@rocksntrees, two main reasons for its popularity here in the late 1800's, the ease with which it can be cut (very soft compared to other native timber) and the beauty of quater sawn logs and planks. That 'sotness' enabled the wood to be used for very delicate fretwork, it was the main timber used for window framing and trims in the older settlers homes.
Great tree! We have these too here in Phoenix (not native of course). I didn't know they were popular for lumber. Keep up the good work!
