Great videos. You might want to invest in a 5 gallon water jug to hold your Starsan. It can be reused for quite a long time, while maintaining its effectiveness.
I noticed the hops from that previous beer, would you recomend cleaning the keg after a beer that's been dry hopped right after the use, or did you not find any major problem waiting till your about 3rd batch?
This is a really great set of videos. The final line in this video goes a long way. I killed 2 brews because of no experience or knowledge of dry hopping and kegging when I started..
Bleach should not be used on stainless steel. It causes pitting of the stainless steel surface which can give rise to the development of rust. Other sanitisers are better suited for use on stainless. Use it if you like though
Really? Including all the time to scrub and sanitize the bottles? I highly doubt it. Not to mention if you force carbonate you beer you be drinking it within the hour. Although I prefer a bottle conditioned beer.
Meh - I guess you're right about sanitizing the bottles. I've found that a lot of time can be saved from scrubbing if you rinse the bottle with hot water as soon as you're done drinking it. Keeps mold from growing. I see your point though.
This guy uses a lot of cleaning agents. I wonder why you couldn't just use bleach to clean and sanitize at the same time? I'm not a brewer though, so maybe there is a good reason.
What would that good reason be? I am very fluent in the whole mocrobe world, so I understand the need for sanitation, but I still don't see why one couldnt use bleach to disinfect. hmmm.. best disinfectant known to man.
Yeah bleach is a great cheap and easy sanitizer, for a lot of things, however the chlorine corrodes stainless steel so that's one reason not to use it on your stainless brew equipment.
If you enjoy going out to eat, just know that many restaurants use a bleach, or soap with bleach to wash their dishes, and so do nursing homes. We used it to clean out a water buffallo in Iraq. It's a perfectly clean and acceptable way to sanitize. I would/ have used bleach to clean plates, and if you have a dishwasher, chances are you have too. Check the contents on most dishwashing sopas.
could you provide sources that states the FDA does not recognize bleach as a cleaning agent? I am finding a lot of FDA sources that reccomend the use of bleach as a cleaning agent. I do understand the stainless steel pitting issue though. Thanks.
I am going to keg my first brew tomorrow. cuz I was told it was alot faster than bottleing, after seeing this video, I think its easier to bottle. do you have to rinse so many times?
So you'd really give up the ability to adjust your carbonation levels exactly to spec and speed up your conditioning stage because you're afraid of sanitizing _one_ container?
Think about it this way: you can either spend the time to clean ONE corny keg or you can clean FORTY-FIFTY bottles. Your call. Just remember, you've got to rinse all those bottles too.
I've officially watched all of your videos, you are a man among men. You should do some vids that get more into choosing flavors of the ingredients and building your own original beer. Also you remind me very much of the rapper/producer El-p.
Is it really necessary to completely disassemble the keg to sanitize? Can't you just run the starsan through the lines & out the tap? This really is making bottling look easier.
Good grief, how dirty are these kegs? Do you do this every time you clean them? Taking this much time would deter me from wanting to keg. Better safe than sorry, but man, you must have the cleanest kegs in the state! ;)

Seems like the oxyclean would sterilize the whole keg and lines.

I could have racked and capped 75 bottles in that time.
Kegging is nice I guess but too much hassle for me.

Hey buddy starsan doesn't clean, it sanitizes. First you must clean it with a cleaner like PBW, then you sanitize it with a sanitizer like Star San.

jd575,
Yes their is a good reason not to use bleach.
And to have good hombrew it needs to be cleaned and sanitized.

i'm guessin its because bleach is poisonous, bad tasting and smellin.i mean you wouldn't sanitise a babies bottle in it, or your dinner plate.
just a guess

Just throwing it out there. The FDA no longer recognizes bleach as an acceptable sanitizer. In case you were wondering.

Keep in mind some people do not clean their lines/tap every time, which would save some effort if you're a bit lazy.

Why do you keep turning your gas off when the ball lock connector is self sealing?
BobbyFromNJ 4 years ago
There is a small leak when the valve on the ball lock connector is closed. I think I mention that in the video.

Very cool. Shortening the intro of the subsequent episodes makes them a lot more watchable. Excellent!
Thank you.
