Bloody amazing track. Epic. A bit young to have been into ELP myself, but had the 'Fanfare...' single when I was a kid and this was the B side. Amazing. Used to drive my mum crazy with it
back in the day, had a free floppy plastic record of this track given away with the new musical express , with exerpts from the album to promote it. we made it for our NME. don.'t think it was intended for release commercially at the time.
It's great to hear this after what seems a lifetime ago for me. And good to see a few folks know this as a track that was recorded on a flexi-disc and was given away free with "New Musical Express" to promote the release of the Brain Salad Surgery album. I've never forgotten the copy I played to death on my mono record player in my bedroom as a 14 year old kid.
i found the flexi disc, mentioned, in a dustbin when i was 14.(raking in the bins was a favourite hobby for the poor) and this track opened my ears up to a whole new world of music and must have played a million times over and over again.
The flexidisc had a superior mix. The Works Vol. 2 version rolled off the bass, unfortunately. The flexidisc version would literally shake my floor, back in the day.
Amazing track! I remember my father always insisted for me to search it on the internet many years ago, and I hated it everytime I was forced to listen to it, because it is very strange and I could not understand it! XD
@BrainStillLife i think thta, they recorded this, when the pacage and almots all the album was finished, but i don't know, the booklet has more details,i will have to check it out
@BrainStillLife Or Still, you turn me on...what? It sucks too, I think they should've made the album entirely from impressions of the Karn Evil 9 + Toccata and this track
@GoblinGirl it was given away free as a promo on the cover of a music paper (not certain which one NME ?) the week before the album released it was pretty LoFi on a floppy vinyl 7" I had a copy I kept in the back of the gatefold. the disc had some extracts from the album included
I have the original floppy plastic disc of this track that was given away in NME when the album was released... and it STILL plays!

Greg Lake is my Hero! I would let him babysit my kids, and then teach them awesome music.

This song sounds much more like The Nice than ELP.

Every aspiring drummer should hear this song.
This song makes a real difference in your way of drumming; in your way of life. (Adaptation of a quote from "Miracle Ear" commercial.)

@aquakarn
as i already posted, this was the B side to Fanfare for the common man in UK, and I blew a few sets of speakers listening to this!
Gatdecor 1 year ago
@Gatdecor Yes...I have that, and I also have the NME Flexidisc. What I was trying to point out was: this ain't it! :-)
aquakarn 1 year ago
Benny the bouncer was awesome!
The bass on this track though is enough to blow your woofers!
B side of Fanfare for the common man btw..

Or they could have made Brain Salad Surgery a double album. A lot of the leftover tracks on Works Vol. 2 were from those sessions.
GoblinGirl 1 year ago
Great track, never understood why they didn't put it on the actual album that bore its name.
GoblinGirl 1 year ago 10
@GoblinGirl I agree, they should have replaced Benny the Bouncer or Jerusalem with this track.
BrainStillLife 1 year ago
@BrainStillLife I would have replaced Benny the Bouncer with this one. I like Jerusalem.
GoblinGirl 1 year ago 4
@BrainStillLife Or they could've just added it in. It wouldn't make the sides length go over 20.
