the thing is, i dont think that zappa went around acting like a self-centered, cynical asshole. he obviously has made friends (hendrix being one of them) and i think the point here, is to not expect what someone else has. its almost a declaration of humility. make friends, laugh, and play but dont have any sort of expectation from people or life. that way, you dont set yourself up for dissapointment

It sounds to me like Zappa is paraphasing a quote of the writer Gertrude Stein back in the early 1920s. Stein was talking about the difference between Europe and America. According to Stein, Europe had mr. Zappa's. Stein wrote, "The difference between Europe and America is that in Europe everyone greets you with a straight face and only smiles when you do something good. In America, everyone greets you with a smile then must frown when you do something bad." Zappa is European.

awesome.. what a useless, nihilistic and premature philosophy.
this view on humanity leads to nothing but self centeredness or some crazy shooting spree in your high school.
of course the powerful impose apathy upon us and wants to turn us into mindless consumers.
this does not mean however that there arent a lot of ordinary (and maybe somewhat deceived people) outthere who have strong opinions about whats happening in the world and actually want to see sth better than the status quo.
i mean all positive changes have happened because of movements and sometimes really popular movements.
you need to fight the war against apathy and deceit but if you assume that everyone is an asshole your just a traumatized person. i used to think like like this when i was in highschool because a lot of people in my school were fucking assholes but i know that there are a lot of people out there who are sympathetic. cmon get real.
@barun432 Mr. America called to say that you don't have to thank him for the fact that you weren't made to speak Japanese, German, or Russian when you were a baby.
@barun432 Mr. America called to say that you don't have to thank him for the fact that you weren't made to speak Japanese, German, or Russian when you were a baby.
@khoroshoorange ''and the minute they do something nice, it's a pleasure''. I know there maybe some people who are sympathetic, but what you are saying is plain PATHETIC. In a system where people mainly just don't give a fuck about changing, where all they want is a phone that'll rub their balls and where media ejaculates.. Cmon YOU get real. If you want to change things, go ahead and try to be like Immortal Technique. But if you wanna just LIVE your life in THIS world, FZ's words are for you.
@khoroshoorange i can dig on that one. well put. whats wrong with lying somewhere in the middle? how about this philosophy: Pay attention, and trust those who you deem trustworthy by using your own brain and experience.
@poobumm78 and expect something realistic to happen, but be open to possibilities and opportunities. i choose the path slightly more optimistic but not too much more.
@khoroshoorange In a modern society this philosophy works for a few who want to follow it and for those who don't want to that's their own choice but this philosophy leading to a shooting spree is just plain stupid. FZ talked about anti stupidity all his life and he was always against the status quo which is why he was excluded from radio and considered crazy and weird by the mainstream media whereas in real life he was the most sane in an industry and world full of plastic people.
@khoroshoorange lol your mind is narrow and missing his point, you probably had a hard time not mentioning conspiracies and propaganda bout world orders and free masons harps and shit, fuckin tard.
(i bet your mom cuts the crust off your sandwitches)
"I hear the sound of marching feet, down Sunset Blvd. to Crescent Heights, and there at Pandoras' Box, we are confronted by a mass quantity of, ... plastic people".
@duartefilnetcabo Frank talked about the concept of a "rock star" as pathetic and even if it existed it didn't apply to him, the media highlights any artist from that era as a "rockstar".He was a composer who also happened to be a guitarist, and the philosophy he shares here is very much in-tuned with XX n XXI century society. And you talk about reality, have the balls to listen to his social commentary, music repertoire and interviews and you'll understand where in "reality" he exists.
@barun432 Right on man, Frank is someone that I always looked up to. Much of my personality was sculpted by his music and his way of thinking. Sure a lot of people think he's an asshole, but those are the people that have no chance of ever understanding concepts that are deeper than a puddle.
@duartefilnetcabo And you're a fuckin' republican sonofabitch, kinda redneck that don't understand nothing except voting Bush ! Bloody bastards (and moron yourself), but who cares 'bout you ? Who gives a fuck anyway ???
I like this guy. Authenticity at the expense of social adornment. No time for bullshit.
I also happen to think you can be this hard on yourself, while having a lot of outward patience and tolerance for people. Just thinking people are hypocrites doesn't make you less of a hypocrite or better than anyone. That was always Zappa's shortcoming - a kind of vanity.
fck thats my philosophy aswell.... i try to never expect..just do what i have to do..something good happens..good for me..if u think people are assholes..then ull never be disapointed...it applies to women...men who treat women like sex objects..always get to f em in the end...ull never get a chick if u treat her like something special...ull always suffer in the end.

Con esa actitud se evitan muchas decepciones, y todo el que sea decente será una grata sorpresa. Pero uno no debe pensar que la gente es buena, siempre te van a decepcionar. Si no esperás nada, entonces no te importa! No esperes amigos, diversión, ni una buena vida, no esperes nada! Y si al final algo de eso te llega, será un bonus."
Keep in mind Frank knew a lot of hippies. Hippies were the bottom of humanity. I know I lived and traveled with them for 6 years in the 1970s - all over the USA and Canada, music festivals and all. Hippies were macho, violent, stupid, racist, sexist, terrible parents, drug abusers, not-funny, obnoxious, unfriendly and obsessed with the hippie status quo.
Does it came in anybody's mind these words could, before any kind of humor, mean FREEDOM? As I see, this guy, 30 years later and in 30 seconds, shows us he's still in advance on the world...
@uglykidlance According to me, he was neither unhappy or hyperbole..he was speaking about matters no body wanted to touch and told it like it is, rather than painting rosy pictures.
Earlier I mentioned that one needs to hear his music and social commentary in songs to get what he is...
@uglykidlance Actually, according to very close friends, Zappa was an incredibly positive person...he just wasn't full of crap about how you should behave, who you should trust, why you should think exactly the way that he did. Just because he challenged our illusions about human nature didn't mean that he lived a joyless life. Quite the opposite, from all accounts.
@uglykidlance he was a total realist. and his words as i understand them, will keep you from disappointment, but will also allow you to take people as they are and totally be surprised by the good you find in them.
@uglykidlance Frank was a guy who was the compelete opposite of what that generation of musicians and performers stood for, he was anti-stupidity, uncompromising as a person, musician and composer, a workoholic. who wanted to hear what his compositions sounded like and he hired musicians throughout his lifetime to do that, which covered almost all the genres known to man and if anybody got it, that was great and for the ones who didn't understand it, that was OK as well as they were not meant to
@uglykidlance I don't read it as being unhappy, simply as acknowledging the unpleasant reality of the human condition. I think he was wise enough to not allow that awareness to ruin the rest of his life. Also, his music suggests a fundamentally happy personality to me, but that's subjective. And, he did give A LOT of interviews, since it was some of the only publicity he could get, so he was often repeating himself to dense interviewers asking stupid questions, which negatively colors the tone

oh and movements from the sixties did affect the status quo.
like the anti war movement.
i think the majority has made progress concerning war issues.
the iraq war and the war in afghanistan showed that.
you know sometimes when the media tells you what the public thinks you better not believe it.
