  • Marriage is NOT a right. It is a privilege. Is there a right to marry a person who refuses? No. Siblings, parents or immediate relatives? No. More than 1 person? No. Still I appreciate the honest of Great Affinity. Apparently it's okay to commit theft against someone who differs w/you in issues. & this isn't pursuit of happiness, freedom or life, as marriage is NOT a right.

  • Per CA Family Law 297.5 gay couples don't have to pay more taxes, and have the same benefits in domestic partnerships. Many 1000s of gays would be quite satisfied w/domestic partnerships as they believe that the ideal of kids getting a mother & father at the start of their lives should be promoted via 1 man: 1 woman in marriage and they put the needs of society & kids above any possible wants of adults.

    Why did you mention children? This legislation did not affect them as gay marriage wasn't decided by this.

    I mention kids, because this issue really is about kids. 1 man: 1 woman as the ideal leads to father:mother raising the kids as the ideal. If 2 men or 2 women are allowed to marry, then it is 2 dads w/o mom or 2 moms w/o dad are considered of equal value for the kids as a mom & dad. cont...

If we teach them that gay & str8 of equal value, many will decide toward gay. Some people are of course fixated in 1 direction, but most aren't.

  • Um... Yes, they do learn about marriage in the schools. Parents in MA complained about a book, "Prince Marrying a Prince" and in San Francisco, CA 1st graders were taken to a same-sex wedding. Marriage isn't a right, so this isn't about equality, but what is the best form of marriage for society. 1 man: 1 woman leads to dad:mom for the kids. Are 2 dads w/o mom or 2 moms w/o dad equally good for raising the kids as a mom & dad?

  • CA has opt-out laws, MA does not. The students and parents were warned well in advance of the same-sex wedding and 2 parents opted-out.

    Soceity? 2-3% of people will always be gay and marriage does not change this.

  • @ofelixdacat The constitution of the USA gives no reference to sexuality. It is a state matter anyway per the 10th Amendment. & Yes, marriage is a privilege; that's partly why divorces occur. If you don't earn your marriage w/your spouse, then expect a divorce. A relationship is earned. A marriage is earned from that relationship.

  • @Aegius The constitution however does prohibit discrimination against gender, which is what banning same sex marriage does. Telling someone they cannot marry a person due to their gender IS Gender discrimination, which is therefore unconstitutional. It's no different from banning a person from voting a certain way, or driving due to their gender.

    A marriage is not a degree, you don't earn it, which is why ANYONE can drive up to a Las Vegas drive thru Chapel & get married in 5 mins.

  • @ofelixdacat Interracial marriage is now legal indeed per Loving v Virginia, but it doesn't redefine marriage from 1 man: 1 woman to man:man or woman: woman. The definition of marriage didn't change w/Loving v Virginia. The definition of marriage applies to both sexes equally, so there is no discrimination of sex. In fact marriage isn't referred to in the 14th Amendment anyway, so it really doesn't apply. However traditional English common law does apply & that ALWAYS was male:female only.

Per the 14th amendment, interracial marriage was now legal in all states, yet a majority of people at the time were against it. Interracial marriage is still legal to this day, & there are millions of interracial couples. Their lives have NO effect on me or anyone else whatsoever, & hasn't caused any catastrophic problems which is why banning it in the 1st place was pointless. Race has no effect, neither does gender

Banning that is ALSO discrimination. 1 man+1 woman is the tradition of English common law and was upheld in Mormon Church vs. United States in 1898, Loving v Virginia and every other ruling, so it is part of Constitutional Law per case law. That is how it has ALWAYS been defined equally to BOTH sexes, so there is no discrimination per sex

What someone wants to do with their own personal life is THEIR choice, THEIR Decision, and have absolutely 100% no effect on you whatsoever, however I don't see millions of people pushing to have incestuous marriage legalized, however there ARE millions who do want same sex marriage legalized.   • @Aegius Traditionally, Marriage was the joining of two strangers of the same race, who didn't know or love each other, for the sole purpose of producing children. AND the wive was the sole property of the husband, she had no rights, and no say, & the husband could do whatever he wanted to her,including beating her.

    Obviously, that definition has changed, and continues to change. Definitions change all the time, & the definition of marriage is no exception.

  • @ofelixdacat The 14th Amendment of United States Constitution was adopted on July 9, 1868 as one of the Reconstruction Amendments. Did the Republicans who authored it and pushed for it had any intention of redefining marriage, when they authored it? No. The notion of redefining marriage as man:man or woman:woman has only been around for 15 years in fact. There is no relation to the history of the 14th Amendment & same-sex marriage. None. Period. End of story.

  • @Aegius No, and the Republicans who authorized it probable didn't intend for it to govern property ownership, housing, schools, and other things in which the 14th amendment is used to prevent discrimination. The idea of Segregation of public schools didn't exist when the 14th amendment was written, neither did the idea of interracial marriage. It is still relevant to today's laws. Discrimination is still discrimination, even if it didn't exist 142 years ago.

In fact every moral, philosophical tradition in history has had marriage solely as male:female and has pertained to the bearing & raising of kids. If male:female is regarded as the same as male:male and female:female, then we are saying that there is no difference in the sexes psychologically & emotionally or in their relationships to kids. Do you believe that?

  • The US constitution is suppose to protect the freedoms, pursuit of happiness and liberty of all its citizens. Therefore, to not allow gay people to marry is indeed, unconstitutional. That does not mean I agree with their behavior, I have been the victim of reverse prejudice for being straight! However I am a firm believer in equal rights for all US citizens, it is a principal this country was founded on.

  • It is midnight in Wisconsin as I type. I am looking at the votes of Prop 8, as they're coming in. Right now, Prop 8 is winning by about 300,000 votes. But only 18% of precincts are reporting. You knwo what I'm doing? I am crying, even though I'm in Wisconsin. Cali + Conn + Mass were my HOPE that some day I will be able to marry. It is NOT up to YOU WHO I can MARRY.
