The roar in the early intro was far superior to the one used throughout the rest of the series. It was actually frightening. Imagine if you heard that out in the woods.
Beautifully well done intro. If the movies had been filmed with the exact same essence of this intro they would've done better. This is what they wanted to see on the big screen.
And the intro was read by a REAL giant, who also left us too early. Ted Cassidy, the Addams Family's butler Lurch.
Dr. David Banner: physician; scientist.
Searching for a way to tap into the hidden strengths that all humans have. Then an accidental overdose of gamma radiation alters his body chemistry. And now when David Banner grows angry or outraged, a startling metamorphosis occurs.
Ted Cassidy (also known as Lurch the butler from the 1960's The Adams Family) narrated the openingstheme from the TV serie The Incredible Hulk. He also provided the Hulk's growls and roars. Ted Cassidy suffered from health issues as he grew older and died in 1979 at the age of 46 from complications following open-heart surgery. R.I. P. Ted Cassidy aged 46 R.I.P. Bill Bixby aged 59 R.I.P. Jack Colvin aged 71
With all respect to Edward Norton and even Eric Bana, Bill Bixby will always be THE Dr. Banner for me regardless of what his first name may be. Norton physically is closer to what comic Banner looks like now but Bixby was closer to how the character was drawn back then. His personality was different than comic Banner's but his acting was so good that he redined what the character should be for me much as Ian McKellan did with Magneto.
@TheBronzeSkull As to the Hulk, no matter how good CGI gets, or arguments about how no human can be as big as the comic Hulk, it's meaningless compared to the feeling that the Hulk is really there interacting with the other characters. Mike Chickliss was right when he played both Ben Grimm and the Thing and told them he wouldn't do the role if they CGI'd the Thing. He knew nothing beats the feeling of the character really being there interacting with the other characters for the audience.
Another RIP, the voice in the intro is Ted Cassidy. If that name don't ring a bell, maybe you would remember him as Lurch in the TV show, "The Addams Family." He was only 46 when he died in 1979.
@DahcS Wow, I know Ted Cassidy played Lurch but never knew he voiced the opening to the Incredible Hulk. And that he died at 46 years old. DId gigantism kill him?
@Gossage54 I was totally amazed when I found out like 5 minutes ago that Ted Cassidy did the narration for the intro. I've been doing so research on him today and found some pretty cool stuff.
There was complications with an open heart surgery. So that counts out Gigantism.
@bjkdie No your not, I think Bixby and Jackman look alot alike. I was born in the 90's so sadly I didn't get to watch this on tv but I saw X-Men, Van Helsing and other movies Jackmans been in. Then one day Syfy had a marathon of The Hulk, that's when I fell in love with the series and now I got every episode. Anyway, the first episode I saw was Prometheus and as I'm watching it I kept saying to myself, "He looks like Hugh Jackman." If I didn't know any better I'd swear it was his father. Imo.
When I was a kid and an avid comic-book reader/collector, the Hulk was my favorite character and comic book. I remember not caring for some of the changes, like changing his name to David Bruce Banner from Robert Bruce Banner (supposedly, the TV show creators felt Bruce was too effete a name). But I really enjoyed the show and its exploration of rage, as well as the alternative -- being calm!
don't make me angry, you wouldn't like me when i'm angry!!! that immortal catchphrase, i'll never forget it!!!! this show was better than both those trashy 2000's films. the good old days . r.i.p bill bixby
"Don't make me hungry. You won't like me when I'm hungry." - "what the ???"
On the risk of infurating the classic fans, Edward Norton was the best Bruce Banner ever. Intelligent, controlled, always adapting to situations by learning. though tI did like the very few glimpses I got on this as a child! I would love to watch it now but I can't find it anywhere on the net. Pity!
Thanks very much! Sadly, Hulu doesn't like viewers from outside of the US. I'm being persecuted! Or something like that.
But Hugh Jackman and Bill Bixby? I don't see the similarities. Bixby is very controlled, Hugh Jackman usually plays gruff characters, verging on anti-social. (And also nude, not that I'm complaining ;) ).
When TV was good!! An intelligent spin on a ludicrous comic book premise! How will Marvel top the heart of this original show with the TV reboot they are planning. I hope they don't CGI the new Hulk. Watching Ferrigno as the live action Hulk was half the fun!
in some ways, i know how banner/hulk must have felt. during an earlier stage of my life, there were many times when my thoughts and memory became blurry. it was as if i were being transformed into a different being. it generally took a few hours for the transformations to wear off, and then i'd go back to acting normally--- until the next transformation. it has now been about 3 years since i had a transformation. i am able to stop the transformations by keeping my mouth away from alcohol.
It NEVER gets old when, at the very end of the intro, Dr. Banner looks up after staring at his casket and the screen splits in two sections, showing the Hulk screaming.
It PERFECTLY summarized the conflict, difficulty and turmoil Dr. Banner had to deal with as a result of his experiment gone wrong...
@Joelomite People can praise the new or modern Hulk all they want. However, in my opinion, NO, and DO MEAN NO, TWO characters of the modern era, WILL EVER REPLACE Bill Bixby OR Lou Ferrigno-OR EVEN (the late) Jack Colvin as Jack McGee!
this fucking roar at the end is bad ass!!! the other one I heard you can hear the word: "roar" too much in the other version but I love how it freezes up at the end!
I totally agree! One thing I always wondered about was why they changed the Hulk primal yell at the end of the intro? Later on his yell sounded more cartoonish, (think Hulk Hogan) than the primal yell that should have remained. Why change perfection?????
Back when the family sat in a room together and watched on the one 19" TV. The youngest kid was the 'channel changer' and Grandma smoked cigarettes from her rocking chair with the windows shut. The good old days!
R.I.P. Bill Bixby ...!! I was only 4 years old when I saw it in 84 but I became obsessed with becoming the incredible hulk during that time ...ahhh the good old times ...
Its to bad they had never came out with a Hulk woman, Like The bionic man/woman. A female version of the incredible Hulk, I guess it would have been like painting Wonder Woman green.
You mean She-Hulk. They tried a movie with Briget Neeilson (Sly's ex) but that wasn't even released. I doubt a She-Hulk would have come across well on screen.
Useless trivia fact: The intro to this is narrated by Ted Cassidy who played Lurch on the Addams Family TV series.
