Great piece of kit, was recommended to get this camera to start out in photography, so am doing so for Christmas! :) Lens adapters may be limited to the NEX series but there is a lovely little adapter which allows you to attach all lenses produced for Nikon right on to it which i think is a brilliant idea. Cant wait to get my hands on this beauty of a camera.
People now, think that if you have a small camera, you're not cool at all. You need to have a big Nikon or Canon to be like everyone, but i think that the Sony nex-5 is freakin' awesome, and so goodlooking :)
This is a great camera! And because it has infrared, you can do Time Lapse Photography with this camera. Check out this device for doing just that: TempusNEX (copy to address bar) : tempus.bymac.org
well i found the best custom BAG for sony NEX 3/5. It has an aluminium frame inside so you can drop it and sit on it :) And on the ouside, looks like a regular small wallet bag. So nooen gonna steal your camera. Check it out at: NEXbag.bymac.org
I have an NEX 5. And it is a cracking little camera. Ok it doesnt do photos as well as a Cannon D5 nor is its videos as good either. But at the price point it is a great all round piece of kit. And the 3d photos it can take are fantastic.
If I mount the NEX-5 with the LA-EA1 adapter and the Sony SAL-50F14 (50 mm 1,4) or the Sony AF-DT 50/1,8 SAM - will I loose the ability to autofocus while shooting/recording??
(Really thankful for answer! I am recording dancevideos, so autofocus is really important to me.. But I want a blurry background so that's why the 50 mm 1,4 or 1,8 are on the table for me...)
ok so is this camera good for taking action shots of skating and paintball and hd videos for skating and paintball. and is the fish eye lense attachment good on this camera?
Why are people even comparing this with a DSLR?! Hello!?! It's not even comparable....
This camera is NOT made for a dslr replacement, it is suppose to serve the market in between compacts and dslr. It offers more control over compact but lesser than a dslr. You pay premium for the quality you get which is CLOSE to dslr but not quite, but because of the fact that it is MUCH SMALLER and LIGHTER.
Was stuck on this and the Samsung NX10 but apparently the sensor is better on this one than the Samsung. Hmm =/ Also I wasn't super impressed with the sound & video quality of the Sammy. It looked good but lagged when panning and it records sound in mono. Most likely going Sony(thing really needs to go on sale though!)
i have to admit i just got the A390 sony the only difference is that it doesnt record video and that its biger i love my camera but i have to admit that having a smaller one would be easier for me to take more pictures.... Every time i stand next to my camera thinking to my self and planing to my day to see where will my camera end up :P lol
But i still want High quality performance i dont mind that the ISO button is hard to find but does it still provide High quality performance like the A390?
I have the Nex 5 with two interchangeable lenses. Up to present, it has been a very good buy and it does what it says on the can. Small is beautiful and this camera is small but it's size belies it's advanced functions and versatility. It is not to be sneered at. I challenge everyone to at least pick one up and give it a fair trial. You won't be disappointed!
is having greter optical zoom important or a greater mega pixel....?
coz i am stuck with two cameras......
this one (nex5) and the dsc h55. the h55 has a greater optical zoom.....so i am stuck with a dellema here on which to buy >_< . Plz enlighten me with ur wisdom .. xD
I'm a film maker and i use this and my nikon d3100 for my shoots, however, if i wanted to do profesinal films that i could take to festivals or have for general realse. I would stick to my d3100 soley because that does 24p where as the nex5 doesnt. If there was a firmware or hack that allows the nex to do 24fps (or 25) then i would certianily have it around for profesinal shoots
did he really call that crappy little dslr a big gun?? well, the nex + 18-200 isn´t smaller than a dslr anyway..and more expensive than a low-end dslr with 18-55 kit + 55-200 for example..
@rrjavierr The lens have the worst optical distorsion in a comparative at a "SUPERFOTODIGITAL" spanish Magazine at the December 2010 number. Compared with an olimpus EPL1, Panasonic G2, Samsung NX10.
thats not a bad thing @ the end he's saying a beginner will have to shell out the same amount of cash ok.... and? lol spending $650.00 for a big ass camera that a lot of people don't like doing already. I rather spend that money and get this gem of a camera and like a lot of beginners not knowing what I am doing theres seems to be a lot of helpful tools on the camera itself. I think overall this is the better choice if you ask me.
