  • Im seriously considering getting a DS from seeing this;

  • daiquirikiss is KING!!! I just stumbled across your blog and youtube stuff. I am not much of a youtuber... BUT I find your videos to be helpful and unassuming-- DESPITE how cool you sound speaking Japanese! I bought the first two "games" since I have recently acquired a cheap (and pleasantly pink) DS to help me study Kanji.

My plans for Japan I think roughly coincide with yours, so I hope you will keep Youtubing and blogging to tell me all about it. Keep up the good work! -Justin

  • Hi, I don't know if you still check this video, but will this game work on an American DS?

  • @LenntBear like choas says, they're not region locked.

  • I can attest that Kanji Sono Mama is indeed a great, cheaper alternative for any DS owners living in Japan who need to be constantly looking up kanji they can't read. Not sure about people studying the language in their own country, as it's very much designed for Japanese people who need an English dictionary, not vice-versa.

It's cool that it has Game & Watch games hidden in there, and a friend of mine told me it's built in to every Japanese DSi and DSLL.

  • will it work with the DSI XL?

  • on mine dosnt it show up "force" like on yours. is it possibole to change language or something or is it a different type?

  • tanoshi!!!

  • i would suggest that you dye your hair black. you'd look japanse. haha

  • heyy your brief tutorial on kanji sonomama was so good i can actually use it now thanks to you :)

  • Is it possible that I can play on my german nintendo DS those games?

  • yeah, theyre not region locked

  • What's the best way to learn the words? I can read Hiragana and Katakana pretty well and I'm working on Kanji but when I read it I don't understand the actual word. Basically, what's the best way to learn Japanese words if you can read the characters besides looking up in the dictionary every 3 seconds?

  • from the video I saw

    Game 1: no romaji

  • I added your video to my Favorite list. Your video is good and the bonus: you are so beautiful. Wow, dreamgirl.

  • Thnx u very much, i was wondering of getting a denshi jisho or a nintendo ...and of course i wanted with all my heart NINTENDO!, and ..i didnt know if there was any translator for nintendo..this will save my life

thnx very much, you explain wonderfluly

..i hope i get this games on my country ;P

  • 9:18「子」←あれで0点とは、ちょっときびしい採点。

    私なら60点さしあげます。^^

  • Man..I was gonna get a DS Lite that was on sale for $99.And this is one of the reasons I wanted to use it for.But I kept procrastinating..and now the sale is over.Perhaps another time.

  • I have Kanji Sonomama and My Japanese Coach, but I was looking for something more... Now that I know about Kakitori Kun, I might look into it! ^^

    ありがとうございます!(*_>*)

  • I have kakitori, but there's one thing I don't like about it. When you do the excercises with sentences. There'll be a word with hiragana, and occasionally I don't know the word (like how often do you use 田んぼ lol). So it can be difficult to figure out the kanji for it... but besides that I like the game.

  • Hi Miko,

I was wondering if you had any English DS game recommendations. By this I mean, games which are designed for English users to learn Japanese. The reason I ask, is that these games are rather difficult to use for beginners, for the reason that all instructions/buttons are in Japanese.

    Cheers

  • unfortunately i don't know any good ones.. whenever i searched for games I got "My Japanese Coach" I don't know how good it is...

Another one I just found is made for little Japanese kids just learning to write. It's called "Anpanman to Asobo A-I-U-E-O Kyoushitsu" which translates to "Play with Anpanman, A-I-U-E-O Classroom" It's in Japanese but it's really easy to use I bet.

  • My Japanese coach also has a small Japanese dictionary on it. It also has common phrases for for tourists and has sound attached to some of the words to help with pronunciation. The lessons on it are okay, but not great. The games on it are pretty bad. But yea... all the buttons are in English, and you can search for Japanese words by the English word. I think the game here would be more helpful for translating the characters though.

  • hey miko. :]

do you think you could provide us with a link or name of that dictionary you're using on the DS? after watching this, i'm getting a DS purely for that dictionary.. but i don't know what it's called.

thanks a ton. this video helped a LOT, like your others. :]

    happy beginning of spring!

  • sure the link is now in the info box.

    the dictionary is called 漢字そのまま楽引辞典

    かんじ・そのまま・らくびき・じてん

  • arigato

  • no problem!

  • lolz

  • Is Nintendo sponsoring you?

  • no.. I just like their software

  • you rock (: this helped a lot.

  • thanks! Keep watching. I'm always making videos.

  • Ur vid was really helpful.

I was thinking about getting the kakitorikun, but I didn't know, if it can be used with only a little knowledge of japanese.

But I will give it a try now!

Even though there are games for beginners like my japanese coach from ubisoft and mind your language, I don't think they will teach a lot kanji..

But in order to read magazines or txts in video gamez without a decent knowlege of kanji.

Theres no way to be able to read/play a lot without more than hira & kata...

  • What is the dictionary called? Can you reply with a link please? Thanks.

  • this is good info. nice one.

  • Thank you so much for your informational video! I am really glad to see someone has reviewed over the popular Kanji games. I actually own a "Denshi Jisho" (electronic dictionary, and I paid about $200 for it. The dictionary that you showed for the DS, if by far, better than my dictionary in some ways! The writing feature on it would be a MAJOR time saver when looking for kanji. Definately going to purchase it! Once again, thanks for your video and great job!!!

  • wow , thanks for sharing this , and you voice is nice make me sleep ~( its really cool ) i have sensitive hearing

    sorry for my english

    Sayonara! ^-^
