  • fantastic professor !!!!

  • One time a had a friend staying with me for a few months and my nice expensive metal ice cream scoops came up missing. I asked him, "have you seen my good ice cream scoops" very casually. He immediately, with no prompt said "ya, I sold them for crack haha... no, I haven't seen them, I thought you put them away." It wasa lil weird, because I kind of suspected he sold them or used them for heroin (they were metal). Later I found out he DID sell them for heroin... Meuller's only ur Earth name..

  • Dr. Mueller has the marks of being a true educator. Not very many people who have PhD's are gifted with this talent. What a remarkable instructor! Thank you, University of Berkeley!

  • That a physics professor have to teach about Stalin speaks volumes about the lack of knowledge of the American youth. What a pity!

  • Oh - I see - shouldn't blame the professor, but rather the American MTV generation, I suppose.

  • Yawn! And students PAY for this? These stories could be told at a public library. No doubt the professor is a great storyteller - but he's wasting the students time here.

  • students will learn better through this kind of teacher. Prof. RAM is great!

  • Thankyou!

  • Just thank you very much Mr.Muller

  • watching this you tube video i realised how bad my teachers are ...i wish i had such a great teacher as Professor Richard, he makes things sound so intresting captivating all the students with the real life storyes he witnessed as a great physics professor! Thank you for these great videos, Ill watch all of them!

  • I just took AP Physics, this is an equivalent (if not slightly lesser) intellectual experience.

  • @Rileyman2rr I retract that statement. now that i have finished the video

  • Annie Jacobsen, the writer of the book "Area 51" wrote that the Russians hired Josef Mengele, the infamous NAZI Auschwitz concentration camp Frankenstein human experimenter, to genetically engineer mutant children who then flew a Russian Spy plane over Roswell New Mexico that then crashed. Who should we believe?

  • I hate a twisted slinky :'(

  • While this lecture may be quite informative, it has taken an hour to pussy foot around (give a wide berth to) two or three applicable facts (due to classification). Rule No. 1; It's cheaper to give it away. No locks, no glass box, no damn dam. Let the escapee (fragment of truth) run. Step aside, let it go or run with it; Free up.

  • Is he alive or dead now?

  • Thank you Prof. Muller. Your energy is infectious.

  • Thank you Prof. Muller. Your energy is infectious.

  • The mind boggles if you watch this whilst high.

  • This guy is the best teacher! that sums up all i have to say.

  • why 9 dislikes???

  • at the end he talks about hearing distant noise in morning and evening, anyone know just how distant he means?

  • this is interesting and all, but im looking for some videos to explain the math side of this. my physics class is extremely heavy on the math side and this isnt going to help me with my physics homework at all.

  • @afebass2 ask me, (i think) i can help, my teacher sums up the math to where is (almost) perfectly understood.

  • Excellent teacher .... thank you Berkley . In my understanding velocity and speed are not the same thing . Does either one change for a micro wave traveling in a vacuum ? As opposed to traveling through an atmosphere of a gaseous nature . Is frequency increased or decreased when passing from vacuum to atmosphere

?? Thank you in advance for a reply .

  • I wish all profs were that interesting as this one, awesome record

shame on you all rich boys and girls falling asleep!

  • @johnfox1johnfox1 uc berkeley is not for rich.It is a public university for 9000/year tuition for residents:)

  • @milpitas1985 Well, some of us went to schools that cost less than half that per year, and it still seemed pretty pricey at the time. Mileage varies.

  • I ALMOST FALL A SLEEP

  • we usually sleep at classes... or we get crosswords... its THAT boring here...

  • He says that the particles or rather that everything is a wave, but how can he be so sure about this, when most phycisists would never make this claim, it is rather naive, as the wave model is what it is, just a model! I'd say that a photon is not just a wave, it is a photon and behaves according to the wave and particle models depending on what the situation is!

  • campusdealsucb.tumblr

  • Thank your for the lecture on waves, very helpful and fun.

  • Who needs Tuition Fees ....free education is here at last!

    :)

Check out DoctorDave on youtube too...excellent physics lectures are popping up everywhere.

  • I wish i could go to a school like this.

  • Great! Lot of cool information.

