I think many of you that have commented on the solo are missing the point. Have you ever heard of Jett or The White Stripes. Creativity sometimes is even more important than technical perfection.....
what is it with the `pick thang',,i practice both ways depending on the songs,,SOME it's much easier WITH a pick,,guys like Dickie Peterson and Lemmy Killpickster use(d) picks for 40 years(can you say VENTURES?),so it's quite viable and goes way back before `current' players that i see getting bashed for pickplaying,,,i don't feel that it matters as long as IT happens(songs get created),,could use a washtub bass i heard they are great!
Munchies56, that may be true, but this is a rock band, not a jazz band. the pick sounds fine, and the cheap SX basses sound and play pretty good. I have a beater I leave in my car and play at most gigs.
Oh, and I just realized that your answer to my first question wasn't even partially right. Bb dorian is the Ab major scale, failfag. You meant C Dorian. You also left out C Phrygian and Aeolian.
And BTW, I REFUSE to be a caliber musician by today's standards because modern music is in terrible shape. When I write basslines, I try at all costs to avoi dplaying straight root notes, and pounding out 1/8s. That's for shitty little boy bands like Jonas Brothers, Fall Out Boy, etc. I will NEVER allow myself, as a bassist, to be as mediocre as that. I always try to craft good, rhythmic, walking, fluid basslines and counter melodies. It's the only way rock music can actually sound good, IMO.
Also, I'm about 90% sure that you googled for those answers, and yes, I am very, very arrogant. Why shouldn't I be? When you are far superior to most people who do what you do you have every right to be arrogant. Music isn't about personality, it's about MUSIC. You can be as big an asshole you want, so long as you have earned the right. I've met plenty of people who were arrogant when they shouldn't be and had to knock them down.
False, I didn't google for those answers as I have had 2 years of music theory in high school, and I previously played guitar, however, I've never really gone in depth about the shit with C Phryigian, I know basic scales, and I know notes, beats, Semitones, tones, Augmented and Diminished chords and modes, and that shit. I understand where you're coming from with the "Being better than most" attitude, as yes, with a level of skill and success, SOME level of ego is earned IMO.
Incorrect. Geddy lee used a pick in a live perfromance of tom sawyer with an extended version when he did a bass solo. Alex lifeson threw him the pick and he started just doing crazy Art. Harmonics. It was only once of my knowledge but make sure you look into these things.
He might not be the most technically proficient bassist of all time, but you can't really say that picking a bass is wrong, or doesnt work, after what they accomplished as a band with him using one.
If the tone of Cliff Burton, Geezer Butler, Geddy Lee, and Steve Harris aren't good enough for you then you aren't a true metalhead and should just kill yourself. You don't need a "crunchy tone" for bass, it isn't the musical role. Just like most bassists don't solo, it isn't the role. Picks aren't for bass, and just reading your comment I can tell you are a major douche.
That was so gay I nearly cried. Cliff Burton was the original god bassist from METALLICA. Geezer Butler, BLACK SABBATH. And Steve Harris is the godly bassist from IRON FUCKING MAIDEN. If you don't know those bassists, don't say you play metal. Also, I just listened to "Chelsea Grin". It was EAR RAPE. That shit is not metal, it is screamo, otherwise known as metalcore. The difference is simple,
Stockell..you should be a comedian. Your comments towards these guys are fucking hilarious...fagottry?....ear rape? Where do you come up with such crazy one liners? lol
Now that we have established that you are a faggot and your music is shit, I am going to go on about why it is that I am better than you at bass for not being a picking faggot.
1. The aforementioned bassists had very crunchy tone without being fags.
2. I bet you can't slap worth a shit which is a style I am very good at.
3. Picks limit your natural ability to control dynamics, sound awful, and cramp your hand up, crippling your speed.
5. If you are going to say it's "good" to use them in any style of music, then there are still tons of more styles in which fingers are mandatory, but no style in which picks are mandatory.
6. It's not playing bass, it's playing "guitar on bass".
7. There are better ways of getting heavier sounds, like slapping. I'm sure you don't know what that means. It means you take your thumb and hit the shit out of your string. There you go, crunchy tone achieved. Also, Link Wray invented this thing called distortion, look it up.
8. Less people will hate you, increasing the chance of adding another person to maybe add some excitement to your dull life.
9. If you can't go faster with fingers you are not good at bass, and shouldn't claim to be.
And I never asked you to get a Gibson. I can't afford that shit, hell. I play an Ibanez soundgear through a line 6 amp. What I said was, if you have a squier, FINGERS ON IT WILL SOUND BETTER THAN PICKS ON A GIBSON. Also, that binds squiers to having the shittiest of the shit tone of picks. Again, if you were a real musician you would understand characteristic tone. Your "crunchy tone" doesn't befit a bass's characteristic tone.
