Unfortunately it's not so easy to fake a kernel panic on Mac OS X (yes, they can crash, I'll admit it as a Mac/PC/Linux user). Kernel panics in Mac OS X will impose a restart notice over your current workspace (Google Images has a few good examples), so unless this device can take a snapshot of the user's screen and perform alpha composition for the restart notice, it won't be convincing.
The IR trigger is not always perfect but it really cheap and easy to do. A little RF module PCB that you could stack on top would made that thing much more fun! You could be in the hall or other room and activated it.
I guest you can make a little ASCII animation with the propeller. That could be priceless with that art you have there! HAHA
Joe I Saw your and Bre Pettis' videos a long time ago and think it's awesome that you're on the Discovery channel. It's great have a semi "Behind the scenes" look at what you guys do.

Proper usage of an EECS degree :-p. Also would be a very nerdy way to propose to a nerdy girlfriend (with an appropriate picture of course).

I can see some real fun with a Mac user, all self assured he'll never see a BSOD.

Omg, I would pay $200 for one of these. I could make one, but I am too lazy lol.

GODLIKE!
Would be much better if it was RF rather than IR, IR can be such a pain in the ass... even if it is easier.

This was filmed at the Prototype This warehouse on Treasure Island in San Francisco.
The BSODomizer was created by Joe Grand aka Kingpin (me) and Zoz Brooks, two hosts of the show. The victim is Mike North, one of the other hosts.
I still feel bad about this, but it was so worth it :)