@highchase84 yep thats true..but for me..I really do like this camera since its compact and not bulky like my canon dslr..but at the same time i also rather stick with the bulky camera than switch to this.....lens choice is little..and I prefer the my normal view finder rather than the fully LCD...if the LCD fails you...you still have ur view finder....hey what do I know..i just love old school photography..for beginner its a good choice...but a waste of money..so just upgrade to amateur dslr
@highchase84 If you get a entry level Nikon, they come with a guide mode. And really, DSLRs aren't that heavy. I just got the D3100 and it's incredibly easy.
It's included but you choose to keep it on (there's an accessory port at the top) or keep it off(comes with a little storage box that clips onto the strap)
Check out the update from Photokina trade show … new firmware update:
1. with adaptor you can enable autofocus on Alpha lenses (Sony DSLR) lense
2. menu shortcuts to ISO, White Balance etc.
3. new lenses (including Zeiss prime) … good thing, cause lenses seem to get negative comments for being too soft
Prices … in London UK 499 GBP … if you haggle a bit you can probably get both lenses package for about 650 GBP … at Heathrow airport duty free Sony store I saw it for 675GBP ...
I hate the noisy shutter on this camera ... impossible to use when doing candid street work while trying to remain unobtursive.. It was a deal breaker for me......
I've been waiting for this kind of camera for 9 years, but do I have to wait another 9 years for a touch screen version (with dual powered mode: display only OR inc. touch)?
DSLR have many more settings than a SLR abit like the F1 steering wheels where every year more controls were added and thus making the whole thing more user unfriendly.
If Apple make a DSLR, you will be surprised how wrong are the Nikon and Canon cameras are.
But then theres always a place for tactile buttons, (F1 always used it due to it vibration nature) but that why I prefer dual powered mode. Buttons are too slow and I just don't have the time nor the patient like paporazzi fidling with their preset whilst camping someone else back gardan waiting whole day just to take few photos
I´m trying to decide if I stay with the NEX-5 or wait for this NEX-VG10. The first intention of my purchase is for video amateur production (you tube), but NEX-5 comes with the all in one package and is very portable... what do I truly sacrifice for the video feature if I buy a NEX-5 to start with compare to the NEX-VG10?
i currently got this and got separately the microphone for it ( + 199 ). best camera i have ever used for the size. awesome pictures and videos. beautiful 5/5
Haha... Whatever! Its still like using a point and shoot digital camera... How about shutter speed? FAIL! It also has a limited zoom! Also IMO, who cares about it being small? With its size, i will probably be dropping it most of the time and its like dropping $700+ or $800+ in a shit hole.
You're correct that the price the amateur photographer would have to spend would be close to a regular dslr, but you forget that at that price point, the entry level of dslr's do not have Video, background defocusing, live view modes (that focus fast either), iso modes above 1600 (12800 in the case of the NEX), and 7fps max. Please find a $600 dslr that does all of that. Not even the Pen1 from Olympus can match it at the same price and camera segment! ;)
T1i or 500D only has up to ISO 6400 T2i 550D can go to ISO 12800 yes, but both only sport up to 3.7 FPS, not the 7fps.
Next, video on both require manual focusing (not really usable for novices, unless you're shooting non-moving or still videos).
Also, both cameras are 699$ and 899$ respectively. Not $599
Like I said, good luck trying to find a entry level DSLR that does what the NEX series cameras can do for the price. Also, if you look at the DPREVIEW review of the camera...
@shl0791 well you do have a point with price but remember something also. The NEX has a much more complex way to change ISO, shutter speed, and f-stop. If i was to shot a sport event with an NEX, i won't do so good because of the things i have to do to make a change and sport doesn't stop for me to get ready.
@juanestrad You'd fall into the category of a dslr user, where you need the controls. Not everyone will want NEX.
But anyways, put camera in M mode, and use the directional DOWN button, and you can access quickly the Shutter speed, aperture, and Exposure comp. That part is not slow. ISO would be slower (if that) to get to, but complex? Have you played with one? Hit top menu button, camera/brightness icon, and select ISO speed. 1 extra step.
So im an OK photographer and currently i have a compact nikon coolpix s550. and i want to get a DSLR. which one would you suggest- Canon Rebel T1i or the Sony Nex-5? What I dont like is that i find myself using macro and telephoto alot and so far sony only has a 16mm and 18-55mm for the NEX series and canon has a full range of lenses available...
