03 The Clocks - Howard Shore -- "Hugo" Soundtrack

I think the ST is wonderful and fits the movie perfectly.

The problem with this soundtrack is that every track sounds the same; there's not much originality, either. "The Thief" is a lot like "Concerning Hobbits", also by Howard Shore. I know Shore and Scorsese collaborate on many projects, but I feel that a score by perhaps Michael Giacchino or even John Williams would have a bit more originality and be more oscar-worthy.

@PRIORITY60 I see your point, but I think that the entire idea of the soundtrack was to be similar, yet have slight tweaks to elicit different responses and emotions from the viewers, and to play along with the mood, despite sounding so similar to the previous or following track. Plus, wouldn't it be a little fun to reference your own older pieces for the sake of fondness and cleverness alone? Considering you recognized the similarities, you would know it was Howard Shore making this music.

@kagegeawesome Well said. It's just that I expected a little more creativity with a track called "The Clocks". For instance, I'd expect nearly all percussion used to be perhaps chimes or movements of the inner workings of the gears. Perhaps there would be a ticking noise used as a metronome in this track. Something that would really resemble the music of a clock.

@PRIORITY60 Howard Shore puts a lot of effort into scoring films, especially instrumentation. In some cases he makes the "obvious" choice and others he choses to be unexpected. In any case, I trust is decision. Although, I do believe he over-analyzes and rumor is he commands a lot of pay and is hard to work with.

@blue4everd Just a little update on my previous comments... If you want a good use of a title like this, check out Hans Zimmer's track on "Sherlock Holmes; A Game of Shadows" called 'Tick Tock'

@PRIORITY60 if Dario Marianelli had scored this then I think he would have done just that, like the way he used the typewriter in Atonement. I guess Howard Shore is just a little more subtle - you can still hear a distinctive ticking keeping the beat in the background like at 1:40
