  • "A gardener should never forget

to sow dry and set wet."

    45 deg in May?? OMG.

Carly! Martha Stewart! Oh, lol ....

  • You ever save seeds of the veggies you like? I've done it for years. I'm planting third generation habaneros this year (Hot? HALF of one teeny 1/2 inch pepper will make a huge pot of beans FIERY!) You have to sow more seeds because some won't "take", and I think they have to be "heirloom" to begin with. On the other hand, I've grown potatoes from classy organic starts to Safeway russets and gotten good returns. Tomatoes, lettuce, arugula, pumpkin, all from saved seeds.

  • No I never save seeds to plant. I did try it once with this one huge okra plant but the seeds never sprouted. I do know with tomatoes the seeds have to be from heirloom plants and not hybrid plants. All the tomatoes I plant are from hybrid plants because they have better disease resistance and I have problem enough with tomato diseases. The plants are very cheap at at nearby greenhouse too so planting seeds just seems like a lot of extra effort.

  • Hi mate great to watch a long vlog from you, I enjoyed this and now I know how to plant tomato and pepper plants.

    James

    Robert your still the best.

  • Thanks James! It really did seem to make a positive difference this year repotting the tomatoes and giving them a chance to grow a little bigger before setting them out in the cold ground.

  • ahh ok , that would explain the wide sprawing on the roots when you unpottted them. thanks for the reply and good luck with the garden this year !

  • I'm enjoying watching the garden progerss , I'll post an update to my tomatoes in a day or so also . did you know you can plant the tomatoe up to the top few leaves and the stem will grow roots? it will really make a difference

  • Thanks for watching stymye. Yep, I knew that about the tomato planting depth. I originally got these tomatoes at a greenhouse and repotted them with that method of pinching off the lower limbs and planting them deeply within the pots. When I took them out of the pots here and set them into the garden I didn't do that again because it seemed like they already had a plenty good enough root system and they were stocky enough plants to where the wind wasn't going to blow them around too much.

  • for some reason I'm watching your garden vlogs backwards...I don't think I caught them as you uploaded.

Ahhh cats. We've recently taken on 3 more kittens, so that's 5 at our hours. Two of mine look like Carly and Susie, 'cept they're Maks and Buddy (boys). We just got Dandy (girl, orange tabby) and Prince and Isabel (rescued from a box left in an intersection! boy and girl, grey tabbys, 5 weeks old now.)

  • I enjoyed this video very much..I planted lots of tomatoes and pepper last spring and now I got to eat them everyday..unfortunately..hahaha

  • So you mean you canned or froze them? I'll hopefully be doing another update in a few days when my okra comes up.

  • Peppers hmm hmmmm - Always nice to get those right off the plant and fresh! Love the yellow bells too. Nice dark soil for thoe tomatoes! Thanks for vloggin it Blink!

  • I was very pleased with how that soil looked. The darkeness of it will absorb the sun's heat and hopefully make my tomatoes grow faster. When I was at Wal-Mart the other day there wasn't a single bag of that exact same stuff left, so it's pretty popular.

  • cool!! I'm gonna put my hanging tomatoes outside on the trellis I rebuilt today!!

  • hello....i enjoyed this one too... pity there will be no long garden vlogs anymore... just plant some more.... how about onions :-) i will keep my fingers crossed that your garden turns out the way you want... bye

  • Well, I will be doing occasional updates showing the progress of everything. I'll be planting some okra in a couple of weeks but I'll wait to post that video after the plants are growing a bit.

  • Okay, this is random. But your videos make me wish I was a morning person. I love mornings. Love the light in mornings. HATE getting up early. Maybe if I could stay up until noon and then sleep... my god I am strange.

    I want some tomatoes! =(

  • Ahhh, BUT I've filmed all of my garden vids in the afternoon:) That was the late afternoon sun which was in my eyes. I'm not a morning person either!!! Getting up early literally *is* for the birds. Let them have the worms, LOL.

  • And I want some tomatoes too. It's going to be a couple of months though:( I can give you some cyber tomatoes now though. Those are always in season, LOL.

  • Haha, yay, cyber tomatoes! And wow, I guess this means I don't have to become a morning person after all, huh? Just go outside in the late afternoon and pretend it's morning.

  • Yep, it's what works for me:) If you'll notice, the lighting is usually brighter in the first part of my garden vids than the last part. And nothing tastes quite like byteing into a cyber tomato!!!

  • caz was here :)

  • Hiya Caz!!!