@redflame183 canon t1i, if your getting into real photography t1i is a better choice, it give you the ability for more accessories, lens, flashes and the ability to become pro. NEX cameras are for people who wants to switch from a point and shoot into something more better without compromising space, T1i has easier controls and menus, and it has a viewfinder.
If I were to start professional photography, would this be a good choice? I don't really like the size of the big ass DSLRs, and this one looks perfect to me. The burst mode really is hooking me onto this camera.
Am sure if i get this ? It's not long before its left on the shelve. Now thats not a dis to the camera, its just the way it shoots next to a Canon 5d mark ii with its 24-70 etc. which belong to my partner. She's the photographer . Maybe i'll wait till they create a few more lenses.
@tippyten Am sorry but i fell around laughing at yor comment about my comment. as am sure you can tell, i have no idea what am talking about. apart from the fact that i totally support her and it has to be one of the most beautiful creative skills i know about, my partner screamed( Loud) when i accidently dropped one of her lenses. am off now ,but your reply was bang on.
Personally, I don't prefer DSLR in this type, even though it is convenience and have better specs when compared to Sony Alpha 3 series, but it just seems kinda wrong DSLR with this kind of body. Well, it depends on individual needs.
I think sometimes they think by packaging the most features in a camera they'll be better off. People who want this kind of camera expect something lightweight but with good perfornance, and the basics like a viewfinder. The HD video is nice bit it's not why you buy a camera for in the first place.
im in the market for a sub $1,000 HD video camera, and if what everyone says is true- this camera with a 18mm image sensor takes better video than sonys brand new cx-350v and cx550v video cameras that have sensors 3 times smaller???
@Jthumper jah that is what I've just realised.. bought a cx550 and a letus mini 35 DOF for interchangeable lenses in May.. the nex-7 will do higher shooting rates, coming out in september from what I can tell
$650 is a flaw? I don't think entry level DSLR comes with 1080 movie shoot and that kind of panoramic shot. True little inconvenient to use because of the limited buttons.
to people deciding between this and a actual dslr, get the dslr not this. but if you want dslr quality in a little body go for it. but if your truly into photograhy get a dslr so many more things you can do with it
@arnoldgd84 the higher the number, the more zoom you get.
If there is no dash, that means you can't zoom in or out at all. So with the 16, you can't zoom, with the 18-55, you get zoom, but you wont be able to zoom out as far.
I'd get the 18-55, unless you are planning on buying a new lens right away.
Thanks for the friendly advice. :). I won't rush into it. I do love my T1i but I noticed the color noise in my first shots right away. Still, usually the pics were nice! From the pics I've seen, the T2i has gotten rid of the noise. So I am thinking about the T2i. No doubt Canon makes great cameras, but this Tiny Sony wow! I had the Sony R1which also had an APS C size sensor and I loved it, but this one is light years ahead and has usable pics to 3200iso
I'm selling my Canon T1i DSLR to buy the Sony Nex-5. The noise on the Canon is bad. I compared images from the Sony to the Canon on Imaging Resource's comparometer and the Sony has no color noise but the Canon is bad with this. I noticed this when I got my Canon but thought I had no choice. Now with this Sony, I am so excited. I can't wait to sell the Canon and can't wait until the Nex5 comes out
I was thinking about a T2i but then I figured the Sony is wayyyy smaller and I believe the photo quality will be the same and maybe better (using the basic Canon lenses on the T2i (18-55mm kit lens).
@RawFedSkye smaller means less stable shot. photo quality will still look good but not as good as the cannon. also if u were to go with the t2i you should not get it with the 18-55mm lens it is horrible for video and you can most likely purchase it in a kit with another lens. canon gives you a lot more control in the video mode and more essential still photo controls! dont rush into a decision. go and try them out and then you will know what you want! good luck!
Good quick review. I'm looking to switch from a Panasonic TZ7 to something like this. Very informative with the drawbacks of the lenses etc. How do Sony DSLR lenses compare to the more common Nikkon/Cannon ones?
good photographers can compose great shots with even a camera phone. But if you want the most performance for your money, I would suggest the Nikon for its high ISO capabilities. I have to say...for NOW, nikon has the best iso performance of either sony, pentax, or canon. I think this NEX 5 would be great for beginners as it is discreet enough to take anywhere so they can have as much practice composing shots rather than worrying about ultra high performance.

