  • I have to agree with everyone who says that it's such a shame country n bluegrass doesn't have voices like this anymore. No plain honest folks behind the ones that are out right now either. Not in new country anyway. All the new artists seem fake to me and I'm 29. Makes me sad. Thanks for posting this

  • @Johnnyfan1982 have you heard of a sister's duo called First Aid Kit?

  • I get so upset when I think that we can't hear songs like this on the radio anymore. What harmonizing...........they were the best

  • @simonne234 Couldn't agree more

  • Nobody harmonizes like this any more...such a shame

  • Awsome

  • excellent voice...nothing from modern times really compares

  • A lot of folks don't realize how special this perfect harmony is, it's a gift.

  • beautiful song

  • Fantastic! Only brothers can do close harmony like this. The Louvins, The McReynolds, The Everlys...

  • " Harmony is the ultimate love ", Phil Everly Thanks For Sharing ERIK TIELMAN, FLORIDADADAA

  • Ray Charles, covered this and he takes this song to whole new level

  • best harmony ever!

  • Saw Jesse play at the Ryman Saturday night, and his band included 3 of his grandchildren. Wonderful to see, and he's still sounding great.

  • Beautiful!

  • Back when music had heart.Sad that most of today's music has no heart.Plastic!

  • @vrghiks --

So right! This cut is pure soul. They don't make 'em like Jim and Jesse anymore. Fantastic clip -- what a treasure.

  • supreme

  • supreme

  • one person slipped when hitting the like button

  • when the brother sings in high key dam it sounds sooooo good!

  • i wonder if they were influenced by groups like the louvin brothers?

  • @buckbuck666 They did a tribute album to the louvin brothers in 1969. This song is on it.

  • No one would even know how to begin to harmonize like this nowadays!

  • This song should have been 20 minutes long

  • @jamescaptainfarrell

    that's about right

  • this is pure clean home-spun and wonderfully angelic it doesn't matter what your preference is today or tomorrow passion is passion and songs that provoke your emotions are what escapism is about, isn't ok shut up and roll a fatty 'n let's listen to some tunes. blindlemonrooster

  • The Louvin Brothers did the original didn't they?

  • @lordkoos yup, this was written by charlie and ira louvin. This is the Louvin Brothers' first hit.

  • This song is so awesome.

  • What a great song!

chinesecresteddoll, when does Jessie play, would love to stop in and listen.

  • @bluegrassthumper43

You can go to their website. I have tried to reply to you many times, but YouTube won't let me enter the website. Thanks!

  • Jim & Jesse recorded the best version of "Ballad of Thunder Road." Could someone post it

  • I am Jesse McReynolds sister in law, and I am delighted to write that Jesse is still performing live at his home in Gallatin, Tennessee, at the beautiful Pick Inn and frequently on the Grand Ole Opry Live. He sings this very song, though Jim passed away some ten years ago. Thank you for the posting.

  • @chinesecresteddoll Thanks for that info..

  • @briartlaw

Thank you for liking Jesse (and Jim)!

  • @chinesecresteddoll T he plessure is all mine it,s the best that there is ..

  • #1 Bluegrass band there ever was / is / will be !!! Jim and Jesse!

  • Just the best bluegrass to my way of thinking . greatest singers of the time then and now..

  • Jim McReynolds had the clearest, most effortless tenor voice in bluegrass. He died too young.

  • @banjoist123 Thats the truth for sure..

  • Suc beautiful....harmony...

  • I've listened to it 20 times in a row and I still haven't had enough!

  • Some of the greatest Bluegrass harmony EVER!!!

  • I love Jim & Jesse! I really love Jim's voice, it's so high! I love Jesse's Mandolin playing too!!!

  • flawless jim and jesse thx immortal harmony =)

  • Wow...just lost my gal, and it took exactly till the end of the initial verse for the first teardrop to fall. Well performed music can make the hair stand up on one's neck, or bring a person to tears. Amazing.

  • to take a line from Oh Brother....." an old time hahmony numbah....with a guitar accomp....accomp...guitar player!"

  • This is the stuff Bluegrass is built on. This song was on the first Bluegrass album I bought and was one of the first examples of Bluegrass I ever heard. Unbeatable!

  • Beautiful example of why modern country sucks so much. Jim and Jessie kept it simple but perfect.

  • you couldnt have said it better.

  • Amen ruttlemaniac!

  • Too bad Jim never married and had kids. The bluegrass world sure could have used a voice like that to be passed on.

  • Jim was married and has a daughter, Janine.

  • @ebsprouse Really? Thanks for the heads up! That's very nice to know.

  • this can not be beat!!!!!!!

  • Ditto!

  • we also went to Sunset Park (check out the YouTube video of Bill Monroe at Sunset, it made me cry)....I miss those Sunday concerts very much!

  • BEAUTIFUL family harmony here... have seen Jim and Jesse a few times MANY years ago at Sunset Park in West Grove, PA... brings back nice memories of good music, family togetherness, simple times... miss that.

