Well this is debatable. If a square root sign is drawn then I would agree that only the positive root is implied (but not necessarily!) but as this question uses power notation one could argue that +/- is implied. In all honesty, most times the examiner is none to bothered!!

is the answer to part a not just 4 it can't be negative can because i thought the definition of the square root sign was take the positive root