Also, listen to Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth) and tell me it is shit.
10. The worst tone known to man is achieved in this way. Using a pick on a Gibson will sound worse than fingers on a Fender Squier. What you call a "crunchy tone" is what people that aren't beginners call "shit". You have obviously not been in the music biz long enough to develop an ear for characteristic tone, if you think that picks are even listenable.
I guess we need to start playing slap guitar, because we just don't give a shit about what sounds good and what sounds like hell.
wow. you seriously have enough time to talk shit over the internet. I'm only 18. (still young) have been playing for like 2 years(tops) and distorted basses sound like shit. I never said i was better than you. I just said that i wanted a CRUNCHY tone, without have to spend a shitton of money on an expensive rig. i play out of a squier. and and 1978 peavey mark III with a cheap 2x15. total price. 280$ im broke and poor. so i look for the best tone i can with what i have.
Congrats, you have proven to everyone that isn't a faggot how much of a faggot you are. If you admit to liking Green Day you might as well admit liking getting done in the ass. I am a real musician, I play Tuba, trombone, baritone, percussion, piano, organ, bass, guitar, mandolin, vocals, and ukulele. I play each one of them in valid styles. I don't play piano with drumsticks, and in the same way don't use picks on bass.
Alright, whatever, im done dealing with this shit, because im better than fighting over the internet. But if it makes you happy. I AM BISEXUAL. I DO TAKE IT IN THE ASS. And there is no metal scene where i live with kids my age. because no one listens to it. now im done fighting. if you wanna keep trying to pick one, because i wanted to add my two cents in. good job to you.
Wow, you have a lot to learn dude. You can create music anyway you want. Are yuo gonna sit there and say that John Entwistle, the bassist of all time, was not a "MUSICIAN" or was a bad bassist because he occasionally used a pick?? Wow, you're a serious asshole dude. And you have the nerve to call yourself a musician?? Oh, so you're the be al and end all of music, that's right, I don't see you being held in regard with the Beatles, or Bach, or Beethoven, you're a little speck on youtube!!!!
I have a lot to learn? Would you care to tell me what modes you can use to solo over a Cm9 chord? How can one create polyrhythms? What makes a dominant 7th different from a major 7th? How many beats does a dotted eighth note value?
You can play music however you want. And if you want it to sound horrible like the shit in this video, go ahead and pick. Nobody's going to judge you, unless you try to present it as something that isn't shit. As soon as you call it good is when you get judged.
Alright, now I will have to admit that you aren't the modern generic shit that call themselves musicians. (Even though you got the first question wrong. That could also be C Phrygian and C natural minor) However, you are still a faggot for PeteWentzing your bass.
>able to play
Who said anything about ability? I play guitar with a pick all the time. I am perfectly capable of picking my bass, just as I am capable of fucking a guy. But since I'm not a faggot I won't be doing that.
Anyway, I'm done with you. I don't need to argue with someone who is so buttfuckingly gay that he thinks it is okay to pick bass.
One last thing, I don't give a shit if you decide to pick, just so long as you admit that it is fully gay, sounds like shit, and you are gay for doing it. You are only going to get shit from me if you try to call it good.
To be honest in some genres there are reasons people use a pick. like to get certain tones with harmonics and such. But usually they just hold the pick in their mouth and use it only for that single few notes. But dont completely dis pick usage =/ some kids that play guitar but couldnt find a band looking for a guitarist go to bass. Its similar theory, you still need rhymical abilities, and you need to know how to play in a band the same way as everyone else. Still requires skill of some extent.
I play punk so I like using a pick because it creates a rounder sound. Especially because I own a Marcus Miller Jazz and it was built for slap. Just because I use a pick when I play with my band doesn't mean I can't slap and what not. It's all a matter of preference.
Using a pick with the bass is just limiting yourself, there are so many things you can do with your fingers that you can't do with a pick, you have much more control with your tone and volume and just overall sound. Not to mention that pick just doesn't sound right.
If you think John Entwhistle is bassist of all time you have obviously never heard of Victor Wooten or Robert Trujillo. Both have faster fingers than John Entwhistle, who was known for his finger playing, not his shit-playing.
The Beatles sucked unbelievably, why are you comparing them to Bach and Beethoven. They don't belong anywhere near them. Despite how "influential" they were, they were still really shitty bubblegum pop with a faggot-ass bass picker.
