  • I am from Mexico and I was in Edmonton 30 years ago and I went to a Spoons concert. Since then I have this song in my mind. Thanks for this video...

  • I can't believe I went to school with these kids...Burlington, Ontario :-)

  • This song always reminds me of The Edge 102 Live to Air retro nights at Whiskey Saigon and then Velvet Underground!! RIP Martin Streek!!

  • @Johnnywhamo Toronto still does

  • No Sandy is a god friend of mine and yes she resides in London ,Ontario with her two lil shit kids....Gemma

  • Still warms me, wasn't life fun and simple then? Thanks

  • *hears reference to old song on modern television show

*rushes to YouTube to post name of said television show on video of old song*

  • This Hour Has 22 Minutes!

  • Still psyched I got to meet Gord & Sandy last weekend! ♥

  • Love love love thank you!!!!

  • This song will never burn out. To this day it is played quite a bit on the radio. Enjoy

  • saw the year ...1981 !!!!! this songs one of the pioneers of new wave .way ahead of alot of groups back then ...gotta see them soon ...love the 80s music

  • back then I could never figure out who did this song. thanks for posting it!

  • Brilliant song! Uber cute female bass player! Striking video! Terrible name for a band though!!!!

  • I love the Spoons. I've seen them many time in concert in London ON Canada! Rob is hot!!

  • Its like a dream like song!

  • Gotta love the Canuck synthpop.....great era!!

  • simply one the greatest songs ever in any decade

  • For me quintessential 80's track.

  • yeah I'm over HERE now (private joke lol). Whoo hoo it's the Spoons what memories from the 80s lol:D. Love it!!!

  • EPICALLY Canadian!

  • Can't say enough about this song or band, a great Canadian talent.

  • love the orange

  • Awsome 80's song!!

  • Great song

  • nine people have no taste.

  • I love the 80s ideas of the future: lots of neon, glowing geometrical objects, and very long synthesizer chords. Who knew the actual future would be so lame?

  • @kinglouie1968 You make a very good point. It seems like there was a certain optimism present in the 80's regarding the future that you just can't find anywhere today. From my point of view, as somewhat of a pessimist, the future for this world appears very bleak and dreadful. Let's face it, overpopulation may be the most threatening factor to our survival. And I agree with you 100% regarding the lameness of today. The present is very lame and I think the future holds more of the same.

  • @revokdaryl1

    You're clearly the pessimist here.

The 80's view of the future was like the 50's; misguided and ignorant, flashy and silly.

I think the present and future are unbelievably exciting. I can't understand how its even possible to think for one second that the world isn't exciting and interesting. There is no explanation besides ignoring literally everything in the world.

We've never known, seen, been able to do or feel so much.

  • Burlington -- who'd a thunk it?

  • Canada and Toronto especially was a hotbed for New Wave bands. CFNY 102.1 THE BEST radio station back in the day. Not sure why but we really accepted new music. I miss those days!

  • @Johnnywhamo: Amen Johnny! I grew up in Buffalo and it was great to know that when you got tired of the same dreary commercial gruel played on the American stations, you could always turn to CFNY for something good, new, and interesting. I remember hearing these guys, Strange Advance, the Payolas, a Scottish band called The Waterboys (and a weird Irish band called U2) first on CFNY.

Thanks for the post - lots of great memories. Wish I could buy you one of those great Canadian beers. Cheers!

  • @Johnnywhamo i think it's our british influence, and let's face it the Brits are the champs for music, punk, new wave, electronica......amazing house dj's.....maybe it's that we smoke a different strand of weed than Americans? maybe....

  • For those those that are interested, the Spoons just released a new album "Static In Transmisssion", it came out last week. They are also currently working on the video for the first single "You LIght Up" . The albums is fantasic and you can pic it up at most record stores.

  • third most known band from calgary behind ,stampeders and loverboy

  • Bring back new wave! THats all I say.

