  • I think maybe WMG has decided to take advantage of this man being no longer with us. i get about 10secs of the video before it ends itself. it could just be my computer, but if its WMG, I am disgusted that they are doing this. This man had a lot of talent & little time. All his vids should remain up on the site.

  • @DavidM4725 I don't know what to tell you. I can watch the whole video, and I'm not watching on the same computer Zodiak made the video on. Thanks for watching, and Zodiak's channel will be up as long as I have something to say about it. ~Erica (Zodiak's wife)

  • @zodiakironfist He's no longer with us!? Are you kidding me? What happened!? Zodiak is awesome! Such an inspiration to me...I started loving Primus around the time I discovered his videos. He's played a huge part in my music loving history.

  • @zodiakironfist hello again! it seems to be working now!:)

  • there is no 'A' where you put it, do you.not hear it when you listen back on it ( without the song playing along)?

  • you throw that 'A' in american life and it screws me every time...

  • enough of this "playing along with the song" i want to hear how you sound alone. any primus nut that knows a tune can hear it then.you play very well but some of your stuff is off, it jerks me like a taser jolt...

  • youtube will miss him

  • He's still my bassgod ^-^

  • HOLY SHIT

    epic cover, man

  • thats bass is fucking nice

  • Sick on the bass

  • I just wanted to say, love the bass and love the music you put on, especially Minutemen! Keep goin' man. I suppose you don't ever use tabs right?

  • @Patnaude49 He's long gone man, but I can tell you he never used tabs. He'd been playing for a long time

  • 1:45 - Killed it!

    Sick cover.

  • thank you for this, one of my favorite primus songs, but then again i love em all. still this one is so trippy i love it. great job on it btw

  • how much did that bass cost ya?

  • Hey bro.....you smoked dat bass!

    Love it...sounds GREAT!

  • Although you use a pick (which i dont have a problem with) you tore that UP! Great job man.

  • can i ask why you used a pick ? i think using fingers could have been nice ( not criticising or anything just curious)

  • dam dude.....you fucking SUCK XD !!!!!!! (the primus meaning of suck, not the one that people think when you say primus sucks! they think you hate primus.)

  • TKO bass amp. I want to scream SNAP! Haha, nice job, still cant manage double thumb so I think it'll be pick for me too.

  • keep up the good work !

  • am i the only person who is slower with a pick than with my fingers? i'de find this so much harder using a pick

  • @cameronj279 Picks take practice as well--it's not the "I Win" button for the bass.

  • @ThePsychoMike yeah i know...especially at this sorta speed, but i prefer using my fingers anyway...a warmer tone from it plus you actually feel what your playing more. but i've tryed playing songs with a pick (that were originally played with a pick) and couldn't keep up but i'm fine with fingers lol, it's weird but i'm not complaingin :)

  • @cameronj279 It's not weird, I've played with my fingers on every instrument I've played--it's what becomes natural over time, and considering you're not born with a pick instead of fingers, it -IS- what's natural for you.

Developing the skill to keep three fingers plucking the same string in sequence is difficult though, especially for a long duration of time like Toys.

  • @ThePsychoMike yeah you have a good point....i can play around half of this song before my fretting hand gets tired but my plucking hand is usually fine, but i've got pretty small hands and 34" scale bass so its a bit of moving my hand around. i guess cause i actually started playing using all 3 of my fingers it's been a pretty good thing

  • @cameronj279 Your hands are like any other part of your body--it just takes strengthening of them to get them to do exactly what you want. Humans don't naturally have a lot of muscle in their fingers--most of the hand's muscle is actually in the arm. Working up what little muscle is there and supplementing that with arm strength takes a while, but once you get it, you've got bass hands forever.

  • Spot on man; wonderful job!

  • you suck drop the pick

  • @slccandelari troll.

  • Limited finger skills ?? I do love your modesty, its very welcoming and shows you have worked your ass off to get where you are...I have been a drummer for ever and being a musician I can say your fin'gas got skils !! :)

Keep enjoying what you do my friend :)

  • No, primus is covering U u modest man!!!!

  • RIP man

  • only pussys use picks

  • nice rick. sounds good. almost thought you were 'lip synching'

  • very nicely done

  • great vid what model bass is that\

  • Really nice job,man!

