Wow, this cat's behaviour is bizarre. Totally casual about two guys standing there talking a few feet away. Such a fearless cougar could never be left to hang around a popular hiking trail.
Was the videographer in danger? Well, I don't think any cougar in its right mind would make a face-on attack on 2 men in broad daylight. They hunt from ambush. However, this cougar's acting so weird and nonchalant, you have to wonder if it was in its right mind! :-(
@linuxrules04 Oh come on now.. considering the situation they were in.. I'm pretty sure anybody would be shaking like a leaf! I would be! I saw one once when I lived in Colorado... it walked in front of our car.. we saw it and stopped.. and it just continued to meander across the street with a look of "what are you looking at??" Lol! With it's tail.. it was easily as long as the car was wide! I was seriously glad to have the protection of a car between me and that cat! Was an amazing experience!
That cougar was only there because of a forest fire that took place a couple hours up the highway, there was also an attack on a young girl by another cougar that same week , do not be turned off of this trail by this video, I go to the first peak every weekend and never run into anything more than a couple of squirrels or chipmunks ( whatever the hell those things are) at the top
@Purifiedinfire humans aren't cougar prey.....if it's hungry (I mean really hungry) and struggling for food, then it will maybe ambush a human. But, it won't just attack a human for the sake of attacking a human. The only other reason may be that it wants to protect itself. Humans are the only ignorant species that kill for stupid reasons like money, carpets, and a hole wrath of other inexcusable motives...
Actually, in Squamish a couple weeks (maybe a month ago?) a cougar ambushed a mountain biker. Didn't maul them or anything, just pounced on them, knocked them off their bike, and ran off. Biker escaped with a few bruises.
@NateDoggOGXV Maybe it made a mistake and thought the human was prey.....As you said, it didn't maul him, it let him go after and just ran off. Animals aren't prone to mistakes you know! Also, when you go somewhere a cougar may be, they also have survival instincts to protect their territories. I can't give you a definitive answer but all I would suggest is that if a human goes in cougar territory, you should live with the consequences of your decision!
this cougar attacked a dog, what breed was it? i have a 170# Sarplaninac that i would love to see this cougar tangle with. his fur is so dense the cats teeth would never erach the skin and once that cat feels the first bite which is like getting hit with an iron bar it's over for kitty !!!!!
@use2slam2 Any dog would get obliterated by a cougar with conviction.....Do you realise how fast and powerful these animals are? Oh my goodness that looks exciting and scary. We had a bear and her 3 cubs cross our path a few months ago, but I would have rather had them then a cougar.
If you are truly the source of a cougar attack, it wouldn't really do you any good to act as big and loud as possible. This is the strategy for a bear more or less. A cougar is accustomed to taking down larger than humans, so the size thing is not an upset for it, plus as mentioned earlier, it is an ambush predator. There are many occasions where a cougars prey doesn't even have time to react to the lightning strike. Getting large is just an act of meager confidence.
hate to disagree...but take a bear and lion workshop from folks who know, man
i did.....with bears (and i've encountered them in the wild) one does silence themself, and slowly back away. with lion, you do make noise and appear large. that is the correct approach.