  • I'll sleep in your nova heart

    as things come apart.

  • My ex wifes family lived next door to the drummer from this band, he gave me a set of drum sticks ..LOL...

  • o_O that was messed up

  • Comment removed

  • 1) I wonder how many yuppy types decorated their apartments in a similar fashion after having seen this video

    2) They're like the 80's new wave version of Fleetwood Mac...especially when you get the shot of the whole band.

  • Only 183,000 views? I don't get it, this is perfection. Songs like this one from the 80s really hit the heart.

  • Great canadian band back in the day. Brings back great memories of the 80s!

  • THE SPOONS was the first concert I saw during my h/s days in the 80s. That night, Sandy was the first one to ever make me consider marriage as a teenager. She's STILL beautifully timeless.

  • I just LOVED this when it first came out. Back then there were no laptops, no midi, no cells. Looking at this now, well... if we need proof of time travel, then VOILA! :) Thanks for posting this.

  • Too bad the audio quality is a little off. Anyone have it in higher quality? Please upload!

  • I keep coming back, Great album from my vinyl to mini disc to sound card into hard drive.

  • Wow, this really takes me back... this is proof that good music really does stand the test of time. The entire album was a masterpiece, used to play it all the time growing up. Wish i still had the vinyl... ah well, perhaps it's time to do some mp3 hunting ;) Thanks for the flashback...

  • love that roland tr 808 drum ! still today bands use it......

  • Went and saw Tron legacy last night, and all I could think of was this song...

  • Yeah that was a good song, i too also thought they were British at one time, until i also learned they were Canadians, and from close to Toronto too, i guess you there is right with a girl not getting away with being modest, but then that was the early 80s, that was probably the style then i think

  • I was in grade 8 when this song came out and I loved it instantly. I remember assuming they were British. I was into Joy Division, Bauhaus, Simple Minds, The Jam. I was blown away when I found out they were Canadian. It just made me love them more.

  • This is when music videos were made to enhance the story, rather than disguise the fact that the performer, not musician, has no actual talent, like those popular ones today.

  • Hard to believe this song is 30 years old!

  • I went to high school with these kids in Burlington, Ontario....who knew they would ever make it this far!! AWESOME!!!

  • Modern in the 80s seemed more modern than today.

  • brings back many fond memories

  • love this song forever!

  • A transplant to the Prairies from Hamilton, I miss listening to the Sunday retro show on 102.1 The Edge, also miss "The Ongoing History Of New Music" show too.

I have always loved this song, it reminds me of so much during my pre-teen and teen years, great memories, CYO camp, summers at the Beach and Hutch's, Ice cream at Stoney Creek Dairy, Wild Water Works, Canada's Wonderland, Hamilton International Airshow, Festival of Friends, Your Festival, Prudhome's Landing, WOW, What great memories!

  • @skatecubed I love the ongoing history of new music.. Awesome show on Sunday nights...

  • @skatecubed sadly the former host of the retro live to air committed suicide in 2009.

  • what an area of music!!!!!! makes me smile

  • I remember going to the Spoons concert in Toronto; what a great show; they all seemed a little nervous on stage for the 1st few songs what with beach balls flying around the audience. My buddies the next day said they saw it too; as City tv simualcast the visual along with CHUM-FM doing the audio for this concert. City`s Much-music finally brought out the DVD of the Toronto concert along with a Montreal show on the same disc and you can see the difference as the band matured over the years

  • Oh, also, Gordon Deppe was a cutie ;^)

  • Why would they do a " digital re-master"? The song sounds great the way it was recorded back then....don't mess with it!! I will never understand why people want to take original recordings and update them!?! These songs are part of a period in music history and should be left alone and heard the way the artist recorded them.

  • "you want to educate our young".....true, but only so much that they can read manuels and operate machines like good little mindless robots!,(Metropolis!!-1925), so i say study far beyond what they dictate!

  • Heard this on the radio today. Slightly different version, very cool indeed.

