the song and the fact the SNowman dies...seriously brings tear to a grown-up man. Brillant childrens cartoon that I watched back in the 80s. Best cartoon ever - Disney Bambi eat ya heart out.
Watch this every Christmas, and this moment is the best bit. The film is almost perfect, but for the inclusion of Father Christmas (something not in the book). Great song, and a lovely animation (although 240p doesn't give either justice).
Better than Aled Jones. Peter's voice is just softer-edged, if you get my meaning, and he makes it more magical. That's my opinion anyhow. Aled's still good, don't get me wrong.
Yes, its sad really...aled jones wrongly got the credit for this movie version...because they both have very similar accents...unfortunately due to time running out for production, the producers did not have time to add Peter Auty's credit in the movie...the 20th anniversary rights this wrong and Auty is finally given credit..but it's true that Jones made a fortune off this song..despite Jones singer the cover version in 1985. Auty went onto to be major tenor known through the UK and Europe rep.
wow, that brings back memories of being a lil kid. So powerful!
Remember those warm Christmas's where you were wishing Santa was going to come down and deliver your presents. Where you would leave him out mince pies and sherry. Where you would have trouble getting to sleep constantly looking out your window for him and thinking of Jesus being born. The lovely days of having all the family together drinking and laughing under that Christmas tree lit room.
I loved this song, when i was little(er) (, lol i'm 12) I couldnt sing this properly, so i just went, "We're walking in the air, we're walking on a moonlit sky, we're walking in the sky, we're walking very high...." lol xD
I like this, Nightwish's version, and Chloe Agnew's version. They all are AMAZING. Kind of cool hearing a male sing it, even if it is a very young male.
Peter Auty - the boy treble in this recording - went on to become a major operatic tenor star, at Glyndebourne and elsewhere... he's still singing :))
So good to see this again. We always dig it out of our tape collection. Hard to find a DVD of the original version w/ David Bowie beginning it. What a super traditiion for so many families, to sob together! Now more than ever, I say!!
"We're walking in the air... We're floating in the moonlit sky... The people far below are sleeping as we fly... I'm holding very tight... I'm riding in the midnight blue... I'm finding I can fly so high above with you... Far across the world... The villages go by like dreams... The rivers and the hills... The forests and the streams... Children gaze open mouth... Taken by surprise... Nobody down below believes their eyes... We're surfing in the air... We're swimming in the frozen sky.....
Aled Jones' version only became the most popular one after he sung it for an advert. In interviews he is quite candid about the fact he'd never seen the Snowman or heard the song before - he learnt his lines, sung it and became a celebrity. If I remember rightly, Peter Auty's voice had broken long before this. Funnily, I weep like a chld at Peter Auty's version and not at Aled Jones' one. Must be the Welsh accent!
always thought it was aled jones you have been a shadow in many peoples ears including mine for more than 20 years .....i love your voice peter auty <3
Ok so I thought Aled Jones was the original singer but I recently found out it's another guy called Peter Auty. So......how did Aled Jones come into the picture???
@mozart77 It was released as a single in 1985, three years after Auty's 82 film version. My guess is his voice had broken by then and they needed a replacement.
This is such a beautiful song. I had the book of The Snowman. Eventually I saw that actual film. This song never fails to make me tear up when I hear it.
no one and no nothing will ever melt my heart like the snowman. i believe in him more than i do santa claus and am a very old 35 year old man. i love the snowman. my heart quivers everytime................................................i
same here <shelli> this came on the tv about 11 years ago, and i was walking by and stopped dead in my tracks.. it was such a beautiful song it still makes me cry today.. why cant the world be as beautiful as this song seems to me
@Shelli133 Same with me! I loved this movie when I was little! But always made me cry that the snowman melts in the end. It also never made any sense to me why he melted & yet there was still snow on the ground. I still don't understand it to this day & this movie makes me cry still to this day as well.
This isn't the original version, it's Aled Jones singing.

Dear All,
I have some questions about psychology:
(1) Why do we love flying?
(2) Why do children like to fly high more than adults?
(3) Why do we dream about flying when we are asleep?
(4) Why do we want to fly smoothly in the air during Christmas?
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE for your creative ideas and brainstorm!!! :)
P.S. Nice song. I heard it on TV few years ago.
