@skinheadfunboy i was 17 years old and listening to wnew in ny . Anxiously awaiting the start of this concert. they then announced the week long concerts at MSG...by the way..i had read that pete came in early intentionally. Something about him being angry at roger...
TT_TT they came to Phili but I was born but I was 26 years late... The fact they came to the city I live right outside of during their Prime but I couldn't see because I wasn't born will haunt me the rest of my life
I saw them in Newcastle (UK) 5 Nov 73. The tapes started slowing so Townshend went berserk, ripped out the tapes, beat up Bob Pridden, kicked John's horn into the orchestra pit, ranted at the audience and strode off stage. The rest of the band looked at each other bewildered then the safety curtain came down. After 20 minutes, we could hear Keith's claves - Magic Bus! We went mad, security were flung into orchestra pit, guitars and drums were smashed. Brilliant. But I never got to see Quad live.
When Pete had his "moment" and left the stage, did you think you'd have to go home without seeing the rest of the show? I know they were all irrascable (sp?), especially Townshend, so if I had been there, I would have thought "That's it - we leave now." It's good they came back on, though.
@5jerry1 I think the audience were as frustrated as the band. We'd been forced to sit, couldn't even sit on the backs of our seats without some usherette flashing a torch in your eyes. We were all as angry as hell and I don't think we would have left without a full-scale riot happening.
There has always been a lot of confusion about the Largo and Philly shows in 1973. King Biscuit did do a radio broadcast of what was supposed to be the Largo show. These locations are actually quite close to each other and without bad traffic they are only 90 minutes apart. I think its quite likely that both shows were officially recorded and the best recording was put on the air. I am not aware of such high quality recordings from other shows on that tour.
Pete has said that he was the band's rhythm player, and John Entwistle, though the bassist, played lead guitar, albeit on bass. Pete's respect for John was unmatched.
I have been lucky enough to see the Who three times in the 107-'s. Once in England and twice in the US. The greatest stage performerrs in the history of Rock, and when Keith was alive, they were the most inspired band creatively and physically. There will never be a band like this one.
I was probably at this show, since I practically lived at the Spectrum in the 1970's and 80's, but it's all a blur now. Shame they're tearing the old girl down.
I attended this show in phila 12/4/73. This was the first concert I ever attended and no other concert ever measured up. I was 15 years old and I still get chills thinking about it. I can't believe how great the sound is no wonder I was blown away.
I had this record when I was a kid,QUADRAPHINIA fuck yah;Seen em live in 89;Im 38 now and a guitar player; I was inspired to play like Pete Townsend; This band is one of the greatest I have ever loved; Thank you boys for all you did; I AM ONE FAN 4 LIFE HOOTS
I only ever got to see The Who review in 1989 in Raleigh NC where Pete plucked away on an acoustic guitar all freakin night(yeah exciting stuff Pete..strum something soothing!) The seats were so off to the left I couldn't see the band on stage. No John on Bass, only the front of a couple of cymbals and no actual drummer, Pete and Roger once in a while when they stepped forward. I would have put a boot up Pete's ass if I could have gotten my hands on him, worst show ever only because of greed.
This is from 12/6/73 in Largo, Md (outside DC). The venue: Capital Centre. I was there. This is not the Philly show (I was there as well). Yes, this was broadcast over King Biscuit late March 1974. If you have the color photo insert in the original Odds & Sods LP, THIS RECORDING is from THAT concert.
this is from Philly. i have the Largo MD show as well and that one has somewhat better quality as well as a few different arrangments. this is from Phillidelphia though. the Who soundboard Recorded both concerts for King biscuit in 73. this also appears on "Tales from the who"
but off that topic, you're a lucky fan to have seen them at those shows
Do you have any footage from the Who in Largo when the Who toured with Kenney Jones in 1980? My friend was onstage sitting by Entwistle and I'd love to catch a glimpse, though I can't imagine how she could handle the Ox's amplifiers so close!
I found this bootleg ( Tales from the Who) in caracas in 1982 It's had incredible sound quality
Back then as a teenager I regreted not having seen them before their farewell tour of 1982
I have seen them three times now (1997,2000,2007) and on Sunday they will come to Philadelphia to play the same night the Phillys are playing the Rays in the world series and the Eagles are playing in the stadium , all that energy within four blocks!! fantastic god bless them.
This is not that rare at all. It comes from the "Tales From The Who" boot which has been around forever. Also, if I'm not mistaken, this show was first recorded for the "King Biscuit Flower Hour" syndicated radio show.
well its pretty rare. "tales from the who" isnt really that easy to find unless your really into looking for bootlegs. its been around forever on vinyl but not on the digital format so at least its rare for people who didnt have who bootlegs or arent huge who fans right? either way the "tales from the who" boot isnt readily available in stores or anything. and the king biscut flower hour doesnt offer this as a CD or anything does it?
One of them, although, I consider my DVD's of the 1970 Tanglewood show and the 1975 Houston show bootlegs in their own right. Both of those are amazing. Still, Tales is a fanastic document of the Quad tour.
Fantatic presetation. Absolutley one of the best rebditions and its still lacking. Nobody will ever knos how momentous this group was in its prime unles one was lucky enough to be there. Drives me to tears.
the're from the philly spectrum. there were no madison square garden gigs except for the 4 that they played in 1974, and those recordings are nowhere near as clean as these
Arf the intro is fucked up, but it's still fuckin great man, I've never heard a version of the real me from '73, it's so rare to hear the hi-hat of moon's drumkit...
yeah. i think considering johns bassline in the song, they thought it would be more important for them to do that instead of brass. theres actually a version of helpless dancer with john on the trumpet somewhere in my collection. i cant remember where though.
@amorrisseyprodromu - Whoa! That's so cool! I didn't see then until 1989 and I was kinda dissapointed.