Why would they even go there to begin with? Sheesh! Humans are so unbelievably dumb!!! They risk their life and then they blame it on those animals for attacking them.
With cougars, you're supposed to make yourself as big and noisy as possible. They're ambush predators and strongly prefer prey that doesn't fight back. If you make yourself big and scary, they'll usually run off unless they're defending cubs or the like.
@Filmguy25 I love animals but if you have a dog then don't take it where a cougar may be. People have backyards, they can walk their dog on the sidewalk. They can even go to a local public park. Why take your dog on a route that may encounter big cats? and then the big cat pays the price for being pushed out of its own territory? If this cougar was shot, then our race just shows how primitive and stupid we actually are. Look how beautiful it is! LEAVE THEM ALONE!!!
So yheah i live in Squamish and the people that filmed this are Twats!
Seriously Dx my god you're so fucking stupid. And just for the reacord these cougars are used to people, they aren't afraid of us, provoking it would be a fucking moronic thing to do. I'm amazed that the thing didn't rip of their faces right then and there. That cougar was not afraid of them and would have attaked them if they had made themselves known to it. They should have fucking backed away and ran for it.
this is sad, i am not sure they know why they are attack ppls pets and obvisouly not afraid of ppl, bet its got something to do with food shortage and the mass construction going here
Awesome video and beautiful animal. A real shame they've been entering into conflicts with people as of recent. You're very lucky to have gotten the chance to see one in the wild!
Parker get real you wouldn't want to face down a dangerous dog (pit bull) on the loose without a weapon. You don't want to mess with a ravenous cougar that might have a cub around. The only thing that I find revolting is the fact you would walk a dog in the woods with animals like that prowling in the shadows. I would have been walking away from that animal maybe looking for a river to get in and calling a park ranger because climbing a tree isn't going to be much help.
Good point. If you bring your dog into the forest that's fine, but understand the risks of doing so. It's a shame to see a wild animal like this shot on account of someone's house pet.
I agree with LongHull. All it takes is a claw in the neck and it's over. The cats in squamish are pretty crazy, not easily intimidated. If you wanna try and scare one of go for it and put your neck on the line, but don't critise a good decision.
yikes yesterday i had to bike back home from Brennan Park @ 8:00 good thing me and my other friend ran intoanother friend and got home safely but i cant believe theyres so many cougars out there!
im sure they understand its unsafe for them.. its a freaking mountain lion. but the guy whos dog it was is right there, im sure he wasnt gonna leave the scene, which would end bad, since cougars attack from the rear and are very very unlikely to attack you if your facing them. i would of stayed put too. good video
Guess Darwin's theory failed in this case. Two guys jovially chatting not far from a ~ 130 lb carnivore that's just attacked. Lucky you're alive. Maybe not next time. 'Course, maybe one of you were armed and this is why you were so nonchalant. Or I guess this was what the dog was good for- draw the animal away from you. Tough way to treat a pet.
I heard this morning that the dog is dead now. The person describing the attack is the owner of the dog . I just captured the video right after it happened.
We used to smell cougar piss on the trails above Britannia Beach from time to time, but that was way back in the 70s... Haven't heard of so many sightings at once. Thanks for posting this great video, though I hope it doesn't put us off hiking the Chief and Elfin Lakes this summer as we'd planned.
It is cool to see a video of a cougar, but you really shouldn't have been standing so close filming. It isn't safe for you, and is the type of behaviour which causes negative cougar encounters. Especially since this animal was obviously not afraid of humans, it could have turned out badly.
Excuse me, what is the life span of the cougar? Has that cougar been alive longer than what it attacked? I hate it when people say "We intruded on their territory". Their species may have been here longer, but has that particular cougar been there longer than the man it decides to attack? He's been wondering that trial a lot longer than the the cougar has. The more powerful creature always wins and conquers. We are stronger. And we should conquer. Doesn't mean we should disrespect nature tho.
Definitely, how dare it try to occupy and hunt in its natural range? That whole trail should be paved, the forest removed, and a drive-thru Starbucks built at the top. Who needs a nice view when you can buy a big-screen?
have you ever encounter a cougar or black bear in the wild? there are terrified when another animal poses a treat to them since they are usualy the top predators, listen bud i dont know you but i bet i spend a lot more time in the woods then you and i know what im talking about

I've encountered many, many bears and am not your "bud." Considering the filmers of this video were aware at the time of filming that the cat had recently attacked a dog, and go so far as to mention how unafraid of people it is, provoking it further would have been foolish. Bears are unpredictable enough as is, and cougars are even more so. They did the right thing by keeping their distance and letting it go about its business.
I heard that 3 out of 5 cougars were shot and just today a little girl was attacked on Judd road. I live in Brackendale and I walk home every day, its scary to think it could happen to anyone.
if they shot it down thats fucking stupid its there territory get used to living with animal spem ur timme putting crooks in jail not killing wild animals

your a fucking moron its a cougars instink to attack, if your up in its habitat and it attacks you or your dog its far game it sucks big time, but its not hte cougers falt, humans kill dogs and other humans all the fucking time. they dont get shot for that
Yeah I just did this hike this summer and heard people on the trail talking about this attack. I saw a few people with dogs, but larger breeds. But there was a very small dog with one group and someone told them about it, the cougar can just run off with it and snap it's neck in a second. You have to realize though, it may be paved that is still the cougars environment and we are sharing it withthem.
So if you take your animals with you, you are taking the risk of luring predators. When I go hiking I would bring a large sturdy breed meant for outdoors and in pairs, unfortunately bringing a wiener dog is like inviting cougars for lunch.
As we were coming down 4 conversation officers went up with their rifle and guns and hound dogs to handle the presence of cougar . I dont know if they shot it down .
