You would be surprised.......there are actually two reasons that "there isn't much activity on the amateur bands." One is that you've got a tiny antenna. Secondly, and probably the more important reason is that you've got the global attenuator on.

After watch this video and reading the manual I finally figured out how trunking works. Thank you, flash. What I didn't realized was that the frequencies and the fleet id's from the same system had to be programed into the same bank(s) and dis-able other banks with conventional frequencies/channels.

I just got the pro-197 digital dual trunking police scanner. I did not see this one. They had the pro-96 and pro-97. I did buy the pro 97 but I took it back and got the bad ass 197. Is the 163 digital at all and how much did it cost?

@ryry4217101If you get the cable that plugs into the fuse box of your car (included), you can wire that to a cigarette lighter adapter available at Walmart (no soldering, the thing costs $1.98, sold by 3M). You might notice that the amperage is a little high; this is fine it works great on my PRO-163. You'll have to use a voltmeter to detect continuity of the adapter in the cigarette lighter receptacle to find polarity (+/-). Wire the corresponding wires and secure with a couple of wire nuts.

Yes you can, It actually has a railroad setting, with the most common frequencies already programmed into it.