  • One of the best groups ever in any kind of music you sure dont hear anything this good in todays music Jim you are missed

  • This is one of the best versions of this song ever recorded. I love Jesse's mandolin playing -- so sensitive and heartfelt. And the way they switch lead/harmony to get the sound just right. Wonderful.

Love to you Jesse, and Jim, you are sorely missed.

  • You could not have put it any better and thats the truth..

  • AS GOOD AS IT POSSIBLY GETS !

  • You said it right bowanbill true country music heros really

  • Some of the best duet singing in Bluegrass music.

Plus the lyrics contain a lot of power..

  • I agree 100% love it .

  • Just lovely..none better..

  • I just love this song: I happened on it trying to find some real country bluegrass instead of the junk we have today: I need my country music heros like Jim and Jesse

  • who are jim and jesse plz never heard of them but theyre very good

  • I miss Keith McReynolds, a personal friend of mine who died way too young :(

  • What happened to Keith?

  • Keith contracted MS quite late in life and had a really tough time with it. When I last saw him in the early 90's he was in a wheelchair. He was a personal friend of mine and it was so sad to see him that way. He's gone on to a much better place now.

  • That is one of the best duets I've ever heard.

Wish Allen Shelton had been on the banjo though.

  • Awesome; thanks for posting it; now can learn it too!

  • To the uploader: Is there any other footage available from this show? It seems to have been professionally taped...maybe a TV broadcast...

  • I love this song. Jim and Jesse are perfection in every thing they sing and play. Jesse with what Ricky Skaggs and Bills Monroe calls that "high lonesome" sound - (harmony here) always gives me goosebumps when I hear him. He and Jesse came to our town about 25 years ago and had a packed house. Didn't Jesse pass away a few years ago? Thanks for this video. - Paula

  • Jim sang high harmony and he passed away in 2002.

  • done charlie and ira proud congrats !

  • Brings a tear to your eyes...

  • This is so wonderful. They just don't make music like this anymore. :'((

  • @FiddlinMiss27 this is sooo true...i hear these songs and make me think of my dad, and brother Hector singin them...

  • @FiddlinMiss27 no shit

  • luv it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I love this song written by the Louvin Brothers.I'd only change one word of the song.Instead of "When I stop DREAMING.." I'd sing "When I stop breathing thats when I'll stop wanting you".

  • uh... that's exactly what it means. stop dreaming, you're dead... see?

  • Death is but an illusion

  • 0 i see now thx lol

  • Meant to vote 10+

  • I saw them when I was a little kid. It was very sad, actually -- this was in the early 80s, and it was at a state fair in Louisiana. Noone had any idea who they were. People were shouting requests at them.

"Play 'Take Me Home, Country Roads.' Play 'Red River Valley.'"

I don't know -- maybe their fame has increased slightly.

  • Beautiful performance.

  • beautiful. love Jim and Jesse. thank you for posting this

  • We miss Jim McReynolds. Surely one of the best duos ever!

  • My god how I miss Jim. Thank you for posting this treasure.

  • There is no harmony like country harmony. Country singers taught the world how it was done. Even the Beatles learned from the Everlys who learned from Ira & Charlie who learned from the Delmores, and you know the rest. Jim & Jesse were just beautiful and among the very, very best. God bless southern music.

  • some how you do not hear harmony like this anymore. This double J combo were some of the greatest bluegrass entertainers from the past

  • Funny you should post this. I was talking with my parents ( both in their late 70's) about this just a few days ago. You're absolutely right. Nobody sings harmony like this anymore and people think of it a "old" or "dated". That's what makes it great...Solid heartfelt music.!!!

  • @mosrite60

I call myself lucky to have had the rare opportunity to see live twice, once it was at the old Ryman Auditorium. Best harmony ever.

  • @PeterNGloor....... oh yes certainly. Bluegrass today has many super pickers but none can ever compare the harmonies of J&J combo. RIP

  • now that's harmony. spice girls and boy bands eat yer heart out

  • Hope this stays on forever--i have to hear it at least every couple of days

  • Jim & Jesse epitomize the essence of bluegrass music.... none better ...no way... no how...

  • i'll never "stop dreaming" as long as i can hear such beautiful music. awesome!

  • This song makes me sad, I don't know if it's the words or the harmony singing, or maybe both..

There is a warm feelin' anyhow 5*'s..Randy

  • probably the best video on all of you tube rock on guys the greatest

  • it's sad to think that this is almost completely lost as an artform. this is the way country is supposed to be.

  • Beautiful. Thanks for posting. Makes it painfully clear what we miss here in little old NZ! Was this off some TV show or live?

    Cheers.

  • That's the "heart of country music" right there!

    THAT kind of singing!

  • I got to spend a few hours with Jesse back stage at the Opry house back in 1987... My God! what a nice guy! He and Brother Oswald treated me like family and we spent the night in the bluegrass dressing room (#2, Mr. Acuff had #1) and had the night of my life! Jim will be sorely missed.

  • they missed the last verse but who cares they come closer to ira and charlies version than anyone harmony and so much more heartfelt all the way fine fine singing we miss you jim

  • kool song eh bubb a ^ ^ III)(*&^

  • ah memories
