Another killer song by the Indigo Girls, with deep and powerful lyrics, great music with interesting nuances, and a powerful message. They are just so good...
I played this song to my mom in November of 1995 to help her understand why I was marrying my now husband. She was concerned our road would not be easy together. It hasn't been easy. But, years and years later, we're still weathering the storms of life and continuously learning to enjoy the ride.
I really like this song; especially now, as I am struggling finding the right thing to do. I dont seem to have the courage that it takes to go this way and instead of being with the one I love I rather play safe and might make a big mistake just because I am too concerned what other people would think. When I told my love that I just cant do it, she asked me to listen to this song.
In response to your previous question - I have heard Emily introduce this song in concert several times and say something to the effect of - "This is for me and my friends".....It is a song, as most of Emily's are - about being world weary, but hopeful.
Would someone be so kind and help me understanding some lines of these lyrics? Please dont laugh at me. English isnt my native language and some metaphors are different in each culture. What is meant by All the old dogs and the magician and But the wood is tired and the wood is old. Thanks a lot.
The "wood"...i believe, is a metephor for life and the friendships and bonds forged in your life that sort of "pull you through" the rough times. As for old dogs and magicians.....Uhhhh, I dunno know - ask Emily....
It's the story of Noah's ark, as seen from the perspective of an animal on board. "Now see we're in the boat in two by twos" gives it away. "Wood" here refers to the wood that the ark is made of. The old dogs are probably Noah's pets (or family, I don't know...) and the Magician I'm guessing, is Noah. If the weather holds, and the flood continues, they would have missed the Point, which is probably Mount Ararat, where the ark ends up. At least that's how I understand the song.
That's the literal meaning if you apply the whole thing to Noah's Ark. I think it makes references to Noah's Ark, as well as the "Old Gospel Ship." But the song is about life's journey not always taking you where you want to go but you learn a lot along the way. If you didn't take these diversions, you'd "miss the point."
I THINK the old dogs and magicians are astrological references (Emily was born in the week of the magician). The wood is life's journey. It's saying that life doesn't always take us where we want to go but if we went straight to where we wanted to go, we wouldn't have learned or experienced anything and will have "missed the point." It's the "life is what happens when you are making other plans" song.
My partner and I went on a Oliva Cruise this past Januany and the main reason we went is because the Indigo Girls are on the cruise.. It was very cool, they hung out like everyone else. There's a clip of their show on my vacation video (on my page)

I love this song. I agree with meredithscott76, I think it has many references--it's the journey not the destination.
