to obtain a lot of effects even on 4/4). It was astonishing.
Gavin is a great drummer. Portnoy is a great drummer. Peart is a great drummer. Purdie is a great drummer. Etc, ad infinitum....music is not a contest. Just enjoy it, learn from it and be thankful that we have music as one of our means of expression.
Ok, this is now the second Gavin video in a row I have come to with a debate about Portnoy vs Harrison. It's really starting to grind my gears. Gavin is such a superior drummer in EVERY way compared to Portnoy. Sure, Mike was great in DT, but he has a very limited "bag of tricks". He's like an old dog, set in his ways, and not learning new tricks. Harrison, however, is constantly dropping jaws and progressing not only on a personal level but progressing the art of drumming itself. No contest!
I love this kind of drumming. Funky with some technical stuff going on. Dig the hi-hat roll at 1:54 where it looks like he's using 3 strokes w/his right hand and one "stroke" w/his left foot. So tight! So effortless!
the diference between them, one is american, the other is english!the first plays very well and have a lot of style, and the second plays very well(indeed) and shows being a simple person without cliches!...who are the best??
like most everyone i love gavin harrison too, but you cant compare him and mike portnoy. mikes background comes from metal and classic rock and gavins from big band and jazz. so their styles are very different which makes them both different. they are both true geniuses. but there's really no reason to compare the two with such different backgrounds and different styles of music played.
this is one of the ultimate tests of a great drummer; to be able to create a great groove, dislodge yourself from that groove, and then go back into that groove. Gavin Harrison even makes it groove when he dislodges himself, he's the man.
He MAY be genius, I suppose. However using simple displacement and mixed meters in music is not genius, it comes from education and practice. If he were able to play these with no musical background or without practice, it came uncannily naturally, that's genius.
@passion4drums A lot of people, like me, know about Gavin through Porcupine Tree. I'm guessing so does this guy because at least for me, I used to love Portnoy, because I listen to a lot of Dream Theater, which is how I first heard of PT.
@Stillbornzzz Not sure xactly, but suspect that there's a narrowness of perspective or experience that makes certain people latch onto what They are comprehending at a certain time, so that's who's "best", because of course what you think/feel/believe Has 2b best, otherwise you are lessthan. Reminds me of sports team loyalty..."your" team, so by association your now connected in a more intimate way, in your mind, with others who are morethan. All that then falsely opens up that narrowness.
The sickest part about this video is that the ENTIRE song is in 4/4 time. Yet with the displacement he makes it sound anything BUT 4/4. maniacal genius.
Wha? I have a degree in music performance and education. Drumset included. However, despite being well educated, I'm no genius. Genius implies a special inclination or unusually high natural capacity. I don't think Gavin is genius, although he's a monster drummer for certain..