I'm not claiming to be a great and influential historical musical figure. I've got nothing on Bach and Beethoven. I am claiming to be better than everybody else in this argument. If you actually use picks on basses, I don't think I need to argue anymore. That in itself shows how much better I am and speaks volumes about what shit you are.
Also, dumbfucks, "LOLOL IF PICKS AREN'T FOR BASS WHAT ARE THEY FOR? LOLOL IM'AWESUM"
They are for GUITAR you dumbshits. GUITAR. If you go to zzounds or musiciansfriend and look for "bass picks" you will see that no such item exists! And if you bring up wedgies, those are for guitar as well, but they are a little better because they sound like fingers. Learn bass you stupid assholes and then try to argue.
It seems to me that you don't want bass players playing with picks so you can feel special about yourself and go around exclaiming how much better you are.
If changing tone doesn't matter with bass as you said then it doesn't matter. If the overall effect that is desired is achieved then it doesn't matter how they are playing. Music is different for everyone there is no objective way to look at it.
I don't want them to use them because it SOUNDS shitty, it ATROPHIES the musical role of the bass, it is so DAMN EASY YOU LOOK LIKE A DOUCHE DOING IT, and did I mention that you are comparing IRON MAIDEN to THOMAS LUNCH? Steve Harris has said himself that picks make a bass sound shitty. It is UNDESIRABLE and therefor your DESIRED EFFECT cannot be achieved with it, unless you are intentionally making your music shitty. Case in point, Thomas Lunch.
Being in the greatest band of all time doesn't make you a great bassist. John Paul Jones only had one impressive bassline, and it is easy enough for most intermediate to slightly advanced players to play.
Who the fuck said picks are not for bass? Did somebody wake up one morning and say "Picks are forever banned from bass"
Shut up you childish kids, ill play with my fucking nose if it gets the tone i want. Its a tone thing, ever notice it sounds different? Or are you too busy being a faggot? I dont use a pick but god damn theres absolutely nothing with using one if its the tone you want. A real bassist wouldnt be so fucking upset over somebody using a different style.
Nobody woke up and said that, he heard a bass with a pick, felt like ripping his ears out of his head, and began telling people the truth. Two men actually. Their names are Cliff Burton and Steve Harris. Don't ever call me a childish kids, because when you are as good as them, you begin to hate people that use the easy way out and use a pick. I agree with the tone thing, if we are talking about guitar. Changing tone isn't the musical role of the bass, and if you do it you are musically ignorant
Guitar solo had a lot left to be desired. As far as bass players using picks, I use finger style and picks. The late great John Entwistle used picks, so that should say enough.
Great sound, performance, pics, stage presence cool title of song & "AWESOME" vid!..My intrest was about the Rondo SX SPJ-62 vintage wht. Bass Guitar..WOW...& for the price U cannot be it anywhere!...$99..bucker-rulzzz!!! =0D
Yeah I know what you mean I own 3 SX electric guitars and so far 1 SX bass great guitars out of the box and perfect to learn how to do mods on if you dont want to screw up a pricy guitar
So far I've only heard that the bassist uses SX Guitars but I'm pretty sure that he only used it to make the video and not for any recording purposes but I'm not 100% sure on that.
I wouldn't be so sure that he didn't use the SX bass on a recording. I own a couple SX basses and they are pretty fine sounding. If you haven't heard one, give it a try. They stand up pretty well to any Fender, IMHO.
everytime i watch this video i enjoy it more and more. well you know the tatertots and robots song could be one of my favorit songs cause it still in my head. ok man i'll see ya around. see you out on the dangerous but forgiving potomac river.
Hello, This is Thomas Lunch. That's cool that you're phone came with this video! There were supposed to be quite a few of those made in Asia. What city do you live in?
i know where he lives hahaha like 2 miles away from me. mwhahahaha. he played at my best friends birthday, caz her older sister is one of "thomas lunch's" good friends. [even though thts not his name] and like we met him. hes really sexxy in person.
You guys do realize the bass you are hearing in this song may not actually be the SX bass he is playing. He may have used a different bass when recording this song. The bass he's using may very well be there just for show...
No, that's true, but it's good to see Kurt's products getting some press. They're a great value for anyone just starting, and Kurt's a good guy, why not.
lol, yea. the solo was really really bad, it sounded like he wanted a "freaking out" kind of sound ala Jonny Greenwood in Just by radiohead, but it was so poor and so completely out of context. Oh well. Diggin the SX bass anyway
I want to get that Ash P/J and put the maple block-inlay fretboard on it! It'll probably have to wait until after the holiday madness though, unfortunately. booo.