  • what a beautifull day for the garden,i always grew moneymaker tomatoes, love and respect scotty and libby:0)

  • I planted "Park's Whopper" to start with but they died. When I went back to the greenhouse "Mountain Pride" was about all they had left. I'll probably try a couple of different varieties next year.

  • my hot peppers are doing great this year.

  • Congrats on the good crop Samfisha!!! I expect mine will do pretty well. This area seems well suited to peppers. I've always had good luck with them.

  • just stopping to say hi

    i've been working.

so nice to see u setting out in the garden

  • Hi there Charlie! It's nice to see you:)Haven't seen you around in a while!

  • Screwing Martha Stewart and Butt Sniffing!!!

Life doesn't get much better than that!!!! LOL!!!!

  • Life is good, LOL. After screwing Martha Stewart I had to wash off my feet so I guess I went in a little deeper than what I planned on:)))

  • LMAO!!!!!

  • You've inspired me to plant patio tomatoes.

  • Yayyy, it's always nice when I can inspire people to do more productive things than play with mousetraps. Of course that's productive in it's own way as well, LOL.

  • I thought I had commented but can't see it but then at the moment the comments are so messed up that if I said I had and hadn't I could have got away with it - darn now I have admitted it! Anyways we took a chance and planted some pepper seeds afet wea ate some chillis and stuff an dthey are coming up - amazing! Trouble is I didn't label them so I haven't a clue which are the hot ones and which are mild but I guess there is one way to find out when the time comes!

  • When they start producing you can brew up some noodles to go with them and make some homemade Bombay Pot Noodle, LOL. So you planted seed from the pepper pods which you ate? If those peppers were the product of a hybrid plant then the peppers produced by the seed from them may not produce the same type of peppers as the ones you ate. At least that's the way it works with tomatoes unless they're *heirloom* tomatoes. I don't know if most peppers are hybrids or not though.

  • Oh heck now you have confused me - I will have to "wait" and see as my grandfad always said to do!

  • HELP, I got aphids in my garden and dont want to use any pesticides. Will a mild soap solution work on them or do I need to find some ladybugs somewhere?

"Time to screw Martha Stewart"...Im not touchin that.

    D

  • I'm afraid your going to have to Google it because I've never had any aphids in my garden before for me to have to deal with them. Mild soap might work though. I know some people use it for various things. The only insect/pest control method I've ever used is just manually picking bugs off my plants and squishing them. I know you can't do that with aphids though because there too small and numerous. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Ladybugs would probably work if you could find them somewhere.

  • I will start with the mild soap solution and see what happens. Thanks anyway and have fun with Martha!

    D

  • I had to put a new gasket on Martha. She was leaking, LOL.

  • I heard that happens when they get old....

  • Now, to watch the garden grow. I like - Carley doesn't play well with others. :)

  • WooHoo, nothing like taking a break and watching things grow after all that hard work!!! Carly seemed to be in a bad mood after that butt sniff, LOL.

  • great vid blink.

  • Thanks Stu! Now see, I've had tons of cats in my garden and it's looking very nice, LOL.

  • super

  • duper!!! :)

  • Planting time! Isn't it a good feeling to get all those plants in the ground ~ have fun watching your garden grow!

  • Even though I enjoy gardening, YES it's always a great feeling when I finally get everything planted!!! It really is a lot of work and this year I've spent more time editin the videos than I have planting, LOL.

  • What a dedicated..)sweet caring) gardener you are...Sounds as if you HAVE DONE IT FOR MANY YEARS...THE VOICE OF EXPERIENCE...I wish you a "bumper crop this year!!! :-)

  • Thanks Beeke!!! I've done it for a *LOT* of years, LOL. I've always suspected I put in more effort per the amount of yield that I get than many of the more efficient gardeners out there. I'm sure there's lots easier way to do things in the garden than I do but it's good exercise, and good eating:)))

  • Your gunna have hot hole when you get to eating those, LOL!

  • I give most of them to my dad:) I don't know how he stands eating so many of them. I can handle the Bells and a light amount of the rest.

  • I have really enjoyed watching your garden vlog. I used to garden every year before my back got to bad to do it. I still love seeing veggies growing and there is nothing better to eat than fresh picked. I love fresh green beans, sliced tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers oh and last but not least a nice pan of corn bread. To me that is a meal. I look forward to it every summer. Now I just have to go to the farmers market insted of growing my veggies.

