I feel sorry for Merlene because she was cheated out so many times not by these instances but more so to do with competing against drug cheats. However the Jamaican's are making up for it now with Usain and even the women sprinters, I guess the Americans are going to have to find some new drugs to win

Ottey took this one fair and square she is almost an entire body length ahead of devers. But thats LIFE! She has been cheated so many times out of her gold medals its not even funny... even by the tip of Gail Dever's nails. Ottey tested positive 3 times in 1999. When the new of her second positive test was released at the World Championships in Spain -she fled. On July5,1999 at Luceren,Switerland both her A & B samples test positive for nandrolone.

Further WADDA was formed, almost soley because of this case, and she did test positive - the IAAF mistakenly retested her samples and made mistakes doing so and were unable to correct them in time, thus the CAS dimissed the charges, the retested formula was turned upside down, and the didn't realize there mistake in time, after time had elapsed, the tests were cleared and were positive but it was too late. Thus WADDA formed, so thanks Merlene !

The decision on the photo-finish was a 4/3 split here by the judges in Stuttgart. Ottey dips cleanly whereas Devers twists her torso and uses her shoulder - this makes it much harder for the judges to decide where 'the torso' begins. The same happened in Atlanta. Had we the same photofinish equipment back in 1993/6 then Ottey and Devers would have shared a Gold medal!

this is true, ottey has a much cleaner dip than devers, who twists her shoulder forwards... however they both run so impressively. It's just breaks my heart to see ottey run at such speed, she even makes devers look sluggish toward the end of the race... How i wished she won...

Ottey's start had most often been bad. It cost her precious time to straighten up and stride fluently.

Pity her arm swing also seemed to deter her forward motion, or she could have flown.

One doesn't win a race with the head but with the cheat, so Mrs. Devers pretended to cheat the judges and she made it!!!

What are you talking about? They did not go by the head; they went by the chest! Although Ottey would have LEFT Devers had there been another meter, reality is, Dever's CHEST did cross the line just before Ottey's. It is very clear when you look at the video from many camera views, as they displayed the actual date of the finals. Devers won...it's that simple.

We all saw the photo taken at the finish. Gails shoulder clearly got to the line before Ottey's torso. And if you think damn-near 40 year old Ottey, who still was running sub-10.90, was clean you're a Martian.

Gail Devers won this race, she had the better lean get over it! I love Merlene Ottey, but she is not a big race performer. Case in point, before the 91 word championships she was undefeated in the 100 & 200 meters/fastest times since Flo Jo. Not only did she get beat, but she placed third. The 1996 200 meter should have been a easy win, and Marie Jose-Perec beat her in a time much slower than Merlene's best.
