@PaulM678347 the direction and most of the actors in the '73 version are far superior (Robert Ryan is unbelievable as Larry, Fredric March as Harry, Jeff Bridges as Parritt, & a stunning Moses Gunn as Joe), you can rent it through Netflix (the full 4 hr version w/bonus disc w/extra material)...the only comparison is between Robards and Lee Marvin's Hickey, I actually think Marvin is better though many swear by Robards. John Frankenheimer directed and it is a true FILM, not merely a filmed play
I saw this original Broadway production when I was about fifteen years old, around 1946. I remember sitting in the mezzanan, and not understanding one word of what they said.
I went because I wanted to see my cousin who played the part of Rocky Pioggi, the bartender in the play.. Strange, but now, about 60 years later, I finally understand the play!..
Amazing acting. How can this not yet be acknowledged by everybody as what it is?
Genius play.

Has anyone seen the 1973 film version? I hear it is very good and would love to try to find it.
