We were Kid's of 19 we arrived in the dark. So we went to the Hill. We had a place to put our tent and, a great view. The organisers knew what they were taking on. When I went back in 2009 ( no, the field just had cows on it ) I asked about the festival, every one knows where the Last Great Festival was held. They told me "did you see a helecopter leave"? Yes I said, " well that took the money with it, even the Farmer never got paid". We were Kids, at work, not anarchists. It was just made free.
@daveawebber, I am so envious. Was well into all this, parents went to stay with relatives on Ise of Wight and thought they'd just go to the hill to listen, really don't think they knew what it meant to me. Still.
i remember seeing a documentry on this event once , wasnt there fighting with stewards or bouncers ,trying to stop people get through the fencing, ,stewards armed with bars, cant find any footage of that bit
@kinggambitabc The Hendrix set was iconic and little did we know we were watching his last live performance. A truely memorable time and as I said before, a life changing experience for me.

I was on the island at a summer camp in Bembridge, aged 10, I'd never seen so many hippies in one place in my life.....I reckon some of them are still there!!
I wasn't born until the next year, but I watch performance clips from the film all the time. The festival was so phenomenal. I think Woodstock and Isle of Wight were signs that the rock festival craze was really starting to get big and would have gotten even bigger. However, the craze was actually assassinated by those two festivals because most of the audience at both did not pay to see them. They had to have something incredible for nothing. So promoters stopped organizing such festivals.
I was there, hitchiked from Munster to Plymouth,19 years young, and the only reason was to see Leonard Cohen, who the the 2nd last act on Monday morning, didnt wait for Ritchie Havens, just heard him in the distance as I walked back,,Does anybody remember meeting me???,,,,,If you did would u let me know....as have periods of that week-end that I dont remember...but,loved it,,,still play all the various artists on u-Tube,,,oh ,man.....I wish ,I wish....peace man....
Apart from Jimi my most wonderful memory is siting on desolation hill and seeing a wave spreading from the stage as half a million people stood with their hands raised in the peace sign to Amazing Grace, The Great Awakening. Is there a piece of film of this anywhere ?.
It left out the aerial view of the crowd, which is one of the craziest things I have ever seen. The sight of that many people in one place is mind blowing.
I was there too. I remember Hendrix playing the Stars Spangled Banner at sunrise. The whole thing was overwhelming. I had no tent, and don't remember eating either. A bit of a weird vibe at times, too. Not the love and peace of Woodstock....
Don't remember the Who, tho I do remember Tiny Tim who was flavour of the month at the time and jethro tull and leonard cohen and john sebastian, ten years after and THE TOILETS, We were miles away from the stage, probably on the hill too. But the whole experience was (i hate this word but..). awesome. I think we paid about £2.50 for the tickets. I can't beleive the price of festival tickets these days. Very bourgeois and corporate these days. Are the toilets any better?
Me to,made a lasting impression on me.I had a ticket and managed to get near the front for all of Saturday and saw some great performances,The Who,Free,John Sebastian,ELP and many more.Moved up onto the hill at the end of the night to find some room to sleep and think I remember getting woken up by Melanie singing on stage below.I had been blown away by seeing the Woodstock film from 1969 and it was unbelievable to be a part of Englands version a year later.
@spurs99 what id you think about the Hendrix gig ? Where you still on the hill on monday at 2:am ? Did you hear well ? Weren't you amazed by the Genius of the voodoo child solo sor instance ?
@kinggambitabc The Hendrix set was iconic and I dont think anybody that saw it would ever forget it. I was also under the impression that was his last live gig before his tragic death but FASTONE63 thinks not. In any event, as I said before, the whole weekend was a life changing experience for me and gave me my love of live music which continues to this day.
I was there as well. I remember getting there with no sleeping bag so I bought a cardboard contraption that was a sleeping bag. I don't really remember too much of the festival except for Tiny Tim. Unfortunately I started to smoke there.
Still cannot believe i was there, camping on the hill in a golf bunker with a tent over the top with a few mates. yes i did have a ticket but with all the queing decided to go to the hill instead BRILLIANT
tried to send you a message about this video - I think I'm in this documentary - can you help me find a copy please.... G
