I've hardly been listening to anything else for the past 3 days. There is something about this man's voice and presence that is completely mesmerising me. In other words, this video has made me turn from a Keenlyside fan into a Keenlyside addict... :)
I agree. And he knows his way around the stage--he displays none of that awkward stand-and-deliver-then-hobble-around kind of acting with the random movements. He's a true performer, to say nothing of his voice.
My hands down favorite rendition of this aria. I love Simon Keenlyside!!!!!! One of the BEST baritones - actually, one of the best singers out there, period!
I don't think he forgot his words... maybe he exagerated on the pausa he made before restarting "perche han certo un grand perche" ... I also sing that aria and well, it dosen't seem to me that it's s big mistake... well, it's only my opinion!
Nice voice, and great interpretation... Meanwhile I'd like to hear how would thomas Hampson handle this aria... i'm just curious... But I liked rerally much that interpretation!
Thomas Hampson does it magnificently, believe you me. I have the CD of him, Kiri Te Kanawa, and Ann Murray, and his version is probably tied with Keenlyside's in my book. Even though I can't see him, I can tell his acting is fabulous, and he really makes the aria exciting.
this is great! but does he forget the words on that very last soft perche fermata?? it's supposed to be "hanno certo un gran perche" but he kinda mumbles it out. Haha, even pros can have memory slips :)
wow what a preformance..... I truly loved it!!! And he was either forgetting the words or being dramatic. Doesn't matter, as long as he could say that sentence in the end ^^.
You should watch Pisaroni's performance of this at Glyndebourne, as well.
@DoryViolet I agree, Pisaroni is technically impressive as well as extremely expressive. My new favorite is Ildebrando D'Arcangelo, though; I saw him last night at the Staatsoper Wien and he fitst the role like a glove, both vocally and physically. He is the epitome of burning masculine pride, no wonder he often plays Don Juan as well. Some of his interpretations -though not his best-are available on youtube.
I've watched this a lot and I've got to say his acting makes me smile throughout, his voice sounds especially great from 1:54-2:05, and I love how he softens the last "per che". Guglielmo looks like a fun role, and he does a fantastic job!
Beautiful aria! And he has a good characterization of the character and looks the part too (at least in my mind). But most of all, his voice is one of the most beautiful baritonal voices I've ever heard. Defintiely one of the best singers today! Bravo Simon!

i am looking forward to MET Don Carlo so much. I hope Simon will appear in the Live in HD transmission in the interviews too:-)
I just read Simon won an award now - Vocalist of the year - in the Musical America Awards.

Such a great aria, i guess it had the same effect on people at the time than rock'n'roll today.

Great voice of baritone.

He's like the Viggo Mortensen of opera. Understated, smoldering sexuality and pitch perfect technique.

Well, he hid it well by throwing the medallion...haha

Don't really see how he could have forgotten the words as at this point in the aria he is just repeating them anyway! :)
