Great channel. Loved Kid Creole (he had some of the "nastiest" backup singers ever. Came here because I was having a Dr. Buzzard's flashback and stayed for the rest.
i remember watching this snl eppisode mostly because of kid creole and also for the birth of a valley girl character named Vicki whom im dying to see her skit from this eppy
This season really had a crazy array of musical guests - Kid Creole, Captain Beefheart (also making his TV debut), Joe "King" Carrasco, and on the other end of the spectrum, the cast of "The Pirates of Penzance"!
I've been waiting for the 2 performance from this SNL episode. This was one amazing band & I'm grateful to Andy/Mundi for posting these videos. I was on an 8 year hiatus from playing bass when I saw this SNL episode way back in 1980. Thanks to Ms. Colman, I dug out my '65 Fender Jazz Bass & am still playing 30 years later.
Thanks Mundi.. I remember seeing the original broadcast back in the day... What a ground breaking moment... The US didn't "get it"... You guys were great.. It's a shame you split..
ha ha i see where david byrne got his idea for his big suit for start making sense.great video ,love both versions of the song, although for me the disco seems more poignant ..ironic...
1980, just realised I have been addicted for nearly 30 years. This clip reminds me of why I got hooked, it has everything: the groove, the choreography, and I wanted to dance and be as cool as the Kid ! Thanks for these great memories Mundi, how about a 30 year anniversary gig with all those who have been involved over the years. New York, Europe, anywhere in the world, you name it and I'll be there !!
One thing interesting you can see in this early shot : August was stealing the show at that time, all you could see was him !
Good thing that the Coconuts were eventually placed up-front next to him, their constantly renewed Addy's directed choreography deserved that ! As for Andy, no way you could steal any show from him, he always found a way to get noticed !
You know I LOVE this bandI rember though, watching them on Sat nite live and thinking"i just don't get it. I lived in suburbia. Then I moved downtown and heard Cab Calloway and James Brown and I got it; I got it bad. This band was ahead of its time. Today, with the right marketing(hello internet) their time is now.
TOP OF THE HEAP!!!!!!!! wow it seems like yesterday. How can this be almost thirty years ago? Love the close up of Cheryl at the start. Always my favorite Coconut.
At last, the long-awaited 2nd number from the first "small screen" appearance!! I remember all those dance moves the Coconuts did because my sister and I tried to recreate them for my dad the next day while attempting to describe to him this fantastic, outrageous new band we'd just seen on TV!!
