I'm reading about early U2 at the moment and their early performances, first gig etc. I didn't realise this song and Street Mission would be so good considering how they portrayed themselves back then...wow
I had "Driving to Midnight Mass", a bootleg ep with this and some other great stuff, including the spoken-word title track. But yeah, he looks funny.
This is actually really good. It's got the standard 4 - part pop structure; it's actually pretty catchy. I guarantee you if weren't judging this relative to their later material, you'd think this is good, which it is; it's just a bit more abstract. I really like it.
When he was young (Bono) thought that the title of the album "Hunky Dory" was the name of a duo like Simon & Garfunkel. He discovered then that he was the name of the album and David Bowie was the artist... xD
It is interesting to be able to track a band from their start. I have demos and other rare recordings from most of the bands I've been following for decades, including U2 and Bowie.
You can't really track bands today because they seem to come polished, sterile, and boring right out of the mainstream box. Not that I'd care to follow any of them. The last band I faithfully followed was the Pixies. Before that Joy Division.
Having been born in the 60's had its benefits. We cared about music.
life on mars has been reporting existance of water I want to get Bono and myself up there and fuck for days on a trot and produce lovely frekled skin and red haired ofspring
I have to agree with tacosontheceiling. Robin Williams looks like he could be Bono's silly and far less handsome cousin. This is great. I enjoy David Bowie-esque Bono here.
I would really love it if people would STOP saying that Bono looks like Robin Williams. He's a great and hilarious actor and all, but Bono is about a zillion times more gorgeous.
Good job on floating your opinion out there but.........with a name like tacosontheceiling, you probably won't find many people who take you serious :0)......
He looks increasingly like Robin Williams with age. Robin Williams said people keep telling him he looks like Bono....actually Robin Williams' looks have changed little, and he's 8 years older than Bono.....so Bono looks like *him*.
That's funny...I remember in about 1983-85ish, I had a 8x10 concert photo of Bono on my wall, and my mom walked in, pointed at it, and asked, why do you have a picture of Robin Williams?"
Personally, I don't think Bono is as hairy as Robin ;)
Did you mean the Comsat Angels? Anyway U2 would have to have been fast to rip-off a band that released their first EP in 1979 and doing so in the same year. It's all just post punk, of course it's similar.
those irish bastards delayed their new lp to 2009! they're my fave band i am not ripping on them lol. it just bums me out. bono says they've written over 50 songs for the lp. so how about a double album or 2 lp's next year?

this won't be on the reissue, but it should, it's a catchy tune. there's some glaring omissions. the 'war' bonus tracks look a bit disappointing also, way too many remixes.
petheadd17: You are so right! U2 pulled it together with lightening speed, and got great fast! Around the 2:19 mark you can really hear "Joy Divisions" influence. These days Edge doesn't borrow from anyone.
Yes! The effect must have worn off on them because they shared the same recording studio as Joy Division in the early days! But they soon started incorporating many different ideas they are quite versatile really!
:) true! Once Edge realised his proficiency of the guitar under his own steam i think it let his own style shine through! It's still amazing to hear this though!
Edge is a guitar God! I'm so grateful that Daniel Lanois & Brian Eno will be at the helm of the new album. I think they bring out the beauty and complexity of U2's talent better than anyone else.
Petheadd17: The new album is taking a long winding road to completion. U2 started working last year with Rick Rubin in LA, but U2 bumped into Daniel Lanois & Brian Eno at Cannes last fall and ran away to Morroco to do some recording with them that had a middle eastern flare to it. All of that work has since been plowed under to seed the ground for the next stage of delvelopement. The lesson with U2 is patience+ struggle=better albums. I want them to get it right.
Ah! now i understand! Hope all of that pain-staking effort is worth it! although you have to say they rarely dissapoint us! And with all those explemplary producers on board there's bound to be some magical moments to savour! logging off now! but iv'e sent you a friend invite if that's ok!
i find it torturous waiting so long for a new lp. i wish they'd put out a big double lp one of these days, like the white album or something. 11 or 12 songs doesn't seem like enough when it's a 4 year wait!
redjaguar2, i sent you a friend invite, and as far as i can see you haven't rejected it, i can fully understand if you want to, but the suspense is killing me!