I have the same problem making it sound as tight as Les does with fingers but I can't play with picks...it's not that I hate them or anything, they just feel weird to me. I guess I'll have to keep on playing 'til I get there...well,greetings and again, really good job (Y)

  • This song gives me the creeps.

  • a pick.......

  • You make it look so easy. Bravo!

  • Im a bass player, don't use a pick ever, but it seriously don't matter man! it dont matter what car you take, as long as you get there! nice cover!

  • Sounds great fuck the pick haters bro!

  • I would like to find a nice cover of that song with a good voice... more loud than Claypool. I'm sure it would be great!!

Good work by the way, I admire your work!

  • are rickenbockers nice

  • R.I.P man your talents will be missed :(

  • @spiralisedcat what happened to this guy? =( this is sad

  • 1:45 - 1:48 gorgeous part

  • 4:24 - SPEED H4X!!!

  • such a groovy riff

  • Dude forget it man, even with a pick its awesome!!! I hope im half as good as you some day. seriously thanks for posting all these great videos!

  • I love this song. Especially the intro kicks.

  • nice pick. no 3 finger man?

  • Awsome cover!!!!

    sweet ric btw :D

  • thanks, it's a good kick in the ass.........you make me wanna play forever now

  • hello I love your way of playing. is it possible what is the effects your using? Thanks

    Jamie

  • Thanks, and no effects were used at all. Just a gain boost and some selective EQing.

  • i want that ric

  • i can finger pick with 3 fingers on the song, but i actually can't play it like that with a pick at all! good job!

  • I got the same Peavy Coombo Amp as U. I like it verry much. Nice playing by the way.

  • les would be proud

  • That is crazy awesome.

  • Fuck pick haters. I'm multi-versed. I use fingers, pick, or slap. It all depends on tone. A pick has a nice, crisp aggressive tone, where fingers is nice for a deep mellow sound. Slap is good just for being aggressive or funky.

  • You're right.

But... See, I play also classical guitar. When you do some tremolos on classic, you learn that you need a piece of nails. Using them, you can get the "pick tone". In this way of thinking, we can say that pick really can limit a bassist.

  • @isher1992 I agree, if you limit yourself to just one playing style. you limit your creativity. its all about personal preference and preferred tone.

  • Is that a Schecter Stargazer or a Rickenbacker 4001?

  • that's a rickenbacker 4001

  • i think a rickenbacker because of the headstock shape

  • very awesome! I subbed! :)

  • PRIMUS SUCKS

  • Some nice bass plyin there son!!!

  • Comment removed

  • great job with those "tight little triplets" with the pick, (assuming you cant last past the 1st verse cause you use two fingers and get tired) have you tried with 3 or 4 fingers?

  • whats LRRG?

  • living room rock god

  • Living Room Rock God

  • love this song!

  • Much respect being able to play this song man. Personally I would die playing with a pick for that long, I would rather spend 5 years mastering a song with my fingers than 1 doing it with a pick.

  • obviusly a bassist i can relate to then

  • there's no way that any instrument "should" be played.. if i want to play guitar by hitting with a drumstick then that's my choice, and odds are it might sound cool. there is no way that bass "should" be played. so stop whining, all of you

  • hey come on, don't be haters now. of course he's not Les Claypool. NO one is. But he is really good. pfft haterrrrrs. good job man =) I'm a HUGE Primus fan, been since I was 11 when Pork Soda came out.

  • ... you suck

  • which form of sucks are we talking about?

in primus terms, or other terms?

  • i personaily am talking primus but apparently people are fucking retarded and dont get it.

  • primus style so fuck you guys.

  • PICK SUKS but you are good player

  • i didnt hear about brain until after tales from the punch bowl, this was before that.i miss tim with them by the way.

  • im sorry.i disagree, tim alexander is much better than brain.really listen to him on frizzle fry, absolutely genius.

  • Tim is more of a Neal Peart style drummer, tighter than hell. Brain is more eclectic and loose, but both of them are masters of their respective styles.

I personally like Brain's playing better, but that is because I think it is more creative. Tim is the better technical drummer, though.

