  • There hasn't been a singer with his unique voice or charisma since he sadly passed away so young. His music lives on though.

  • made me cry this song did and proud to say beautiful luke u absolute legend

  • One of my Favorite childhood poems - Deals with loving someone, confusion and that love is not returned. "Queen of Hearts making Tarts - And I not making Hay" has powerful meaning. Without doubt Luke is the best at it

  • He was amazing! Beautiful song, and he is missed. Thanks, Luke, for everything!

  • jesus what can i say but brillant gets me everytime what a voice.

  • I worked with Luke's brother, a very nice fella, and he missed him terribly. It's a great shame that Luke is gone, but we have these recordings, and within that we really have Luke, his brother told me that he loved that new people came to Lukes music, and that to me is mega, sure I was an infant when Luke died but it doesn't mean we can't all love his music!

There's lots of sorrow in the world, this music is about forgetting that and lifting yourself out of any bad places you may be :)

  • and thank you Luke Kelly

  • thank you Patrick Kavanagh...

  • how could 36 ppl not like this song. Without question one of the most beautiful songs ever written.

  • @billyhunchback

    32 people are pure IDIOTS

  • i love this man

  • Patrick Kavanagh wrote it as a poem. The Dubliners put it to the Music of a Marching song, "The Dawning of the Day" Of course, they slowed it down considerably. The Irish Army Number One Band plays it regularly on Parade.

  • The Irish never really leave Ireland. Wherever they are in the world, their heart is always in Ireland. Other nationalities, in my experience, seem to be able to throw off their birth place, but not the Irish. When I listen to this song, I too want to be there.

  • Comment removed

  • If Kavanagh was the only one who could write it then Luke is only one who could sing it.

  • This song is about Hilda Moriarty from Dingle, Co. Kerry .

She was doing Medicine in UCD.

" Paddy " Kavenagh met her on Raglan Rd. & she introduced herself to the great poet, - she knew of his writings, & asked him " why don't you write poems about people, - instead of the countryside...??? "

    He said ;- " I'll write a poem about YOU ..! "

Benedict Kiely heard kavenagh recite the poem in a pub, & saw the rhythm fitted " Fainne Geal an Lae "

He asked Luke Kelly to sing it.

    - History
