Most oddball video I have ever seen. Waters singing Syd's part, Gilmour harmonizing (in places where the vocal is solo...wait a sec, WHAT'S GILMOUR DOING THERE?), and barrett nowhere to be seen. Have we all gone insane?
Scarecrow is among other pieces they wrote in the early days a progression you see how they are developing it is the same like with a child learning to walk and speak there something in the music of Pink Floyd the feeling of sadness
there is nothing wrong about that. Whoever never experienced pain and sadness will not be able recognize happiness. But now after all these years listening digesting their lyrics i can say i got the point it feels so relevant. You`ve to listen to all of it.
Not really...it was the other way round. their music got a lot more complicated over the years. It turned from jamming with strange sounds and awesome psychadaelia to practically prog-rock with amazing guitar solos. The lyrics went from jolly nonsense to dark, complex story lines. Just listen to The Wall, a concept album, a billion times more complex than any song they did with Syd. Especially songs like The Scarecrow, this song is the meaning of simple. But I do agree, it's all sick
I have to disagree. While "The Wall" is certainly a complex and brilliant concept album it's music is built around very simple chords and changes.
One could hardly call "Astronomy Domine" simplistic. It was the song Floyd built their foundation from. (and their Golden Age from '67-73), and nothing is as brilliant as "Arnold Layne", structurally and in originality.
Yeah, the chords in Atronomy dimine are actually quite simple, it's just like E, F and G or something, with a few Majminor7 chords in there...there is a whole lot of changes but they're all improvised. It's just wonderful psychadelic madness. I guess it's not exactly a simple song, but anything from Dark Side of the Moon or Wish You Were Here is much more complex...I guess you are right in a way. But I guess they're both complex, just in different ways.
@giorgiakerr its exactly this whole lot of changes ,these unexpected change of cords the dissonant harmony ,the chromatic passages in my opinion make astronomy domine much more chalenging harmonically and the timig very unusual, someting very innovative,new...ground breaker in my opinoon......no way wish you were here is more complex than astronomy domind,or interstellar overdrive.wish you wish you here is a song used to teach begginers, the wall is also so much predictable harmonicly.but is good
sad that most Floyd fand don't even know about this stuff... they get so caught up in The Wall and DSotM.... not that those albums are not good... but there is so much more to PF....
yeah, The Wall and DSotM are good but they're not the best. Piper At the Gates of Dawn is probably my favourite Floyd album if I had to pick one but I really do like pretty much all of them. I also really like Animals just because of the general message of the lyrics. The music was less experimental but the lyrics were great.
That´s sad Syd is not there. Any way good to see those guys young and still fresh before their ultimate success. Roger is cool as always...and thats good to see that bass playing with a bow. :-O
I'm also quite sad Syd's not there. :( I mean, he wrote the damn song...
Roger's not playing the bass with a bow. It's a stick, looks like a branch. He's just hitting the strings with it. If they're properly muted, it gives off a percussive sound. But this sound can't be heard in the recording anyway - there is NO BASS in this song. I guess he picked up a stick and started banging his bass strings just for show.
I love his Rickenbacker bass - that is just beautiful.
I stand corrected - it's not a stick or a branch, you may be right in saying it's a bow. But ther's still no sound coming out of it, the recording has nothing like this.
At the outro of the song starting at 1:34 you can hear some strings (along with the guitar, and the synth which prevails throughout the whole song). Roger is seen using the bow in his Rickenbacker as if emulating the sound of the strings, but in the recording it is NOT an electric bass played with a bow, and definitely not a rickenbacker anyway (they have a very particular sound).

The music was more complex yet rougher during the Barrett era and grew simpler and more polished later on. It's all good.
