  • He went on to run for Stanford, had a great College Career and made the Olympic team the same year Gabe Jennings made it. That's the kick he always was known for, clowning around was not part of his performing, he was the only one at that time that he could do that. Don't hate for a simply great performance, admire and applause

  • hahaha his second split is 1:56. thats just fuckin nuts. this guy must have been a hell of a 800 runner too

  • Holy shit!

  • It looks like he ran the last 800m in 1:58 or 1:59.

  • shit gets real at 230

  • 4 people should kill themselves

  • @Jammers0902 it's ok, it was the second through fifth place runners :p

  • @EscapeDummy lol

  • That's a nice trick. I'm going to try that.

  • Thats how you do it

  • what a move. that kid had guts

  • wow... i literally started yelling when he made that nasty move. that was a crazy kick

  • that was awesome! i bet the lead pack was like who the fuck is this and how fucking stupid is he? and then he won the race by over 100 meters. pure badassness

  • 1:56 in the back, that's fast enough to win districts in the 800 at my school

  • @nerdswith8guns

    ahhaha

  • Stember was an all-around great athlete. I remember he was clowning around in practice one day, walked over to the high jump pit and leaped over like 6'0". Me, I was just trying to clear 5'4". But then again, he was like a toothpick, so I think a stiff breeze might've helped me over the bar. j/k lol

Great run, though. Brings back memories. Michael always did have a great kick. And this way just a gutsy performance.

  • he could have broken 4 if he ran even slits

  • that kick is incredible! he's just like, 'screw this lead pace rotation crap. That lead runner's mental strength must have been destroyed after that almost instantaneous gap...

  • wow.... just...wow

    the heart

  • excuse me, but is anyone commenting on here ever a miler? they say he was clowning around, but first of all, he got boxed in at the beginning, and second of all, you don't waste your energy on the first two laps, the race is won in the last two, like he did.

  • @nerdswith8guns he did not get boxed in at the beggining

  • until it was broken a little bit more by...GERMAN FERNANDEZ! :D 4:00!!

  • Wow! he had enough heart to remain on his legs and standing at the end, too. That was an amazing kick! with 600m, he just took off! imagine if he had held it in until the last 400m instead, jeez... stember's the man

  • That's my Cousin right there

  • Okay really ! Who has the energy to run around and stand up after running that fast. I remember when I did the 800m I did the the German Fernandez - right when i crossed the finish line I fell to the ground out of breathe

  • omg insane

    but hall is betta lol

  • watever man he was goin for the win, there r other times to go at a true pace

  • What was he doing the first 800 meters? If he had that much of a kick, he should've kicked it up a tad bit and probably broke 4 minutes.

  • meh i could beat him o_O

  • Umm.... every 1 needs to remember Stember was a juinor in 1995 when he ran 4:04.00 he was hurt part of the 1996 season (sr. year) he also ran a 1:49.76 800m as a (sr)

  • It's incredible how after running a mile that fast, he still has enough energy to celebrate. Andrenaline's a beautiful thing.

  • how about you watch the video. er, lol. The first guy finishes at 4:06

  • uh dude.... watch the video... it's not 4:02 OR 4:22, it's a 4:04 like it SAYS IN THE DAMN TITLE

  • @23formikeonly You're an idiot.

  • i saw it in person - everyone's jaw dropped and people just gasped.

  • He might have broken 4 minutes even pace.

All that ability, and he wasted it clowning around.

  • How so?

  • his second 2 laps only took 1:57. i wanna see him run the 800m

  • the beginning takes 3 seconds so it is 4:04 because he finishes in the video at 4:07 with the rest of the video just the end!

  • OMG AMAZING I SCREAMED

  • Wow, that really did take me completely by surprise when he just burst into the front like that... Kinda gives me a wierd similarity to Emil Zatopek.

  • that was epic!!!!

  • truly amazing kick at the end!

  • hes not human...

  • thats a crazy stride.

  • wow those are some legendary strides! O.O

  • I used to race against him in high school. He would race the 1600 like that a lot...see ya with 600 left!

  • wow 2:30

  • dang! that must have sucked for the guys that were leading it the whole time haha.

  • just amazing. best kick ever.

  • nice fucken job i could never do dat really tho give me some tips please

  • WOW good job dude!

  • Comment removed

  • insane

  • Haha, at 2:56:

"He's trying to steal it on this lap because he doesn't have kick left."

  • webb turned out too be a wanna be! Will the next best miler step foward with some balls to beat the world class field!

  • Two words sir, German Fernandez.

  • Heck yes

  • wow!!! I have never seen a kick like that. My best time in 1983 was 4:30 and that won district and city in dallas. The best time for that metroplex was 4:14 from a guy named ck cartwright. He does not come close too this guy. Amazing!!

  • Reminds me of Prefontaine R.I.P

  • Oh no, Pre wouldn't wait until 600 to go to rip it. Pre was the type that pushed the pace right from the gun. If anything, Pre would have run 1:56/2:08 instead of the way Michael ran it. lol.

  • damn right

  • smart, smart runner

  • was this race at the pomona track?

  • damn that was a great finish

  • his last 100m was in like 12 seconds

  • Go to video time 3:53 and you will see that he is more than a few meters past the 100m start line.

Last 100m in 14 seconds at best.