  • The comments for these physics lecture videos give me a headache, why is the subject of physics such a magnet for quacks? I wish they would just disable comments for the videos...

  • @wasabitakoyaki They want to belong in this small clique and feel better about themselves for it. When someone goes and shows that everyone can actually understand this, they just feel threatened and attack the guy. If they really were concerned about Muller oversimplifying things, they would guide people to better sources of information, instead of being hostile.

  • this is fantastic, a good teacher makes the subject interesting, and he's the best at that!

at about 26:00 he said surface earthquakes spread out in only 1 dimension but he meant to say 2, I'm sure

  • Dude, make up your mind what do you want to takl about! Then write it down and plan. This lecture is a total mess! It's about everything simultaniously. Nothing is said good and everything is incomplete.

  • Any idiot can get a degree in astronomy. You really think your little undergrad "research" studies are enough to refute every modern principle in cosmology, astronomy, and physics? Then publish your "findings" in a peer-reviewed scientific journal and win the Nobel Prize. otherwise, shut the fuck up. dipshit.

  • Great class with a fantastic professor. Thank you Berkeley!

  • ooh hes referencin string theory when hes talking about everthign is made of waves

  • take a friend! Ha, I love this guy

  • he was wrong about the clouds going up to the ozone layer... it depends, it may go up to the stratosphere depending on the temperature, it is generally way before the ozone layer.

  • we need this lecturer in glasgow university. he is really good.

  • The 1947 Flying saucer was Extraterrestrial not Human. Alien Beings were found and photographed. Objects were found with Unknown Writings and Hieroglyphics. We got most of the technology from this incident. This guys thinks he is smart, but hes no. Hes not smarter than you or anyone else. Just because the government tells you something, doesn't mean they are telling the truth. They lied once, why won't they lie twice.

The government is in contact with Extraterrestrials. do your research.

  • it is physically impossible for aliens to have come to earth because the nearest star system is proxima centauri which is 4 light years away. think about it, it takes light 4 years to get here. it is impossible to accelerate anything of mass to anywhere near the speed of light. it would take thousands of years for aliens to reach us. once you get outside the gravitational field of the sun, no more acceleration is possible. (space craft are accelerated via gravitational sling.) i.e. you are dumb

  • you are being facetious and "stupid"

and everyone has known that light can slow down for hundreds of years. refractive index = speed of light in new medium divided by speed of light in old medium, that equation implies that speed of light is not c in both mediums.

c is an upper limit and IS A CONSTANT.

also photon momentum does not necesserily imply mass since it comes from the de broglie equation which has no mass term in it, only wavlenght and momentum and planck's constant.

  • I'm not arguing that aliens have come to Earth, but why do you think that it is impossible that they haven't? Your argument about >c travel is correct, but relativistic effects of travelling NEAR the speed of light mean that the time-frames are severely shortened from 'thousands of years', re: the twin paradox.

  • time frames are only shortened for the observer, lengths are shortened for the one who is moving because according to him, he is still and everyone else is moving. but that is besides the point. relativety also shows that anything that has a mass which is measurable requires astronomical amounts of energy to be accelerated to speeds which are even 0.1 times c, where relativistic effects are still extremely small. where does this energy come from? the only way i can imagine is nuclear engines

  • Only based upon currently known laws....you assume that we know everything about the nature of light, motion and well the physical universe.....this is something I highly doubt. There are just too many holes in the theories. Before anyone asks I will not list them, I simply do not have the time to look them up again. Besides Physics as we know the science is less than a century old. There is likely much that we have not yet seen let alone studied.

  • lol at you seems like you don't know so much about physics go check out worm holes or interruptions of the net space-time then you will know that it is possible to be in another part of the universe in couple of minutes

  • again actually think before you speak. although under general relativity it is possible for two regions of spacetime to be linked via a wormhole, the only proposed mechanism for the creation of such an entity would be to have the friedmann universe 1, the closed and collapsing under gravity variety, and for there to be two black holes positioned directly above each other so that they connected. anyway you couldnt travel through such a thing, you could never leave once inside the event horizon.

  • not to mention you would be crushed into infinte density.

just like you were by my argument....

  • @Mobyman, see your problem is that you expect these people to base their assumptions on things like "logic" and "facts." How narrow minded of you.

