Typical humans someone travels a billion light yrs. and we welcome them with guns and tanks. If you can travel the universe gun powder isn't going to threaten you. Hope we don't act like this when "they" eventually contact us lets say Hi guys welcome to Earth.
Simply one of the greatest science fictions movies of all time. When Gort walks down the ramp, and closes up the ship behind it, you know some serious ass-whupping is about to happen. The music of Bernard Herrmann is absolutely essential to the power and chills of this movie. Masterpiece!
Gort should have melted into and out-of the structure of the ship's bulkhead in the remake just like the T-1000 in Terminator 2. That would have been an inventive and welcome entrance in the remake. But Keeanu Reeves as Klaatu? Well I knew these aliens were advanced but I didn't know that they were also little metro-sexual gay-boys. Suddenly...I'm just not so afraid anymore...
There is no Remake. You need *actors* for a movie. Keanu Reeves ≠ actor. His mimic variety is limited to one (dense) face. You could replace him with a scarecrow without anyone noticing. A wax figure has got more expressiveness than Reeves. Period.

Though I do wonder what fool decided to deploy field artillery for a target a hundred feet away. Also, the crew compliment of a Sherman tank was five. Looks like a couple of guys didn't make it.
The remake was a fucking fail , there is no way to remake the original . It was and is the best , no matter if it is made in the fifties, this was science fiction at it's best ..... Fuck cgi movies , get real ship mockups and costumes like it is supposed to look like . Reboots are for suckers ...
This is a classic. Made in 1951, the special effects are pretty good. the script is great with a wonderful message and the music is right on. True horror is not necessarily in the visual, it's in the words. Michael Rennie was perfect for this part. For some reason, a person with an English accent has more credibility. Just a great movie, rated one of the best science fiction movies of all time.
@maureenOWW Just in case you thought me deranged, I just want to point out that GORT is primarily a sex-bot. It stands for Guaranteed Orgasm Robotic Technology. The whole laser-beam thing is part of his S&M program.
my kids grew up in the CGI era. they sort of shrug at ths scene. but for me, this was--and still is---chilling. a creature entirely devoid of fuzzy human warmth. stern and souless
@wrybreadspread Thank you! I think this scene is both chilling and powerful and the music has a *lot* to do with it. You forget that it's rubber suit because you get pulled right in and almost become a part of the scene.
@thafoofa one can only imagine the impact this scene had on viewers back in its first theatrical release. I was a kid back in the 1960's when i first saw it; years before Star Wars or even Star Trek TOS. The scene later in the movie where Gort melts the barrier he was sealed in and almost disintegrates the heroine ("klatu barada nikto") had me totally wired when i first saw it. it remained my sci fi fave for many years. I still think Michael Rennie is a superior Klatu to Keanau Reeves
@wrybreadspread "I still think Michael Rennie is a superior Klatu to Keanau Reeves" Absolutely. The re-make pales in comparison to the original in every way. Yes, the scene with Gort and Helen had me on edge too.
oh this is way more cooler than the remake....even though the sfx looks kinda dated in some parts this must have been such a wow factor back in its heyday......!

Remake is UN-watchable. They should be ashamed of themselves for making such an insulting remake of this magnificent sci-fi masterpiece. Did you see the precision of Gort's rays as they individually targetted first the small-arms and then the main battle tanks? They didn't use computers, although you'd think they did....and their work still holds up today. Gort sized up the situation and took appropriate counter-action without using deadly force. @JetMechMA AMEN!!! The re-make is krap. I watched this as a kid on "Family Classics", & other shows in Chicago. Of course, now I own a copy. Excellent sci-fi. 1950's tech still works! "The War Of The Worlds" re-make is pretty good. Darn close to the book & the original flick.
@YaesuFT736R War of the Worlds is well made...but I found it a little violent. No, I found it very violent. I think a child could be traumatized by the new version.
@duckgeezer Americans recall the lesson taught the Romans by Brennus the Gauls in 387 bce when he threw his sword onto the scales proclaiming "Vae Victis": Woe to the Vanquished. There is no substitute for victory. We Yanks would rather spend Trillion$ for defense than give one penny in tribute. It is better to rule over a pile of rubble and rotting corpses than be subservient in a splendid palace of a conquerer and better to die on one's feet fighting for freedom than to live on one's knees.
@duckgeezer You're assuming humans have intrinsic value. But you're mistaken. All value is subjective including human life. Those who oppose US values or pose a threat to Americans (or me) have a negative value. Hence, it is morally good to destroy them. It is unknown what Marcus Furius Camillus uttered upon the battlefield after defeating Brennus' forces, but it would have been amusing if he had "VAE VICTIS" written upon Brennus' crucifix. Might makes Right because I am the standard of value.
@duckgeezer Gosh Duck: looks like a personal problem to me; if you dislike us Yanks so much, you're welcome to come do something about it. Do recall though that Marcus Furius Camillus put the hurting on Brennus and his buddies and that we Americans have lots of guns, so "VAE VICTIS" will not be said of us. BTW, shame on you for having sympathy for communist pieces of shit. Only capitalists and individualists have value as human beings. Collectivists are immoral and should be destroyed.
@Megido They would have all been killed if they did fire back. If aliens came to our planet that could do what these did. We would find that we are not as tough as we think. Since they could stop electricity. Sure Klaatu could do far more.
@jrwel14 But they didn't know that, whether or not it is true. The moment Gort showed such signs of hostility the real military would return fire. Since they didn't in the movie we can't say for sure that Gort wouldn't have been been able to kill them all before being destroyed. Klaatu himself was shot, and killed, so the military may have stood a chance against them.
Now would they have stood a chance against the rest of Klaatu's people? No, not even a ghost of one.
I remain to be convinced that the earth has been visited by extra-terrestrials. But I don't rule out the possibility. BUT, if they have done so, then maybe the reason they are so reluctant to show themselves is because they do not trust humankind. I can see their point!
If you want to read the short story, it's called "Farewell to the Master," by Harry Bates. The movie is meant to bolster one world government, where all nuclear weapons are turned over to the United Nations, who would then keep the peace (something Eisenhower advocated). The religious parallels are thick. Klaatu takes the name "Carpenter," is killed and then resurrected by the robot. In short, it was a propaganda film. But a good one.
yes, th remake was poor, even having Neo didn't help. cheap CG fx, an they didn't even focus on th point, which is humanities primitivism, ecological damage merely being part of that. even th classic speech at th end to th nations was gone. too bad.