  • gordon and sandy are recording a new album, now.

rob and derrick left the group years ago, so the line-up has changed but NOVA HEART still rocks!

  • This song is 29 years old - and it still rocks. How can that be? Simple - the Spoons kick ass.

  • @psilva99

I recently bought The Spoons greatest hits album and it brought back so many memories. Too bad I can't find the last song Red Light on Youtube ..

  • @psilva99 ..because oldies rules no compare from new crappy justin bieber , pussy cat dolls, gaga etc..this was real music for the ears..i was born in 1981 when this song was on..still plays on much more retro i enjoy it i dont mind paying 5 bucks every month for this channel.

  • A fine example of Canadian New WaVE :)

  • Man, they don't make pop music like this anymore.

  • yum yum sandy. I wonder what she looks like now ?

  • @deadenear she lives in my hometown, works at the U. of G. I believe.

  • wow amazing song

  • Before I got access to youtube years ago, it was hard to watch this video because it was never played so the only way I could watch it is on those rare 80s specials.

Misheard lyrics and all when I was a kid, I still love this song.

  • One Word.." CLASSIC"!!! This Song Is The Ipidemy Of The 80's!!!

  • II loooooove new wave music :)

  • "Out of Sight, Out of Mind' was done by Level 42

  • I spent years attempting finding the album this song (Nova heart) was a track on (arias and symphonies) during the eighties. Thank you so very much for taking the time to upload it here. Stephen Wayne Reno Monday, July 19, 2010

  • SICK RIFF!

  • If you had to pick one song that embodied the sound of "The 80s", for me it would be this song. A true classic.

  • @mapleave...I think you mean blue peter - "don't walk on past"

  • These guys were better than Duran Duran, The Smiths, The Cure and all those poncey wankers.

  • Dear Youtube friends -- I've got a song on my mind and can't remember the name or band. It was typically played on the CFNY/edge 102 retro sundays. The lyrics had something about "out of sight, out of mind' or 'don't walk on by'. I'm not sure if I'm mixing up two songs up but I'm sure this will ring a bell for someone out there. My bet, if you like The Spoons you know and like this song. Thanx.

  • @mapleavenue77

song you might be thinking of: Blue Peter - Don't Walk Past

  • @mapleavenue77 Blue Peter played at my high school when i was in grade 9...i viviidly remember 'dont walk on past' sooo loud!

  • Class! real Class!!

This tune is one of those precious ones

  • after our little G20 thingy up here, this song has tremendous relevence!

  • Thanks for posting this obscure gem! I forgot about many songs/bands from my past and I'm really appreciative to find them by pure chance. If it weren't for kind uploaders who enjoy old school music, I'd be lost and miss out on great but forgotten music. Gotta go, 'Romantic Traffic' is next. :)

  • Beautiful song

  • We saw them last week Friday (May 28th) at the Boston Manor in Burlington, On.

As always, they were amazing. Brought back a lot of memories!

  • Takes me back to summer camp in '82 and dancing with cute preppy/new wave girls to this tune. Always loved this song. Thanks for the memories.

  • The lead singer lives on my street in Mississauga, Ontario:D

  • @grandmabenson1 Haha nice! I grew up right by the singer as well, I went to school with his daughter actually! Small world

  • wooo. my favorite.

  • I always liked this song

  • I remember seeing them live at Burlington mall lol

  • Sandy Horne was an extremely beautiful girl, she was like a cross between Carrie Fisher and Bjork. Many a concert we guys would fight our way to the stage to just gaze in awe at this little hot gal, to have a real good gander at her look at Spoons- Romantic Traffic all her looks aside she was a great Bass player too,I saw some pics of her from 2007 and she still gorgeous

  • An attractive girl in a music video made TODAY could never get away with being dressed THAT modestly !

  • @Skulldini Ha, too true! Even if - as in this case - she was a member of the band. No, scratch that - *especially* in that case.

