@hunebau I'm assuming by the few words I recognize that you don't like the review? If so, what about it made you so mad that you didn't want to type it in English?
It used to be my favorite beer for a while, but after a while it became too much of a 'safe' beer. So it changed into the one I still think that's one of my best beers: 'Karmeliet'
You don't have the good glass :), and you mustn't put in the what is at the bottom of the bottle, there might be some deposit and it's just disgusting :)
@MrNealR The tulip glass is OK for the beer but I wouldn't mind having a "real" glass. I know many people disagree with me but I oftentimes enjoy tasting the beer with the sediment. Most of the time it isn't disgusting. I do try the beer without the sediment 1st though. Thanks for watching!
Don't mean to hate man. I think the bottle says 05-08-2009 which is the 5th of august in belgium. Not the 8th of May like it would be in America. cheers
@jbrookeiv It's a very good beer. I'll try to check out some of your reviews. I need to do more Belgians (beers) :-) We need to get together again. When will you be in town?
@VideoBeerReviews We definitely do need to get together next time I'm in Atlanta. I should be back over Thanksgiving and Christmas. I'd love to do a joint review that we could post on both of our channels. Maybe I could bring some Cigar City stuff up with me over Christmas? I think I still owe you a bottle of DFH 120min as well.

what a beer!!! Finally had the chance to try it and it's amazing i'am really enjoying this. Great Review by the way You hit every "note" of the beer. Thanks
Nice review! Orval has become one of my favorite brews...I love the earthy quality that it has. As far as pouring, I poured one into a Chimay Chalice and found that the best way is to pour it slooowly right down the center (no tilt). I got a good dome-y head on it and also got alot of the brew in. Don't know if it's the same for the Tulip glass but it's worth a shot.
great review mark,i've had all the trappist ales including westvleteren 12,chimay blue is still my favorite, followed closely by orval, your pour was good orval alwaws pours a huge head... gonna throw you out a beer to review if you get a chance----- ayingers celebrator doppelbock!!!! cheers mark!!!!!
@CantStopWontStop818 Hey, I pour the beer pretty good most of the time, I've just been on a bad streak lately :-) Fortunately a bad pour doesn't really hurt the flavor of the beer.
@VideoBeerReviews This beer, and also the hefeweiss beer you try (and probably plenty more), allways have huge heads, no matter how slow you pour, or how much you tilt the glass. It's how it is: you just wait a few minutes and pour some more.
As a beer, I think Orval is unique, due to the brett and the dry finish. It's an execptional beer to me. Good with dinner.
Also, for a beer brewed by monks, the bottle is very, I would say, worldly shaped.
@RuudJH You are right. Some beers are very difficult to pour. I could have done a better job with this one but I'm not too concerned about it. You are right about the bottle shape.
@shagohodds Oh, you don't know how much I want to visit Belgium! I would love to go there and watch one of the Spring Classics and visit as many breweries as possible.
It's funny you reviewed this because I just tried it for the first time the other day while I'm down here in Key West. You know a bar is good if they have a Trappist beer in such a touristy destination.
The bottle I tried was about six months old. I got a sour white grape taste and a touch of peach, but I wouldn't call it citrusy. I agree it was a little dry, though.
This is comparable to CHimay White but I think I like Chimay a little better. I'll try to review this when I get home.
@Chad9976 Wow, a bar in Key West with Belgian Ales. That is a bit of a surprise. I definitely got some citrus but it was fairly far back, the breadiness/funk was more up front. It was definitely dry though. I need to try the Chimay White still.
@VideoBeerReviews Chimay White is the best of the 3! Yeah craft beer is a rare commodity in these parts. But they do have some Florida beers I can't get at home.
It's back-breaking work during the day, but the leisure stuff is fun for the weekends.
I know that this beer is fairly different between each bottle, depending on how long it's been out and which batch it it. I didn't think it met up to the hype I heard of it, but I don't care for Belgian bready ales to begin with.
Like CraftBeerDrinker said, I can see this going really well with a hard, bold-flavored cheese.
@yuichituba Yeah, this one has a fairly strong bread or "funk" to it. I think people either love it or hate it. I love it though so the more the better for me!
@CraftBeerDrinker I'm not a cheese guru but i would think this would go great with a really creamy and salty cheese. Maybe Muenster or something like that. But I bet a milder Blue Cheese would go good as well. Also, I bet a "washed rind" (stinky) cheese would be a match IF you like stinky cheese!
in an interview mikkeller said he started brewing because of this beer......it's not my personal fav trappist ale but it is a great beer..... rochefort 10 is my fav...... if anything it's a great beer because it has led to many other great beers being made..... i believe mikkellers "it's alive" is a tribute to orval.. i like the name he chose because i remember drinking orval and all the bready funk and yeast made me feel like the beer was a living, breathing thing......
@cpalmer2312 I can see where he could get his inspiration from this. It has a lot of history behind it and it is very good. The "funk" in Orval is very nice!
Great review as always! I have always wanted to try true belgians as my store has a massive selection of them, but the prices is what usually turns me off. Also, it seems that you haven't done an IPA in a while. If you haven't had Green Flash West Coast IPA, then you should definitely try to get one, it's fantastic stuff.
@chchamp61 Thanks! Belgian beers can be a little expensive but many of them are decently priced. This one was $3.50 or so which is OK for the quality you get. Definitely worth it every once in a while.
I have a couple of IPA's in the fridge so hopefully I'll get to one of them here in the next week or so. We don't get Green Flash here but I did have it when we in Denver back in May. It was very tasty!
i don't like this video...

Actually, it's a little over $5 here for a single bottle of that size.

@dynelol That's a little pricey but not too bad. Its a good enough beer to justify the cost every once in a while. Cheers!

It's the best beer, but not in this kind of glass. Take the true Orval glass, and good flight to the paradize.
Cheers from Belgium

Trappist beers represent, perhaps, the holy grail of ales.
At least, in these modern times.
Although I am drinking the Chimay Blue as I watch this, I really understand your level of enjoyment here. Orval is a very balanced flavorful beer.
Great review. Thanks.