*insert ALL CAPS accusations of liberal elitism here*

  • one must have dreams, but one must not let them pervade ones notion of reality.

can people please go away and read some books and then THINK about these things before giving an offhand comment attempting to refute years and years of the greatest minds' work.

    apparently not.

I salute your sarcasm, the lowest form of wit, but the highest form of humour

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA

  • shut your mouth you stupid hippie

  • I loved these lectures so much I bought the book and loved it too. Muller is simply a pleasure to watch.

  • Can someone tell me why he refers to a Sphere as being 2 dimensions and the surface of the Earth as being 1 dimension? Doesn't make any sense to me.

  • He doesn't say that the surface is 1 dimension, he says that the earthquakes on the surface as 1d coz they only travel one way, I guess

  • The reason is that the SURFACE of the sphere is 2-D, and the LENGTH of a circle is 1-D. A sphere is 3-D, sure, but the sound is on the surface of the sphere.

  • Actually, I think there are or can be valid applications, corollaries between physics and politics. Groups of people in a political organization can be thought of as having mass, direction, and momentum.

    I love physics.

  • lol

  • this is hilarious

  • I think it's past your bedtime, son.

  • Playing skip rope pretty much fulfills the physics requirements for Berkley in that it gives you a "conceptual understanding of physics" without any math.

  • This set of lectures are not specifically aimed at physics majors, who do obviously delve into the mathematical analysis its just a module aimed at people studying other subjects who would benefit from a conceptual understanding of physics people who do not need to be bombarded with figures and equations to learn, personally i enjoy both but these lectures are cool, there just food for thought more than anything els!

  • the fact that they are free outweighs your argument, please stop shunning free education

  • does anyone know how to get the two buttons next to the title on other vids

  • man i hope my teachers are like this when i go to university!

  • I just watched this lecture on google video... what a charismatic speaker, I was entertained & enthused.

  • Good teacher ! Isn't he Very understandable.

  • Thanks for posting, Very interesting ! They should post lectures in the Netherlands to, for interested people and students it's a good help ( the best help ) In the evening when you're relaxed, I just pop on a lecture. And when you don't understand everything the first time, you can look at it again. fantastic !

  • I suspect that life itself is some form of very high electro --- quantum frequency wave that when involved with a complex compatible biosphere, The DNA respond and the subject becomes self animated and therefore is alive! So I appreciate Prof Muller lecture to learn about waves and maybe see confirmation of my theory.

  • What does quantum frequency mean?

  • Richard Muller is totally awesome he responded very quickly to my email. He is still doing this class too.

    Five stars!

Check my light is a wave video ! (:

  • He responded to mine fast

I would like to meet him he seems very kind epsecialy in the science cafe thing+ his intervew

    Good on you!!!!!!

  • wht is the E-mail address of MR. Richard Muller ?

  • Hey, at least we aren't paying thousands of dollars to hear this.

  • somehow the lector like too much to talk about no-his subject. like politics governments, lies spies ets..

  • It's to make connections in the brain. The brain has an easier time remembering things if it can connect the information to something it already knows.

  • This is such a great and a very informative lecture! A++++

  • these lectures are amazing! they really make it much easier and faster to learn physics, or any other course material. i've sat through 12hrs of lectures in 3 days and learned more than i've learned in 3 months of an irl course :s.

  • i really like those videos, That man is really good in explaining stuff. i wish i had a teacher like that!

  • Lectures are not tailored to individuals. I find that if you have the patience to listen to explanations you will get the most from them, It's then up to you to remember whatever you feel is most interesting or mysterious.

  • i h8 waves

  • with out waves you would not hear things , or sounds wouldn't make sense.. and a lot more.

  • He shoud allways speak in that high voice!

  • he got the area of a sphere wrong, is it not 4/3(pi)r^2

  • Sphere surface area = 4πr^2 = πd^2

  • pretty sure thats the volume

  • Nope.

    Area 4πr²

    Volume 4/3(π)r³

  • thanks i was ad libing i just remember vaguely that the fraction 4/3 belonged to the volume, should of recognised the power never described 3 dimensions, also anyone reads popular science books should try " scrodingers kittens the search for reality " john gribben

  • That Saucer was designed by Viktor Schauberger and was really a craft. This guy is a great conceptual teacher but is grosely misled

Those who are misled are not educated they are misled!