  • You are basicly shiting on less claypool by playing this with a pick. If you can play it the way he plays it. Then dont ack like its some big deal, when you handycap it, with a pick.

  • Well, you just earned yourself a ban from my channel. Sorry, but I am now banning all pick-haters because you won't shut up with your incessant whining. And you're a special one because you apparently appointed yourself official spokesmen for Les Claypool.

    Here's a clue...Les probably doesn't give a shit how I play a song. Only whiner fan-boys obsess over crap like that...like you.

I can play it with my fingers, but I can play it PERFECTLY with a pick. Which would you choose?

  • Five minutes of nothing but triplets with only a short break is no easy task, especially when the song comes from Les Claypool. Fuck pick haters: it still sounds pretty great. Keep posting these videos.

  • Try to play it the way less does, triplets with his fingers not a pick. Anyone could do it with a pick. This is cheating!

  • There is no cheating in bass...you either make the sound or you don't. How you do it is irrelevent to anyone but obsessive fan-boys.

  • Oh yeah, and if you love Les so much that you would defend him from the awful guy who plays with a pick, you should probably spell his name correctly.

  • @zodiakironfist hahaha nice one

and i love your videos your awesome

  • You probably can't, you fucking loser.

  • @LICK5d -i would love to see you a primus tune at all this guy is amazing

  • @LICK5d Lol, using that logic, anyone could play it with their fingers. Because I'm pretty sure 95% of people watching this video couldn't play this song with a pick

  • @LICK5d let me know when your vid gets uploaded so we can see you play it better

  • I don't care how sexy that Rickenbacker 4003 (or is it 4001?) is, bass guitars should not be played with picks. That bothers me so damn much.

  • For your information, the Rickenbacker was built with a pick in mind, and not only that but clearly about half of the bass players out there use picks, including some of the great ones. If you have a horrible pick prejudice, then you should not watch my videos because I reserve the right to play exactly how I want, when I want.

I ban pick haters because frankly I am tired of hearing their whining. I sure would hate for you to have to join them.

  • I bet half of the bassists you know that play Rickenbackers use picks frequently or have at some point.

    To name a few:

Roger Waters (Frequently when he played Ricks in Barret-era Pink Floyd)

Paul McCartney (Once or twice I've heard him use one)

    Paul D'Amor (Always a pick.)

Justin Chancellor (When Peach toured with Tool, Justin played Sober on Paul's Rick with a pick)

  • i know it's a little late but you forgot lemmy :P

  • That was awesome but don't Les Clapool use a 6 String bass for this song.

  • When i saw you at the begining of the video i thought to myself "what am i about to watch?" but you totally blew me away. Great Job!

  • for sure no claypool, for sure no dufus ^^ smt in between but vgood!!!

  • you are fucking amazing....you should try thunderhorse by dethklok next

  • you gave a great try and thats what really counts

and besides at least you know who primus is haha

  • After watching this again,,why would you even attempt using a pick. Regardless, very few people could pull this off as well as this..

  • I think I described why in my video description. It has to do with consistency, endurance, and precision. All of which I have more of with a pick.

  • I have never seen anyone attempt this with a pick,,,Nice

  • With completely different styles, too. That's what I loved about Brain as a choice....he introduced all kinds of new approaches to beats, and actually, he is harder for me to synch up with. His timing is impeccable, and weird.

  • that is NOT Brian, its Tim.

  • im liking the digitec pedal in the background :)

  • your amazing. i envy your skills :)

  • awesome vid. I really like this song but ican't find it anywhere

  • Its on the album Frizzle Fry

  • but where can i find the album

  • I know this is blasphemy, but I think that bass line would be great in a rap song.

    Disclaimer - I don't even like rap.

  • the way that i've seen les do it is using three fingers instead of two. if you havn't tried that it may help.

  • decki to vam se pere bez grca s 3 prsta

  • from everything i've seen from les on this song he plays triplets using three fingers, pretty interesting.

  • just curious, but does les use a pick on that part?

  • Nope. I've never seen Les use a pick.

  • lol, if your a dufus, god knows what that makes me...scary thought.

Like, I'm hopeless enough as it is

  • Do you have any idea what kind of effects he uses? It sounds like some kind of delay with reverb joined with something for a string bass sound. I'm just not sure what. There might also be a chorus in there...