  • Thanks Debbie!!! I probably eat too much junk food for most of the year but at least for a few months during the summer I eat a ton of healthy veggies, so I'm sure that's better than a full 12 months of bad eating habits, LOL. I'm *really* hoping my okra (which I won't be planting for a couple more weeks) does well because I think I love it better than just about any other vegetable. I've got some back troubles to. Sometimes it actually feels better after physical Cont.

  • activity such as working in the garden and sometimes it feels worse. The main key is not to do *too* much in one day but sometimes I of couse overdo it. Bad backs are the pits:(

  • You totally inspire me!!!

  • Thanks Jenn:))) Sometimes my garden

    per-spires me, LOL.

  • I peel the peat pots off too. I'll trade you one green pepper plant for one of those yellow ones. We are trying so hard to get our two gardens planted between baseball games. I'll keep in touch with you to see how your garden is growing.

  • Are any bell pepper plants actually green bells? I mean don't they all turn from green to *some* other color late in the season? They all start off as green even if they're named yellow or red or purple bell but they all turn another color by late summer I'd think. Good luck with your garden!!!

  • All those hot peppers! So that's the secret to your spiciness :O)

  • All of them are hot peppers except the bell peppers. The "Tam Jalepenos" are supposed to be mild but the last ones I planted weren't as advertised and a little too hot for me. Although I do eat some of the hot ones, a little goes a long way with me and I give a lot of them to my dad.

  • WOW! You sure are a great gardener!!

I got a lot of tips from this video.

    Hugs~Nancy

  • Thanks Nancy! It's said that the best thing for a garden is the gardener's shadow:) I make a few mistakes and often see things that are obvious in hindsight that I should have done differently but really I think that most people can garden pretty well if they put a little time and energy into it. (((HUGS)))

  • You are in your element. You have a glow about you that only comes from enjoying what you're doing. You bring a smile to my face. I'd love to have so much land. Send me some of the fruits of your labor. A juicy 'mater hot off the vine mmmm. Kitty is keeping guard(en).

  • Some juicy cyber tomatoes are headed your way. It's too bad that bytes aren't as tasty as bites though, LOL.

  • You can byte me anytime :O)

  • LOL

  • Hey, what does having wood chips in the soil do? And was it really as dark as it looked on camera here?

LOL @ Carly telling Suzy where to stick it at the end!!! I guess a little bit of butt-sniffing goes a long way, huh?

  • Basically almost *any* organic matter which is added to the soil is a good thing. Supposedly if you add enough organic matter it *eventually* makes your soil looser and therefore much more easy to work with. I've added bunches of organic matter to mine through the years. It's better than in the beginning but still has a *long* way to go because it still crusts over all too easily. Pluse when the organic matter breaks down it makes the soil more fertile. Yep, it really was that dark. I was, Cont.

  • surprised at how dark it was myself. I was glad it was that dark because it will absorb the heat of the sun better. Carly probably only hisses at Suzy once every couple of days, so it was unusual to catch it on camera like that. They get along lots better than Carly and Babs.

  • Love the cages; You're givin' me ideas!

PS.. bell peppers; 2 bucks a piece in the grocery in southwest Ohio

  • Wow, 2 bucks a piece is really high. Actually I've not checked them here lately so they might be that high here too. I do know that I have on occasion seen the red and yellow bells priced 3 to 4 times as much as the green ones before however

  • B... yeah.. I do the shopping for mom too and well, she wanted one or two.. I bought her frozen recipe starter ones (cut up already). I refuse to buy them at that price. I planted one pepper plant so far but waiting to plant more. It's been rainy here. Lots of freezing gonna happen this fall.

  • I got my drink, ready to watch LOL...

  • Drink?? PFFT! I got ice cream with chocolate magic shell, yo!

  • *burp* well, Phyllis and I just came back from dinner not so long ago and still stuff. But, I am still going to call you a brat and huff away ... BRAT... *stomping off*

  • Sounds yummy!!! I still need to try some of that magic shell stuff one of these days. This is an 18 minute video, (ya, I always cheat and don't count the 58 seconds as a minute, LOL) so you might as well skip the bowl and eat the whole half gallon out of the carton!

  • YUMMY! Share?

  • Oh man, I'm afraid it's going to take more than one drink to make it through an 18 minute video. You're going to be hammered by the time you finish this, LOL. Oh well, at least it's Friday and you can sleep the hangover off tomorrow!!!

  • No alcohol here but it is a diet soda.. Livin' it large on a Friday night :0)