you know nothing kid... absolutlty nothing, stick to your poppy-emo bands.. been a fan of Nirvana since 89'.. too bad your life has to experience terrible music..
Thomas Lunch: Your video rocks, dude. The music and lyrics are off-the-hook. The video pumps with energy and the end is cool. When and where are you performing?
I saw them live in NYC and they were awesome!!! Redfire311 may be nasty, but wait 'til you watch them perform live - you may share that warm happy feeling ;)
Ditto on the "can't stop" listening to Thomas Lunch--great singer & song to have stuck in my head!! Need to hear more Thomas Lunch and see more Thomas Lunch!
The song sounds better when you can't see his face.

1. Bb Dorian
2. I've never done anything with polyrhythms but I do know that they're a bit more complex than triplets, and it involves beats and subdivisions.

4. 3/4 time.

MikeRGoldstein 2 years ago
I play punk so I like using a pick because it creates a rounder sound. Especially because I own a Marcus Miller Jazz and it was built for slap. Just because I use a pick when I play with my band doesn't mean I can't slap and what not. It's all a matter of preference.
fern2010 2 years ago
Pick creates a rounder sound? I'm all for using it to vary the tone but I've never heard anyone describe the sound as rounder... quite the opposite.
minusjason 2 years ago
Using a pick with the bass is just limiting yourself, there are so many things you can do with your fingers that you can't do with a pick, you have much more control with your tone and volume and just overall sound. Not to mention that pick just doesn't sound right.
Munchies56 2 years ago
AMEN BROTHER.
And if Geddy and John Myung can get that sound with their fingers there's literally no excuse for picking.
St0ckwell 2 years ago
No, ruling out a pick would be limiting yourself. You would be less limited if you did whatever you thought was appropriate for the song.
minusjason 2 years ago
If you think John Entwhistle is bassist of all time you have obviously never heard of Victor Wooten or Robert Trujillo. Both have faster fingers than John Entwhistle, who was known for his finger playing, not his shit-playing.
The Beatles sucked unbelievably, why are you comparing them to Bach and Beethoven. They don't belong anywhere near them. Despite how "influential" they were, they were still really shitty bubblegum pop with a faggot-ass bass picker.
St0ckwell 2 years ago
I'm not claiming to be a great and influential historical musical figure. I've got nothing on Bach and Beethoven. I am claiming to be better than everybody else in this argument. If you actually use picks on basses, I don't think I need to argue anymore. That in itself shows how much better I am and speaks volumes about what shit you are.
St0ckwell 2 years ago
I bet you're pretty good on the skin flute too.
castillo3065 2 years ago
Also, dumbfucks, "LOLOL IF PICKS AREN'T FOR BASS WHAT ARE THEY FOR? LOLOL IM'AWESUM"
They are for GUITAR you dumbshits. GUITAR. If you go to zzounds or musiciansfriend and look for "bass picks" you will see that no such item exists! And if you bring up wedgies, those are for guitar as well, but they are a little better because they sound like fingers. Learn bass you stupid assholes and then try to argue.
St0ckwell 2 years ago
