Great song, and this is the first time I've heard it. Unfortunately it is the first time; but the first time of so many, for sure. RIP Ben Orr. Love, from Portugal
Jingleburp, agree that later Cars became robotic and souless as RIc was allowed to dictate more of the production and dominate the songwriting. they lost the 'rock' and the emotionalism of the first 2 albums and personally it wasn't my taste. what i love about ben orr's solo work is that he brings the emotion back, and his vocals are refreshingly devoid of the mannerisms and affectations that he sometimes felt compelled to use when with The Cars.
@zemkam1951 The milkwood picture is just a random one somebody used . Hopefully this will be released on CD one day , it was recorded sometime in the mid 90s .
How amazing that as Ben got older his voice matured in an amazing and beautiful range. In this song we hear the tonality of sadness and emotion in his deep voice. This song makes me wish he was here still singing and often wonder what he would sound like if he was still alive. Peace be with you Ben.
WOW! I have to hear a dose of this EVERYday now! Thanks and SPECIAL Thanks to BEN for soothing my SOUL! The lyrics are what I needed to hear! He will not be forgotten. I cant get enough of this song and I CRAVE it!
Virtually every song on every album after Panorama became mechanical, precise, contrived, and synthed-out, completely losing the feel, passion and desire that they obviously had and brilliantly displayed in their first 2 albums. Sure some later songs were decent but NOTHING came close to matching the raw awesomeness of the first 2 albums...and 9 out of 10 Cars fans will agree with me.
Excuse me @elprado1963 but Ric lost the touch immediately after the Candy-O album. He tried to get futuristic with Panorama, and then adopted a sugar-pop formula of pure B.S. thereafter (verse - chorus - verse - chorus - instrumental break - chorus - chorus - Done. All in a 4/4 rhythm and virtually identical rhyme scheme - each and every song like a bad sit-com where there is stale predictable dialog interspersed with canned laughter every 3-5 seconds).
what would it take a person to have these wonderful songs... tell youwhat... this aint no vinyl you got as well... something does not add up here.. i have looked for this sont EVERYWHERE and cant find it... if your the only one who has it, why have you not been fucked the the big wigs for releasing it? and if this is pre cars... this is way to advanced for the 70's... the rest of the music onthe album is passable... but this is way to advanced... WTF man.. lets hear the truth... RIP BEN
Tell me where to get this song. I have searched everywhere and can't find it. Would love to have the song. I have the album "The Lace" but this is not on it. :(
@mlts53 visit carsunreleased . com that's where slance1 downloaded all these songs. but i think it's down because people (like slance1) downloaded but never contributed $ to keep the site up.
I just heard the Cars new album, then did a search on Ben and found this and a bunch of other songs he did that were never released. The Cars are infinitely less of a band without Ben...it's painfully obvious on their new Album "Move Like This". Ric should have let Ben write some of the songs while he was still alive. It would have provided a fresh dynamic and direction that is sorely lacking in the Cars last 4 albums, including this new album. Thanks so much for posting these wonderful songs!!
@jingleburp I agree...unfortunately it seems there was a bit of jealousy going on...Ric had negative things to say about all the guys except Greg...too bad he didn't realize the Cars were a group of four guys who each contributed to the sound. Now that Benny is gone, Ric seems to realize what a great group of guys the old band was...the Cars today are not as good without Ben...never will be.
@jingleburp Sorely lacking in the last "4" albums ????? The last 3 CARS albums before this last one were fantastic so ur statement holds no weight. And, Ben Orr provided lead vocals on those 3 albums and there is absolutely "NOTHING" wrong with Ric's lyrics, he is a songwriting genius. I do agree that they are not the same w/out Ben but what do you want them to do, he passed away 10 years ago and showed respect by not replacing him with anyone..
@sidafree88 Please, what does religion have to do with Ben's legacy? Don't you think that the world is complicated enough? Can you accept a gift regardless of the religion of the giver? Ben Orr was a grate human being first and then a grate singer and musician.
A true music legend that will never be forgotten.I had a chance to finally see The Cars on their last tour and you could see that at that point nobody liked to share the same spotlight. When Rick sang Ben was almost off stage in the dark playing the guitar,as the same when Ben took the mike,Rick was almost off stage. They played great and I consider myself lucky to have seen him in person rather than see it on video.I miss his music, his style,he had it going on!R.I.P. Ben
sorry but this doesn't sound like this version would have been on the Milkwood album 73'

