It is a good thing " Vivian Krause' is in to research. Look for her interviews on Youtube. American foundations have payed over $90 million to promote so called wild Alaskan over farmed. Millions of that money went to so-called grassroots protests in western Canada. Why didn't these foundations put any money to enviromental action in the Gulf of Mexico, on the eastren seaboard or the Alaskan coast? American marketing at its best.
The Pacific Salmon Forum PSF - a non-biased scientific body ordered to look into the sea lice issue found that the studies Morton was citing (her own), were incorrect. Co-author Marty Krkosek agreed. Morton and Krkosek were asked to “recalibrate”. She concluded that “the survival of the pink salmon cohort was not statistically different from a reference region without salmon farms.” That’s right – no extinction. Not even a difference.
I took lessons from Alex Morton's writing. I am sure you know her. The US has funded millions to her to discredit farmed salmon and promote wild salmon. aka Alaska salmon. She uses words like "may contribute" as I did in my last post. Problem is.. Many readers will take the comment as fact and not something that could be studied to find the fact. To sound like Morton again. Stop Ranching Alaska and get out. How does it feel?
Alaska chinook salmon are on the endangered species list according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game web site. Horrific overharvest in commercial, recreational, and subsistence fisheries, as well as devastating ((hatchery-produced fish, disease, release)) and other man-made factors such as destructive water diversion, may contribute to the decline of the chinook salmon stock.
At first, environmentalists said farmed salmon contained dangerous levels of cancer-causing PCBs and shouldn’t be consumed by pregnant women – until it turned out that wild salmon (declared safe by Health Canada) has even higher levels of PCBs. Then they warned that escaped salmon would interbreed with wild salmon and produce Frankenfish. The scare that finally stuck was sea lice (even though there’s no good evidence that sea lice are a problem).
UPDATE!!!!! (it's 2010). Now we have record returns of sockeye salmon in British Columbia. Great pink salmon and chinook salmon too.
So, it's clear this "scare" was a trumped up tactic to try to scare the consumer away from a healthy food source - farm-raised salmon. Just shows Morton is wrong. the only thing Morton said that is true, " I dont have a great set of credentials."
Fraser sockeye runs have been declining steadily since the early 1990s along with the increase in salmon farms and farmed production. Gail Shea should be ashamed of this.
@foxshots....Thanks for the info. The sooner these fish farms are shut down the better. You have evidence here that eating farmed salmon is a health hazard. The ravings of schmarly2007 are proof that it causes brain damage.
@hankeraway Eating farmed salmon is actually quite good for your health. The benefits of salmon have widely been documented and farmed salmon have been noted to have FAR less parasites and sicknesses then those that are unkept and in the wild.
For BC wild salmon to survive, there must be a balance. Overfishing, forestry in salmon baring streams, pollution... all these things and more deplete our stocks.
One way to insure the survival of wild salmon is to farm them.
I can see the strings!! Yep, someone is right above the camera controlling you. You are a sheep. Get out of your parents basement and go and visit a farm you puppet.
All you did was read a website that is paid to drive the public away from farmed fish - in order to promote Alaska salmon.
Not enough space for me to pick apart every stupid/inaccurate comment. No "dyes" dummy. Eagles caught in nets? WTF? Shoot and kill any animal? WTF? Starving natives! WTF?
@schmarly2007 I've been farming for over a decade, I have never seen anything in the way of dyes, dead eagles or starving natives. I never touched a gun and have never, and will never shoot an animal in the wild.
@schmarly2007... it's good to have you on our side! Someone has to cut the puppet strings :D

If Alex Morton new her science, she would not have to use circus act mud throwing campaign's to get attention.

Record salmon runs on the coast of BC in 2009. Salmon farms are still up.
I think you are misguided on your "facts" about salmon farms.

@foxshots I posted a link on my comment bar on my YouTube homepage. Just something to shed light on some of the other obstacles wild salmon face.
