actually your wrong you should only use the 2 and 4th combination because the b natural tends to be alot sharper and its easier to tune the c then it is to tune the b natural. this tends to be the problem with most people. keep using 1 and 3 but remember to tune it.
If the 4th valve wasn't there for a reason they wouldn't have put it there its used for lower register notes but also works well for any register. Even playing a C tuba I tune on Bflat because its rare you play with a group who tunes to a C
Damn!! okay thats why you tune the C so it isnt sharp... and you cant tune both the b natural and c with the 4th valve becuase if you tune one the other is out of tune so thats why you only tune the B natural.. 123 is alot harder to tune than a C 1-3.. point is you can only use the 4th valve for B natural.. it also depends on the tuba.. if you can get to the 4th slide easily to tune the B natural then use it for C and when a B natural comes up just pull out ... many factors play into this debate
nice playing bro. I played tuba for about 4 or 5 years, and the last year our band got a rotary 4 valve tuba. I never could get myself to hit 4 instead of 1 and 3.
Actually, the tuba in the video has five valves and is pitched in F. The fourth and fifth valves are used for alternate fingerings in the lower register to improve the pitch. If your Bb tuba had a fourth valve then you can could play low C with the fourth valve instead of 1 and 3. B could could be played 2 and 4 instead of 1, 2 and 3. Basically, the fourth valve is attached to a longer tubing so pitch can be lowered. Hope that helps and good luck with the tuba.
also if you were wondering why they look different than yours its because that tuba has tiggers instead of valves, like yours has. the tiggers are alot like the french honr triggers and basically works the same as valves, just different layout.
You ain't a Sergeant yet???? Drop and give me twenty-five!!! Glad to hear you're doing great things over in Europe. Maybe we'll get to play in a section someday. -SFC G.
It is an old tuba. About ten years ago I used a Brillo pad to take off the lacquer, which was already fading away. I was going for an old school or frosted brass look.
this video never plays for me

Sound isn't bad. It just aint funky. Too busy. Don't feel good. When you are playing tuba you gotta try real hard not to sound like a white boy.

Sorry, you're director's wrong. You have to use 4th valve for C and low F (on a BBb tuba) because the 1-3 combination is very sharp.
tubaguybh 3 years ago
ohh what about the tubas with only 3?
logohi212 3 years ago

I think I'll stick with valves, don't ask me why thought, they just look cool, and plus the school I attend has no triggered tubas =p
so unless i feel like spending i'd say over $2000(not good at estamating prices of instruments), I have no choice but to play valves