Slance, a million thanks for posting this song. I have always been a huge "Cars" fan but only recently searched and listened to Benjamin Orr's other songs. This is as good as it gets. His voice is son moving, angelic and powerful that I feel a huge sense of loss because he is no longer with us. Great powerful stuff....
brings back memories of when I had a huge crush on Ben and would do anything to meet the guy and all you know, and actually did some crazy things to try to. I finally met him once in Boston in a kind of unlikely way. I'll never forget.
@Gravelandart It was never released. It was for a follow up to his solo album 'The Lace'. Don't know what year, I'm guessing it was recorded sometime in the 90's?
WOW .. what a nice song and voice!!! I heard this song from the first time yesterday...I had no idea, that he also was the singer in The Cars besides Ric Ocasek...But when I wanted to see the video "Drive" ..I got surpriced and had to check up the history of the band.....I must say..two diffrent men who made The Cars complete.....R.I.P Ben Orr
if I saw someone walking around with that face of his in the picture I think I couldn't help myself and would walk up and kiss him...on the lips...and hope for more...
Hi ! I'm an italian fan of The cars, and, of course, of Benjamin Orr !! I wanna really thank you for have posted these rarity... Can I ask a question? Do you know the year when he recorded these songs? However, thanks again for sharing wonderful songs of Ben... God bless you!
God I miss Ben. What a legacy. Rhino SO needs to get on releasing this material. I wonder who has control of his estate, i.e. whom needs have a conversation about a retrospective compilation?
R.I.P. Ben. Thanks for making me cry when I hear you now.
@spacewalk001 An option would be to get in touch with someone related to Ben and pose as a businessman interested in releasing a new compilation or box set called "The Ben Orr Experience." I know that he has a son named Benjamin Orr. His son might know who inherited the unreleased master recordings, or at least be able to steer us in the right direction. You have to be confident and creative, otherwise nobody will take you seriously and nothing will be done to release this fantastic music.
Slance, thanks for another fantastic song. Listening to it has brought tears to my eyes. It is such a wonderful reminder of what an amazing voice Benjamin had. He may be gone from this earth, but he will live on through his music and the music of the The Cars. There will never be another Benjamin Orr.
Slance, again you post rare, great quality, footage of many of our favorites band and musicians. Please keep it up. We appreciate your dedication to these rock geniuses. Thank You seems not to be enough.
This is a truly sensational song. I believe as good as Drive.
A very sad and melancholic song considering Ben has left us. I am enjoying all the unpublished Ben Orr music that I would never have got to hear if it wasn't for Slance and You Tube.
where can i get my hands on the milkwood cd (album ) and also this lost track....or maybe even tracks. this man had such a great voice and Ric knew it.
I once saw a cd of his 'lost songs' (as the seller called them) on ebay many months ago with samples, but lost the bid and then it never came on again. I figured the seller was going to be repeat listing it but no, he/she only did one as I was searching ben orr frequently at that time and the months before. Anyway found them here to listen to. Thanks a lot Slance. You are not breaking the law, you are sharing some unreleased songs that float around with a wider audience. Ben would appreciate it
What a song! This is evidence of record company stupidity. I will take a dive and say that without Ric Orr the Cars are diminished to an also ran pop outfit. Sure they would have had hits.....Even Mutt Lange has commented on his sense of melody....and that voice. I believe in God, but do wonder at times why such a sensitive and talented soul was taken so soon. I would love to know how to get the rights to release this. If anyone has a clue let me know. Much has changed in the age of intrnet
I love this song. I wish we could talk Rhino records in to releasing this last album. Thanks so much for putting these songs on here Slance1. Do you have any Milkwood tunes you could post as well?
Dear YouTube friends: Mr. Orr was a genius. Unfortunately, God only knows why people come and go. I will never agree with God's design. I am not a catholic. I believe some alien (God's envoy) made earth and men. It seems for God life has no meaning. Some are born, some die,so easily,so sadly. Ok, let's forget it!
slance - thanks for posting this songs ,i always wonder why this second album never came out. it is wonderfull. is there any more songs from this second album .and how did you found this songs ? best regards
A British fan of The Cars through my dad and only recently found out Orr had died. Will never confess to be the greatest cars supporter but I remember enough of good music to remember his awesome yellow shades while singing Drive at Live Aid 1985
I dunno man, I didn't really like those, I dig Ric's shades... Though the thing I'll always remember about Ben is his AWESOME looks(better than even Ric's!) from 1978-1979!
Slance - I have been so wanting the world to hear these songs for they are the gorgeous, inimitable, honey-voiced Ben at his best. And he was just getting started and really coming into the 2nd phase of his career, I'm sure, when the random, senseless universe interceded. Don't answer your phone, I think its Ben's estate calling!

This is post cars. Milkwood was pre cars and was actually a folk album. There are several Ben Orr songs that deserve to be released
aphill77 3 years ago
Uh... I know that :) Same with Cap N' Swing :) Though this is not Milkwood.
Slance1TheComedian 3 years ago
Yes, but the picture is of Milkwood

what is the origin of this song. is this after the cars?
clarence99 3 years ago
Yes it is, it's maybe from 1986 or it's from the 90's

A British fan of The Cars through my dad and only recently found out Orr had died. Will never confess to be the greatest cars supporter but I remember enough of good music to remember his awesome yellow shades while singing Drive at Live Aid 1985
Ihateprovos 3 years ago
I dunno man, I didn't really like those, I dig Ric's shades... Though the thing I'll always remember about Ben is his AWESOME looks(better than even Ric's!) from 1978-1979!

It really is a treasure that you brought these
songs to all of us. They really show just how
much Ben Orr had matured as a solo artist.
These songs are so richly textured, and his
voice was at the peak of perfection. It is
too bad the tracks never got a chance to reach
all of his fans. But thanks to you, we at
least have the ability to listen to them.
Thank you for that.