  • i can hardly see how this physics applies to mopping restrooms... harnessing the energy in tides to power cities, curing cancer, engineering bridges, designing recording studios (among MANY other things) on the other hand.. all wave related... please do humanity a favor and shoot urself in that closed mind.

  • Anyone know the physics behind a mexican wave?...stupid physics jokes. Hey why is 6 scared of 7...cus 7 8 9. Muhahaha!

  • I can't believe they learn that kind of basic stuff in university! we learnt all that last year in high school lol.

  • I think they are just going over the basics...if it was the first year of university that generally happends. But this is only a couple of lectures. They would proabbaly do a lot more though out the year.

  • Maybe you should teach the class then...mastering the basics is important. You might find that looking at something in a new light make you understand it more. Give the school credit for knowing what it's up to, I was young and impatient once too. Now I don't mind listening to all of this, I find something interesting to pick everyonce in a while.

  • how can they make videos last 70 mins! and upload to youtube???

  • Probably because the user is a "director", a special feature which lets you upload bigger files. I don't know exactly how it works though.

  • Here in Guatemala we often experience tremors and mild quakes. I have noticed that our dog always freeks out a few seconds before we can sense the quake. I am guessing that she can hear a P wave as it comes through. Why P wave? Premero/Spanish, or Premiere/French, and Premier/English. It al means first. Thanks to Berkeley & Richard for posting these great lectures on the tube.

    Chuck

  • If you want specific skill for a job, go to a vocational training school. A university education (in this case for humanity major) is meant to make you a well rounded person. I was a physics major at Cal and they made us take quite a few humanity classes, and I enjoyed them.

  • hacking

  • Roswell incident was a fake was intended for the United States Military to scar the Soviets of Soviet Russia.

  • r u going to comment that on all the lessons?

  • If you are interviewing for janitor, yes.

  • haha true.

  • 1)the strength of the wave at any one measured point will decrease as the radius of the wave increases. Semantics, i think we all recognize the law of conservation of energy.

    2)go to lecture 17

  • things arent MADE of waves. waves travel THROUGH things. the fact that all matter has wave properties in no way says anything about friction. friction is just an estimate of the normal forces acting between the jagged edges of objects.

  • So far as we know, sound is a wave. Yet it need not travel through anything.

  • You are wrong. Sound waves will not propagate in a vacuum. They must travel through something.

  • Yea, I messed up my words there. Meant to write one thing but did the other. I know fully well sound doesn't propagate in a vacuum.

I have noted my mistake in another reply.

  • ***** Oops I MEANT to say 'light' is a wave. I was thinking to much about sound prior to writing that and didn't notice I ended up using the wrong word.

  • thats the thing tho... light isn't simply a wave. it does have common properties to waves for instance we can observe interference between multiple light sources, but it also has properties associated with particles... which is why the rules of geometry also apply to light.. pretty intense this thing we call light

  • rubbish camera directing, if your gonna do a job do it properly or let someone else do it!

    D+

  • you have the balls to complain about free education? I wish more universities would tape their lectures... I would watch this kind of stuff every day.

  • I see all the class, and really I enjoyed, and i learn about the SOFAR and the sound channel, really incredible things.

This is a nice project. I think Marshall McLuhan have reason in that tha he told "the global village". The students of all world have the opportunity to have a good class of waves.

    Thx.

  • Totally agree SirFreakman.

    This is a class!!

I love my university but we need more of that kind of classes. The classes here are very... (hmmm, how I can express it?) rough? flat?

We need a bit of madness, interactivity. The science is soft if you have passion and this man has it.

Art is the way to transfer your feelings to others. This man has a bit of artist, transferring love for the science.

  • @drcaos totally... I have just come out of my 3rd medical phisics class so disheartened, again, cos I didnt understand anything. And now I see this Im jealous. Im at supposedly the best uni in Spain and its BOLOX This guy makes sense, I understand him the sound quality is good, the board can be seen clearly, the room is well lit and it is interesting. (all of these things, my classes have lacked. Im gonna email this link to out prof to see if he gets the hint :(