@freekeydude2009 A DSLR with 10mpixels vs a 16mpixel compact will still outperform the compact every day of the week.
To many mpixels actually makes the camera worse because it will be totally useless with bad light.
If you want to point and shoot the h55 is great camera but if you actually want to take pictures NEX5 will run circles around the h55.
If you only going to use the camera during holidays and family moments, the h55 is a better choice because of it´s size and simplicity

Watch the film from NEX-3 or NEX-5 which is with fast action. You will see what I'm talking about.
PS: Sorry for my English, I was trying to write as good as I can.

@Pici3k 7fps is for stills, this camera shoots 1080 at 60fps for videos.
anderm3 1 year ago
@anderm3 So why he talked that it shoots 7fps video?
Pici3k 1 year ago
@anderm3 No, it doesn't. It shoots at 25fps and translates it to interlaced 60fps... which is actually SAD.

In the latest firmware update from Sony, you gain the Auto Focus feature when using the adapter for other Lenses.

Guesswhokk 1 year ago
But then theres always a place for tactile buttons, (F1 always used it due to it vibration nature) but that why I prefer dual powered mode. Buttons are too slow and I just don't have the time nor the patient like paporazzi fidling with their preset whilst camping someone else back gardan waiting whole day just to take few photos

I´m trying to decide if I stay with the NEX-5 or wait for this NEX-VG10. The first intention of my purchase is for video amateur production (you tube), but NEX-5 comes with the all in one package and is very portable... what do I truly sacrifice for the video feature if I buy a NEX-5 to start with compare to the NEX-VG10?

dabigjokeoftheday 1 year ago
You're correct that the price the amateur photographer would have to spend would be close to a regular dslr, but you forget that at that price point, the entry level of dslr's do not have Video, background defocusing, live view modes (that focus fast either), iso modes above 1600 (12800 in the case of the NEX), and 7fps max. Please find a $600 dslr that does all of that. Not even the Pen1 from Olympus can match it at the same price and camera segment! ;)

Canon eos 500D and 550D 0o?
Mischor 1 year ago
@Mischor
Also, if you look at the DPREVIEW review of the camera...
shl0791 1 year ago
@shl0791
Okay i can see your point. ;)
Mischor 1 year ago
@shl0791 well you do have a point with price but remember something also. The NEX has a much more complex way to change ISO, shutter speed, and f-stop. If i was to shot a sport event with an NEX, i won't do so good because of the things i have to do to make a change and sport doesn't stop for me to get ready.
juanestrad 1 year ago
@juanestrad You'd fall into the category of a dslr user, where you need the controls. Not everyone will want NEX.
But anyways, put camera in M mode, and use the directional DOWN button, and you can access quickly the Shutter speed, aperture, and Exposure comp. That part is not slow. ISO would be slower (if that) to get to, but complex? Have you played with one? Hit top menu button, camera/brightness icon, and select ISO speed. 1 extra step.
shl0791 1 year ago
I could consider buying this one if it would have an optical viewfinder.

So im an OK photographer and currently i have a compact nikon coolpix s550. and i want to get a DSLR. which one would you suggest- Canon Rebel T1i or the Sony Nex-5? What I dont like is that i find myself using macro and telephoto alot and so far sony only has a 16mm and 18-55mm for the NEX series and canon has a full range of lenses available...
redflame183 1 year ago
@redflame183 canon t1i, if your getting into real photography t1i is a better choice, it give you the ability for more accessories, lens, flashes and the ability to become pro. NEX cameras are for people who wants to switch from a point and shoot into something more better without compromising space, T1i has easier controls and menus, and it has a viewfinder.