  • @Skulldini YOU ARE RIGHT, BECAUSE IT IS CALLED "STYLE & CLASS", AS OPPOSED TO THE SLUTS THAT WILLING BARE ALL

  • @Skulldini true, and it's part of what makes her attractive

  • @Skulldini I've never seen Meg White dressed provocatively.

  • @Skulldini I miss the age when it was music that sold music and not sex. This was an awesome track!

  • great track!!! definitely stands out!!!

  • Beautiful song.

  • Fantastic song from a fantastic Canadian band!!!

Clearly, we're more than Bryan Adams and Celine Dion! (as good of musicians as they are!).

  • @mapleavenue77 funny, back in the day we were saying that in Canada we have more than Gordon Lightfoot and Anne Murray!

  • This song and video are timeless. If they did a digital remaster and re-released it to an unsuspecting audience, people might think it is new.

  • Comment removed

  • Beg to differ, there's no way you could miss the very early 80's sound of this track. The drum machine and guitar tone (two words: chorus pedal) date this track. The guitar and bass playing are far better than the computer assisted work you hear on most of today's tracks. And finally, the actual songwriting is too good to pass for a "something new". Nobody remembers how to write good melodies and good hooks anymore. :(

  • @M0ntr34l ... esp. with some 80s sounds making a come back, I think you're absolutely right!

  • @M0ntr34l yesss...i totally agree..and I wish they would do it with so many of them..looking forward to it:))

  • Canadian!

  • emotions i thought i never had...thank you...truly

  • This song is one of kind. Truely.

  • beyond their time

  • Phenomenal band. I miss them.

  • i wish i wrote this song.

  • Sandy is SO Beautiful... Even now!

  • I'm not so sure about that!?

I remember one day back in the 80's I stumbled into her dressing room, there she was my fantasy putting on make-up and I found her stunning then, even 5 feet away from her. When I finally got the nerve to say something, her phone rang and I think it was her boyfriend at the time....and so that was that!

Today though it's another freaking story. she does'nt even resemble herself anymore, it's as if she let herself go on purpose...maybe she met too many "dicks"!!

  • Awesome song! And of course Sandy is very beautiful.

  • This song has universal chime.

  • I seriously can't get enough of this song ever since I discovered it just a week ago at an afterparty :) What a masterpiece..

  • I've got the horn for Sandy Horne!

  • I heard an extended version on the radio when I was driving home from work yesterday. It's a beautiful song. Very ethereal yet at the same time catchy and memorable.

  • Very pretty. Has a strange almost unearthly quality and the lyrics are interesting. The video imagery does compliment the music too.

  • Truly great 80's music what do think Sandy is doing now.

  • She travels with another women mostly across Canada, doing events and workshops teaching about First Nations in Canada, she's second nation. I saw her today.

  • Couldn't agree with you more, "Sandy" was always cute, but ever more beautiful as a brunette. One of the favourites songs. They don't make great music like this anymore.80's music rock baby!

  • personally, I think Sandy looked better as a brunette; went blonde after this.

very underated canadian band; thax for posting.

  • I feel a download coming on.

  • OMD, Spoons, Mohawk College...1981ish.

Changed my direction at the time.

Saw them at Gage Park last year..thanks for doing "One in Ten Words"..my alltime favourite.

  • The 80's rock, I love this song and the feeling I get from the music, very soothing and takes me back to my youthful days

  • I agree with lovekisslaugh. Takes me back to being 16 and New Wave was King. Deep meaning and excellent synth.

  • This has to be one of my favourite songs ever. Hands down! I mean I've head plenty of beautiful music in my life but here is something speical about this. It takes you somewhere........almost mystical. hard to explain without sounding flaky/corny and that's ok too.

    x

  • This is great-vaguely remember one of the music papers here n the UK mentioning this band-other than that-never heard anything by them-thx for posting!!

