Horrible instrument with a total lack of personality. Solo reeds sound the same. Worldwide known as a total failure this organ which purchase could be better directed to restore all the historic organs in France.... the previous instrument located at that glorious buffet was undoubtedely better in quality. Van der Heuvel: Fehler. Guillou is guilty for this capricious dutch creature.
@stylusfantasticus : I remind you that Guillou was the victim of an organ breakdown for 12 years! The previous organ was killed despite efforts by Guillou (not the opposite!). And finally, the great VdH is a wonderful instrument that I invite you to come and hear on the spot: you should change your mind!
And I think you're wrong on the budget for reconstruction of the organ ... It was less expensive than the simple restoration of Notre-Dame (1992)!
Guillou is one of the strangest looking people I have ever seen! A great, unique haircut and piercing eyes - he could almost be Dracula! Great improvisor too ;)
I love Guillou. I've been to hear his recitals at St. Eustache maybe 10 times. And by the time he gets to the end of his performance, I feel like my heart is being shot out of a cannon.
trois 32' sont à la pedalier: le principale basse 32', la contre-bombarde 32' et le contre-trombone 32' (sans considerer la gran quinte de 12' que accouplé avec le contrebbasse de 16' dait un acoustique de 32')
Meh . . I've never been terribly impressed by Guillou's improvisations. About 3 of the 30 or so I've heard over the years strike me as being particularly musically coherent or pleasant to listen to. And I find his performances of organ literature to be poor . .
WOW, a brilliant musician! Although, the console looked uncomfortable as can be, having to really reach to grab those knobs and to get to that top manual. Harumph.
Actuallly this console is a miracle of machanical engineering built in the19th century by one of THE GREATEST ORGANbuildiers the world has ever know---Cavaille-Coll. This instrument is much easier to play than those seen in America in which the Organist is buried in the console and can not be seen by anyone else---a problem if you are conducting a choir or someone is conducting an orchestra with organ. This instrument has two consoles---one more modern and an electrically operated one.
The console and organ are built by VAN DEN HEUVEL, a dutch builder.
As for the two consoles, there is one up on the loft which looks identical. I've heard the only difference is that the one upstairs has barker machines only on the Récit and Grand Orgue.
This organ is not a cavaille-coll and neither are the consoles. Additionally, American consoles aren't all exactly the same, there are wider ones, shorter ones, etc. There isn't one exact standard.
J'aime beaucoup cette vidéo et l'impro de notre grand maitre. J(ai moi-meme écrit une modeste version de cette vielle chanson française et je serais heureux de la partager avec vous.
I really enjoy this vidéo. I have also composed a piece based on this old french song. I hope you will like it too.
I love the resources this organ has to offer. Shame he didn't demonstrate the Trompette en Chamade! The tutti is mind-blowing-so is the 32 foot Bombarde!
He did demonstrate the Trompette en Chamade I-III ranks. This was done at 03:23 after he says "une autre trompette..." He plays it on the fifth manual -the Solo division. You might be thinking of the Trompeteria II stop also on the Solo which is essentially a mixture that adds a Trompette at 2'and 4' in the bass, then 4' and 16' in the mid-range, then 16' and 32' in the treble... I believe this stop was used in the Tutti! I agree with you! The organ is mind-blowing!! Cheers!
Thanks for the reply AndrewJirele! If you go onto the Van den Heuvel website, you can find some excellent pieces played on the organ at St. Eustache (I really want to play there and meet Jean Guillou one day)!
Oh, and make sure you get a copy of Jean Guillou's CD with the Rachmaninov Trois Danses Symphonique. Here, he plays the St. Eustache organ with Yanka Hekimova in a simply magnificent and ingeniously rehearsed performance. I think that all three dances use every stop on the organ by the end of it all- it's amazing!
Certainly, ONE of the greatest anyway. Up until seeing this I didn't care much for his playing. He's a genius and people that brilliant just plain intimidate me.

I am glad that he waited till the last part of the improv to use any mixtures. I dislike the sound of mixtures. Too shrill sounding,
The rankette sounded cool.... Reminded me of the sound of a Godfried Kinura on 10" of wind.