  • o crap sry i subtracted it wrong sry lol

  • Wiag that guy's incredible!

  • that was sick it was like he got shot by an epipen in the middle of the race

  • epic run.

  • He ran his second split faster than probably 90 percent of kids could run the 800 period. Great job.

  • what a kick.

    wow...!

  • When Alan Webb was a junior (I think) he ran a 4:08 in 2:15 front 1:53 back.

    No lie.

  • Raimakusa you are a dumbass 4sec is huge at this distance im not saying that this guy didnt run a badass race but there is no question it is not as impressive as german fernandaz's 4min performance

  • I'm well aware that 4 seconds is a huge difference since I'm a distance runner as well, but just because German ran a better race you give him more credit? German's splits were constant. Stember was crazy enough to do 800 splits of 2:08 and 1:56. They shine in different areas. German can keep a constant pace and Stember could kick.

  • YEAH! Thats what I'm talking about... Like my coach always says, "Leave your nuts out on the track." But why did he have to retire? If the WR for the mile is only a 3:43 then he should have went after it.

  • that would of been 21 seconds to cut off with is about 200meters with is about 10% of the race with again is alot.

  • haha, the guys he passes were like wtf!?

  • WOW one of the craziest tactics i've ever seen >.>

  • That kick was beastly. I have a kick too but mine doesn't last 2 laps @_@

    more like...200 meters xD

  • That is crazy!!!

  • Thats nothing compared to a 4 minute mile ran by German Fernandez. Type in German Fernandez 4 minute mile on youtube

  • This was 13 years ago. Back then this was quite impressive. And I'm sure a 4 second difference doesn't make it nothing @_@

  • well sure, German Fernandez had perhaps the best double in H.S. history. But what is impressive about this race is the gutsy tactics used and the 2:08/1:56 splits. Plus, 4:04 is a bad ass time.

  • dang that was pretty crazy i gotta say ive never seen som1 kick like that before

  • wheres this guy now?

  • he prolly got done and was like oh shit what happened i blacked out

  • wow i have never seen such a good track runner wow that kick was amzing i kick on the last 400m and ym last 200 is like a 26 but that kid holy shit im speechless

  • holy shitt

  • i get better runs in my shorts

  • I saw him go out and I thought, "yep couldn't hold what he started." Then I watched the kick and now I can't really comprehend what just happened

    Great

  • that was beautiful when he just ran past them i bet they were like what the fuck

  • Me too dan71092

  • holy fuck... I wish I was lanky so I could be a monster at the mile = /

  • I got to meet Stember some time back. He's a great runner, but he's such an asshole. A little arrogant for my taste. Where are you now asswipe?

  • you seem like kind of a jerk yourself, but he retired FYI

  • I was always impressed with Stember myself...but knowing what I know about him now...I'm glad that Gruber, Webb, and Robison beat his ass in the 2004 trials. Karma really is a bitch.

  • At the start, when he let 5 people pass him after the first 100m, I knew something was up. He was toying with them. Boy, what I wouldn't give for a fraction of that talent.

  • amazing but a little conceited at the end

  • holy shit. now thats one good kick. the longest kick i can go for is 300m but thats it this guy is crazy. and it sure takes alot of guts to do such a crazy attempt as he just di he is truely amazing

  • Danng, he left everyone

  • He screwed up their confindence in winning by just blowing by them

  • wat a BEAST

  • i hate all that is you.

  • Yes, boo self promotion. Leave your comment to the guy is good.

  • I ran with Mike in High School,.. he is,.. and is still amazing,.. I remember him breezing by me with 400 meters to go... It was a awesome competing with you Michael!! Thanks for the good memories!!! D'Ottavio

  • I was watching the kid in the red. And I knew before he started to kick that he would probably win. Just by looking at his form. But I didn't expect him to have a massive kick 600m before the finish.

  • what a monster

  • sick and disgusting. i would hate to be everyone else right then.

  • holy crap monsterous kick

  • wow that was about a mile and a half big up the skiny man

  • Holy f*ck, that was the SICKEST kick ive ever seen, Pre was a front runner so that wasnt really his style, but the kick at the last 600 was genuine prefontaine class right there.

  • prefontaine's kick? wtf? how about them olympics?

  • wats ur point....that was one race and he was shooken up by what the terrorists did

  • jesuit represent

  • omg!

  • and he still had energy left, damn im surprized he diddnt collapse at the finish

  • STOP PRE! That was an amazing last 800.

  • Stember recently broke 4 minutes in the mile. I believe he's done it before, but it was just worth noting.

  • he just said, "screw you guys, i'm goin' home."

  • Damn, hopefully hes gone under 4. I think he ran ~53s 400 when he kicked.

  • wow

  • he wasn't even that tired!

  • CoughPrefontaineCough

  • holy shit that was one fucking amazing kick, at like 1000m into the race i was like woa whose that red guy, and is he going to hold that pace? AND HE DID! holy shit!

  • live the 4th beeotch!

  • Pre Lives

  • "He's trying to steal it on this lap because he probably doesn't have a next lap!"

    ...

  • Whats up Alok... this is Colin... anyways awesome vid... INCREDIBLE KICK, i can't believe the anouncer wrote him off like that...what a douche

  • ya seriously haha he showed that anouncer and btw alok its michael

  • I know. That announcer was a douche!