its a great camera, but doesnt have video mode
thats what makes this camera a "10" in my book the
digital video in full HD and stereo is where this camera
really shines. As a mater of fact its better HD video than
my expensive Digital camcorder i have.
cant go wrong with this package
tippyten 1 year ago
Am sure if i get this ? It's not long before its left on the shelve. Now thats not a dis to the camera, its just the way it shoots next to a Canon 5d mark ii with its 24-70 etc. which belong to my partner. She's the photographer . Maybe i'll wait till they create a few more lenses.
Drstoo1 1 year ago
@Drstoo1 Why are you comparing a $650 Sony camera to a
$2,800 professional camera?
Normaly when peoople compare things, they usualy compare things of the same
price range. whut up wit dat
as far as waiting for them to create more lenses, you can use any A frame lens
on the market if you get the A-moubt lens adapter. For me thats fantastic since
i have piles of A mount lenses.

Personally, I don't prefer DSLR in this type, even though it is convenience and have better specs when compared to Sony Alpha 3 series, but it just seems kinda wrong DSLR with this kind of body. Well, it depends on individual needs.

i bought the camera and i returned it for a t1i, the nex is still not as flexible as a full dslr
reneir0492 1 year ago
I think sometimes they think by packaging the most features in a camera they'll be better off. People who want this kind of camera expect something lightweight but with good perfornance, and the basics like a viewfinder. The HD video is nice bit it's not why you buy a camera for in the first place.
helenlundeberg 1 year ago
im in the market for a sub $1,000 HD video camera, and if what everyone says is true- this camera with a 18mm image sensor takes better video than sonys brand new cx-350v and cx550v video cameras that have sensors 3 times smaller???

If you will only use your camera in auto mode with the kit lens well the Sony Nex is better for you than a DSLR.

$650 is a flaw? I don't think entry level DSLR comes with 1080 movie shoot and that kind of panoramic shot. True little inconvenient to use because of the limited buttons.

@Rathinko nikon d3000 better quality dont let them fool you with 14mp who cares, 10 like the d3000 gives you better low light
ithree6mafia 1 year ago
@ithree6mafia
No, not realy. The NEX 3/5 has the better sensor. The Nikon D3000 has so much old technology inside, if i had the choice i weold by the NEX 3/5.
You dont know anything about cameras from other brands, but they are all soo bad. Nikon is the best. Right?

whats the difference between 18-55mm lens and 16mm lens?
arnoldgd84 1 year ago
@arnoldgd84 the higher the number, the more zoom you get.
If there is no dash, that means you can't zoom in or out at all. So with the 16, you can't zoom, with the 18-55, you get zoom, but you wont be able to zoom out as far.
I'd get the 18-55, unless you are planning on buying a new lens right away.
forrest225 1 year ago
@arnoldgd84 18-55 is a zoom lens, 16mm is only one view, the 16 shows what a human eye would see, well about what a human eye would see

@Schoolsucks
RawFedSkye 1 year ago
I'm selling my Canon T1i DSLR to buy the Sony Nex-5. The noise on the Canon is bad. I compared images from the Sony to the Canon on Imaging Resource's comparometer and the Sony has no color noise but the Canon is bad with this. I noticed this when I got my Canon but thought I had no choice. Now with this Sony, I am so excited. I can't wait to sell the Canon and can't wait until the Nex5 comes out
RawFedSkye 1 year ago
@RawFedSkye y not get a t2i?
schoolsucks1234545 1 year ago
@schoolsucks1234545
I was thinking about a T2i but then I figured the Sony is wayyyy smaller and I believe the photo quality will be the same and maybe better (using the basic Canon lenses on the T2i (18-55mm kit lens).
RawFedSkye 1 year ago
@RawFedSkye smaller means less stable shot. photo quality will still look good but not as good as the cannon. also if u were to go with the t2i you should not get it with the 18-55mm lens it is horrible for video and you can most likely purchase it in a kit with another lens. canon gives you a lot more control in the video mode and more essential still photo controls! dont rush into a decision. go and try them out and then you will know what you want! good luck!

Laxe84 1 year ago
Great vid. One question.
Should I get a nikon or Sony?
eliteRC 1 year ago
good photographers can compose great shots with even a camera phone.
