It's easy to see by the discoloration of the wheels themselves that they don't penetrate the soil very deeply. Couple that with the fact that they are quite skinny and thus would sink very easily on soft ground, I'm going with the rice theory.

why would you be going through the lake? and yeh sure it would piss through the deep mud, thats what there half designed for, the idea is that they sick through the soft non grippy mud and get to the ''sub soil'' as such and there for find harder more grippy stuff.

I used to live in the Mississippi delta. There, they used these types of wheels on tractors that had to go in and out of the catfish ponds on catfish farms. In those cases, they were less likely to kill the fish or disturb the sediments too much.
