I am not qualified to answer that.That is a question for historians,social anthropologists,and philosophers to answer The problem seems to be there are political and religious allegiances that are blurring the facts.We have school children in the UK who are told the crusades were attacks on peaceful peoples.Because intellectuals tend to be left wing their research leans toward anti western colonialism (bad) Islamic colonialism (good).The crusades were a response to invasion.