  • when I was little I used to have a crush on the singer :D

  • Great example of early 80s Canadian new wave.

  • In a world of black fingernails which seems to be the trend nowadays, Sandy's white ones are truly sexy. Great forgotten song too.

  • "Arias and symphonies"> One my faves from this era!!! Also one of the best New Wave albums ever!

  • First concert I ever went to was The Spoons at Ontario Place. They sound just as great live! Thanks for posting.

  • The song is excellent; and I dig the video concept. Abstract, yet beautiful!!!!

  • song is indeed excellent. i think the video couldve been more nostalgic, new wave-ish and romantically edged. cross between russell mulcahy duran duran video and the eurhythmics "here comes the rain again" video.

  • I don't a give a shit what anyone says, this is still a great song. It's timeless.

  • Good song. Cute bassist. And Cristian Bale was pretty good on the drums too (just kidding!!).

  • No its him alright. He aged really well.

  • I have not seen this video in over 25 years. Remember the song perfectly, but I forgot how interesting the video was. Very very early 80's. I wonder why she's wearing a Victorian dress though?

  • a good friend of mine who's born n 1980 and I got me on to this...told her that i heard this music long time ago...she introduced this to me but a dub mix of...this music will remain in our heart, makes me cry actually:-(

    Very powerful music...I love it:-)

  • Two words...Sandy Horn :)

Saw The Spoons and Strange Advance back in the 80's, what a killer show! Thanks for posting!!!

  • strange advance had some killer tunes as well.

  • I've seen the Spoons live in Montreal at Le Spectrum in 1984 ou 85 if I remember : great New Wave band...

  • Video is kinda dorky, but also striking for some reason. A true early 80s classic and one of the best. Probably the most evocative song of my early years.

  • Video is so 80`s!You can tell MTV just came out huh! I love the song and the video still!!

  • Video is too hokey. Song is still strong. God I loved dancing to this...and "Doot Doot."

  • This is my FAVORITE 80's song !!!! I love the song, dont care at all for the video

  • Awesome sound

  • A different tilt to the New Wave movement, and a really cool one.

  • First saw Spoons back in the early 80's when they opened for Boy George [SF Warfield Theater].

Bought their Arias / Symphonies album after that and have loved them since.

  • theyre Canadian eh!

  • Met my loving wife of 26 years ejoying this tune. Our kids have since married and gratuated college. It has been a good run. The architects of the world will soon see their NWO come apart but we rest in the Nova Heart of Absalom Jesus. Thanks for sharing this song via the silver Spoons.

  • THIS IS A NUMBER 1 SONG

  • Beautiful song. Pretty embarassing video but hey, that's the way it was back then. Sandy was soooo cute.

  • met them yesterday

  • totally old school

  • A genuine 80's staple classic. The music industry today is so brutal, bands like this now would never get anywhere. Thank god for the simpler old days.

  • I agree. You don't need talent anymore

  • Boy - the guys take that Flock Of Seagulls dance to a whole new level. I bought this album in the .29 cent bin at Aron's in Hollywood years ago. One of the few good twenty-nine cent'rs. The opening instrumental track on the record is great. You could tell these guys (and girls) were really creative musicians trying to fit in the pop/new wave 80s.

  • a true golden oldie...cfny 102.1, the new music on citytv. old and fat now. cool then though! great song. one of my friends used to play the spoons all the time on our dorm floor at uni. had a big crush on the bass player (can't remember her name at the moment).

  • sandy horne

  • 102.1 the 80s, toronto,miss it.sucks getting old!

  • I miss these guys. Saw them in 84, had their albums. The best of New Wave, Canadian or otherwise.

  • This vid makes me wish I grew up in the 80's.

  • oh but now you would be old like me and sentimental about your lost years when you hear songs like this and resentful towards little tarts wearing tights and bad accessories b/c they think it is ironic... sigh

  • I grew up in the 80's. I'll trade you!

watching this... it's like a PARODY

    gah
