Fall short? It burned a hole through the earth. The dungeons were replicated on a ridiculous scale. If you want to compare games, the Witcher 2 totally destroyed dragon age in nearly every aspect, stealing even the idea's of an atmosphere of elves in poverty ect. The plot was non exsistant to the point of a lord of the rings joke in the first and the second I wont even go there. The perk tree was a joke and the hold your hand dialog with color coding just rubs salt on the wounds.
To be fair in the first Dragon Age game, you could only choose between 3 classes.
That is the one flaw I saw with the ME games... well that and you couldn't switch between party members... especially if Shep died.
The dungeons were the biggest (and in my opinion only) flaw. The reusing backgrounds was horrible.
There's no real main villain. The villain is the situation. I personally like the slow burn that they chose, it felt a lot more natural and engaging to me than the first DAO.
I honestly thought the "best character" you were going to mention was Imoen. As soon as you said "he" I knew you were talking about Minsc, though.
btw, I liked the clips you pulled from BG2; the only other things I would have mentioned is a short clip of the introductory scene in the first dungeon, and the following that the BG trilogy has gained in modding forums.
Just bought Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 2 (PS2) $40 And I'm greatful that, that's all I paid for it. Talk about a great looking and great playing game that's almost 8 yrs. old and still holds up well with today's Next-Gen console titles. I almost feel guilty that I walked away with an experience this great for under 50 bucks that some people pay damn near $200 or more for just to get a chance to look at it. As edBassmaster would say... "Some times you just gotta look at it. LOL!! :D
@ParanoiaCrabs Oh, crap!, you're right. I just realized this was a PC release. Oh well, I haven't bought a PC game since The Adventures of Willy Beamish when Babbage's considered $20 for it a bargain back then. Guess I'll just buy a GameCube instead. I've always wanted to play LOZ:Twilight Princess. :)
DA2 was absolutely rushed for money. EA is a public company and has to answer to share holders. Those share holders are always going to act according to what they think will make the most money. In this case they thought they could make more money by releasing a rushed game and riding off the success of part 1 than they would by spending more time and money to make DA2 a worthy sequel. I think you are being too nice in this review. I think they flushed the DA franchise down the toilet.
You have good points, but you miss some, for some reason 1) BG1 and 2 came out on PC only. DA1 and 2 were multiformat. Look at current PC only RPG's like The Witcher, Divine Divinity and Gothic, and we still see depth and sophistication. 2) You could see how DA1 was going to lead to DA2 due to ME1 versus ME2. 3) You must know, that in the late 90's , if a game was 90% about conversation and combat and mostly linear, it was called an Action-Adventure, not an RPG .So I dispute DA1& 2 as RPG's!
I completely agree with you Danny ... DA 2 was a good game and nothing tops BG2 ... i hope to see BG3 someday ... with playstyle exactly like BG2 only with graphics from today and a really great story ... THAT would be an awesome Game =)
Dragon Age 2 wants to use some core concepts in baldur's gate 2, but failed in every way, ends up as a streamlined crap. well, it's a fine game, but for the same company who made BG2, it's a huge shame
hey dude, that aint a conspiracy theory its basic marketing. multi million dollar developments have to see a return. make no mistakeall game game developers just want our money. the trick is to find the ones that deserve it. oh and i love baldurs gate 2. first time i played it i had a full party now im soloing it with a sorcerer and am halfway through the game. if game developers spent less time on graphics n more time on character development, story and acharacter customisation just like BG2
Well I agree with alot you say although I do think some of the arguments you complain about is also something that happens in DA:O, like party members raising back from the dead when the battle is over.
One of my biggest problems playing this game is that every cave, house, dungeon, path, looked the same. there was no feeling of going forward coz youve seen this before. i kinda memorized where they would hide stuff coz the place had the same layout.
liked it all the same but its hard playing a second play through
BG1 was in my mind the greatest RPG. By the time I got to BG2 I found it boring. I never even finished DA1 for the boringness of the combat and story. Oh! Another town where I have to wander around and do silly sidequests in order to level up sufficiently to deal with the real threat upon the land. Fantasy games should help you suspend reality but they shouldn't make you sacrifice common sense.
Have you ever rushed an essay for a college level class? You know it's kinda got everything, but it's definitely got some week spots and you know if you had just spent more time on it, it would be so much better?
Dragon Age 2 feels like a rushed essay/paper to me.
As for the idea of an experiment; I tried to get a friend of mine, 10 years my junior, to play Planescape: Torment. He lasted an hour. He couldn't handle how it looked and such and was just overwhelmed by how open it all was.
Agree totally, DA2 lacks the awesome depth that BG2 had. The characters are interesting but the way they structure it means you have to play Anders, and most of the time Varric as well. I also hate the fact you cant play anything but a human - i mean they went to all the trouble of creating a cool 4th race in the Qunari and you dont get to play them? HOw mean is that. The game not allowing you full customisation of the armor of your companions annoyed me also.
call Dragon Age a spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate 2 is just insulting to Baldur's Gate 2, in bg you cant face a group of enemies without a plan, in dragon age you just can go and kill everything, and the freedom mostly if you like throwing fireball to the beggars like me :). BG2 is epic, and dragon age is just another game, who will be replaced in 2 year or 3. PD: lich, drows, beholders, iron golems, mind flayer, vampires, irenicus that was epic men
What? Boo is outraged! See his fury! It's small, so look close. Trust me, it's there....mmm...Call Dragon Age a successor to Baldur's Gate 2 is just insulting to Baldur's Gate 2...in baldur's gate you feel fear of almost everything, if you dont make a plan before facing a group of enemy, they kill you, in dragon age, you can just go and kill everything. and the freedom in BG2 mostly if you like throwing fireballs at the beggars like me :). BG2 is a epic game and dragon age is just another game.
play nightmare mode trust me, there's NO such thing as NOT-TENSE. you're dying left and right unless you master all your characters, but i see what your saying, separating every battle bottlenecks the potential of this game, and makes it feel slightly retarded.
@FTWBroadcasting Baldurs gate 2 shadows of amn is a epic masterpiece,it seemed that the developers and team put their heart and soul into bg2 .The music, the story and not to mention voice actors such as JIM CUMMINGS AHHHHHHH.I keep on coming back to this game over and over again
@FTWBroadcasting Hey man, I'm a much younger generation gamer (15) and I think BG2 is the best RPG ever created. Every aspect of the game design was near perfect (if not perfect) I do not think the mechanics in the game are obtuse. (I am still a level 1 Necromancer in the first Baldur's gate though.) (Hehe, just got to be patient.)
I never played dragon age, but I do think that baulders gate 2 fell to similar problems (as far as i can tell) because i liked the original baldur's gate 1 more than the followings. Champions of Norath, if you have played it however, was my favorite game that was this type of game
yes it was rushed, yes it was kinda filler, but i think some of those things were done on purpose, they had the average gamer in mind. So, much of the fun heavy RPG micro management and heavy RPG dialogue was taken out to fit this new age of gamers. Now its like Fight-STORY-SOME RUNNING-fight some more-run some more-fight-story-fight. Gamers now a days want instant gratification. You can beat the game at lvl 20 for god sakes! i enjoyed it but i agree with you for sure. i hope DA3 is better.
I never played it. >.<
