  • The reference to Nixon wasn't shouldn't be taken as out of context. The shot was from a short docudrama called To The Moon about the Poet Theodore Roethke and his relationship to Seattle's Blue Moon Tavern. I posted it because I think Linda gives a nice reading. Thank you for the research. I believe you are most likely correct.

  • Lykve is correct. Auden wrote this poem in response to the August, '68, crushing of the Prague Spring. Here's an updating: from Rand Cop. To Citizens United with nod to Auden The banks do what the corporate can, deeds quite impossible to man. But one prize is beyond their reach: the banks cannot master speech.   • I do belive that "the ogre" was a reference to Brezhnev and the Warsaw pact invasion not Nixon.

  • Huh? The poem is about the Soviets and their allies who crushed the "Prague Spring" in August 1968. Nixon didn't take office (as president) until 1969, so he hadn't had the opportunity to subjugate anyone yet.
