Great to find this. I saw the very first performance at Stratford in 78. Judi Dench dried, and the prompter's voice was audible right up in the balcony. Very clever and entertaining production. Is there any more of it available?
I bought a VHS tape of this from the UK not knowing it would not play on an American tape player. I had it converted to a DVD. It was well worth the cost. The play is wonderful. Dame Judi is great as always but her late husband Michael Williams was superb. Some company should put this out on DVD.
I remember helping my sister rehearse this scene back in high school. I never understood what was happening though, I just thought it was a lot of unmitigated bitching.
if someone can help me....i have an audition for the part of adriana while she is doing her monologue ( ay ay antipholus etc etc)...should I inspire myself from her acting and of course try to put it in my own style..but i was just wondering if that is the "correct" way of acting the piece..
I played Adriana and honestly the best way to correctly act the piece is to break down every one of your lines and make sure you know exactly what you're saying...that way the words flow freely as if you actually thought and spoke like the character. Don't copy another actor's style, do your homework and make it your own, else you'll seem pretentious and false. Good luck it is a very rewarding part to play!
Why can I not find this on DVD? I guess it was never released. Do you have the rest of the film? If you do can you please please upload the whole thing? I just love it soooooo much!
@rosiescott88 You can purchase a VHS tape on Amazon.com.UK. It is a format that can not be played on American tape player but there is a company (ARKIVA) in Florida that can put it on a DVD. It is well worth the cost.
@kwebster640 Wow, that must have come out pretty recently, I searched for ages. I would definitely follow your advice, but some lovely people saw my post on this video and sent me a DVD copy of the comedy of errors completely for free, and now I can watch it whenever I feel down! Then they sent me all sorts of other Shakespeares on dvd just because I said what huge fan I was. I truly love this production and I wish I'd seen it live, though I have a feeling I wasn't alive yet!
@rosiescott88 I am glad you got a copy. I also love Shakespeare but the best productions I have seen are the ones by Trevor Nunn. His make the most sense and the story seems easier to follow.
I'm doing this and another extract from the piece for my final performance of my BTEC Performing Arts course...damn I hope I can do it as good as this... :|. Good upload though, there's barely any COE on youtube, nice one, (Y).
You absolutely made me laugh a very rare performance of Judi Dench in hr younger years but as she grows older gracefully is still the icon in my opinion and one of the most talented of actesst's. Made my day enjoyable thanks.
What a great post. One of my favorite Judi Dench performances, not readily available in the US. Also great to see Judi performing with her husband Michael Williams. The whole video is great fun. I would encourage any Shakespeare or Judi Dench fan to see the whole thing if you get the chance. Thanks so much!
As always judi is amazing.
