I had a similar idea years ago, but, unfortunately,it involved electrodes instead of candle lights, so I never pursued it. I must admit, his version is a lot more humane ;)

can't resist being a know-all for a microsecond. a mellotron technically does what you describe at the start, with not nearly as amusing results!!!