  • no effects, just his normal bass sound and a three finger triplet w his right hand, at least thats what he said in a bass player mag I have from '92

  • I know nothing in the main line - but it at least sounds like something is in the slow section starting at 3:09.

  • That is an acoustic upright played with a bow, no need for effects to get that sweet sound

  • great job but yeah just practice with your fingers

  • He plays the triplet notes on his right hand. its a tough concept to learn, but you're playing speed dramatically increases

  • This is so much harder to play with a pick.

  • man....... two words: you rock!

  • you have great tone

  • I've seen the hallucinogenics show and I saw les playing with his three fingers. Seems like it would be harder with a pick?

  • Im pretty sure les plays this with 3 fingers in kind of his own galloping technique,

  • its true its actually super easy its not tough at all just gotta spend a little bit practicing it

  • Even I can do it. I suck.

  • may i ask how much you got that rick for?

  • Really? Wow...that is new info to me, but then again, I really never watch Les play....I just listen and try to replicate the sound.

  • i can play it the whole way through... idk youre probably right about the delay thing though

it wouldnt surprise me if les DID have the skill to do that but i havent seen the video so ill take ur word.

    he still kicks ass :D

  • Les doesn't use a delay pedal, he does play triplets. It's not really that hard to play, it's a pretty simple technique. It's harder to explain how to do it. When I get a camera I'll post a video...

  • thankyou you took the words right outa my mouth

  • those arent tripplets.

  • Ummm...yes, they are.

  • no they're 16th's

    three 16th and a 16th rest.

  • Yup...three notes together.....that's a triplet in my book. If there is some fancy definition that theorists use, then we aren't speaking the same language.

  • yeah im using thory terms,

    a triplet is diving each measure into 4 sets of 3 so its: 1 + ah 2 + ah 3 + ah 4 + ah

    those are triplets.

now this is using 16ht notes:

    1 e + ah 2 e + ah 3 e + ah 4 e + ah

and in this song you play the "1 e +" and rest for the "ah"

great cover, and bass by the way.

  • does the term gallop sound better to you then? Either way he does a great job :)

  • yes it is a gallop, and im not saying the cover isnt bad its alot better than i can do. bu sry im a music geek and hat it when people usre the wrong terms.

  • Doesn't bother me...I knew we were speaking different languages when you started talking note lengths and rests.

I do not come from a theory world, but simply a "bass-playing in his living room" world (and a rather layman one at that). In that world, if you play three notes in rapid succession like a drum flam, then that is a triplet.

  • not many people are music theory experts. but thats okay. im happy with my music knowledge so ill just keep it at that.

  • I dunno. I can manage it with three fingers.

  • nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  • those triplets are tough to play with fingers

  • nicely done man. Is the intro to the song a song of its own, or is it just the intro to Toys go winding down?

  • ....im fuckin speechless. Your a god among men. We should all be licking your shoes.

  • LOL. I am a dork playing bass in his living room!

    But thank you nonetheless.

  • Amazing!!!

How do you record all your bass cover?

  • My channel description has my equipment listed.

  • zodiakironfist, did you say you are having trouble playing this song with your fingers?

  • I did. It's tough for me to play this tune all of the way through and get it as tight as I like it. My attack is strong because of the age of my bass' pickups, and it just wears my fingers to the bone with either two or three finger technique.

I am not a natural finger player, having played just with a pick for my first 5 years. If you compare my skill with one technique against the other, it is clear that there is a skill gap between them.

My slap and tap are not affected by this, though.

  • ok..the reason i ask is because there is some tools you can buy to train your fingers...do you know about them?

  • dude your timing is too good!... i know when your moving fast doing double notes your timing has to be dead on or you wont get that wobble effect.. like when your transferring from chords to single notes it looks almost impossible lol but you dod it perfect... NICE!

  • hmm

i stole this from another video

but maybe they wont take down the rest of your vids if you put this in the description

  • A nice thought, but no....youtube uses automated recognition software to find the audio signature in the video.

  • thats too bad

    :(

id hate to see all your primus covers get taken off

    well

at least youll still have some iron maiden and rage

  • amidst ever other great band you do covers of
