I think that Peck offered a balanced, complicated Ahab, even in his madness, but Stewart's interpretation of madness was so genuinely complete and irrevocable, that it's almost hard to believe that he's only playing a role. So, when I think of Ahab's madness, I think of Stewart's portrayal.
does anyone know where i can watch this movie at...And i think they should come out with a new version and have johnny depp play captain ahab. Bad ass.
i definiely agree on a remake of this story, as big hollywood production, but johnny depp as ahab? no fucking way just because of his pirates of the carebian (h/e u spell it) movies? nah, doesnt match
@silvertamagachi I like it. When I first watched this movie I never read Moby Dick or heard much about it (sometimes I would hear about it in TV shows, but it wouldn't interest me). Then one day I was bored and it was the only thing on TV that I could find, so I decided to give it a go. I watched it and it was great! I wish I could read the book now :P
It did stay a lot truer to the novel - it included important things such as Ahab sneaking aboard his own Whaling crew and the hunt for Moby Dick being much longer. But I think the 1956 version was so much better just on acting practically everyone in this TV movie just totally hammed it up, including Patrick Stewart. It just had a crummy feel about it throughout the way characters such as Queequeg were played, was borderline ridiculous.
in a way actting did kinda screw up the 1998 verison and but the way how it showed the ship sink i thought was cool but all in all this 1 did follow the novel alot more that the orignal but they were both good movies and yes i think Peck did a better job at Ahab. i saw ur other comment and yes it would be cool 2 see this movie remade with now a days special effects.

I feel Stewart's portrayl of Ahab was more true to Melville's vision for him. You hate him but you can't help but feel sorry for him.

NOTHING (including this) comes anywhere close to the original Gregory Peck version of the early 50's...............
In context the original is far far superior
