It's aluminum for two reasons. Aluminum is lighter and the ship is therefore faster and more fuel-efficient. It also does away with the threat of magnetic mines since aluminum is not a magnetic metal. I would presume it has a much shallower draft, which would also keep it safer from mines and torpedoes. My question would be , how does she handle in rough seas?

This seems to be the general theme for the U.S. military now. This allows for it to be equipped and set up for a variety of situations. So it can adapt and be used with a wider range of accessibility. The aircrafts that are being developed (unmanned as well as manned jets) are also being developed so they can be a base design which can be used based on the situation (used by Navy, Marine, etc).