It seems to me that you don't want bass players playing with picks so you can feel special about yourself and go around exclaiming how much better you are.
If changing tone doesn't matter with bass as you said then it doesn't matter. If the overall effect that is desired is achieved then it doesn't matter how they are playing. Music is different for everyone there is no objective way to look at it.
oddzilla1 2 years ago 2
I don't want them to use them because it SOUNDS shitty, it ATROPHIES the musical role of the bass, it is so DAMN EASY YOU LOOK LIKE A DOUCHE DOING IT, and did I mention that you are comparing IRON MAIDEN to THOMAS LUNCH? Steve Harris has said himself that picks make a bass sound shitty. It is UNDESIRABLE and therefor your DESIRED EFFECT cannot be achieved with it, unless you are intentionally making your music shitty. Case in point, Thomas Lunch.
St0ckwell 2 years ago
Yeah this Thomas Lunch band sucks really bad
oddzilla1 2 years ago
John Paul Jones?
BrickRoadDX 2 years ago

Rhapbus 2 years ago
I agree 100% dude. If picks aren't for bass then what are they used for. Stupid kids.
Kuchar13 2 years ago
Nobody woke up and said that, he heard a bass with a pick, felt like ripping his ears out of his head, and began telling people the truth. Two men actually. Their names are Cliff Burton and Steve Harris. Don't ever call me a childish kids, because when you are as good as them, you begin to hate people that use the easy way out and use a pick. I agree with the tone thing, if we are talking about guitar. Changing tone isn't the musical role of the bass, and if you do it you are musically ignorant

"Bassist" huh? No, you were the faggot of the band, pick-faggot. Picks are not for bass.
Also, that was probably the worst guitar solo I've ever heard.
St0ckwell 2 years ago
Guitar solo had a lot left to be desired. As far as bass players using picks, I use finger style and picks. The late great John Entwistle used picks, so that should say enough.
CorvetteCoonass 2 years ago
What are bass picks for anyway then?

The only difference between this and "mainstream crap" is that nobody likes this.
This sounds as stereotypical as watered down mainstream radio rock gets, it just lacks the catchy hooks that bring in any money.

that is one trashy/cool guitar solo. bass tone is cool too. Other than those things, the song has a generic feel to it.

Yeah I know what you mean I own 3 SX electric guitars and so far 1 SX bass great guitars out of the box and perfect to learn how to do mods on if you dont want to screw up a pricy guitar

Couple o comments
-do they all use SXs?
-ive heard better solos from unattended guitars
-vocals sound like trent reznor
wontacceptthis 3 years ago
So far I've only heard that the bassist uses SX Guitars but I'm pretty sure that he only used it to make the video and not for any recording purposes but I'm not 100% sure on that.
Alexzanderxii 3 years ago
I wouldn't be so sure that he didn't use the SX bass on a recording. I own a couple SX basses and they are pretty fine sounding. If you haven't heard one, give it a try. They stand up pretty well to any Fender, IMHO.

You guys do realize the bass you are hearing in this song may not actually be the SX bass he is playing. He may have used a different bass when recording this song. The bass he's using may very well be there just for show...
