  • the 90's. when rock bands sang they didn't sound like poppy prepubescent children. sure there are some around now, but it seems like you really have to dig beneath the shit to get to it, & the culture of music is really dying out in a lot of places... all of this mp3 bullshit ... I really wish I had enough money to buy all the albums I have bought on compact disc in vinyl form. & All I have around my area are "greatest Hit's" stores you'd be lucky to find something remotely rare or cool.

  • Hands down, their best album... perhaps not as many stadium fillers as other albums, but artistically the most accomplished of their compositions. They broke up the year after this. I guess they felt they'd done all they could do. Just beautiful.

  • Just beautiful

  • this song has made me cry more than once..very poignant and beautiful. Sheer genius

  • Feb 1st Melbourne Oz is gunna ROCK!

  • I remember when I bought this album, I believe I was in the 8th grade. I was raised by my severely strict christian grandmother, who didn't allow me to have any good music. I bought the tape, she found it, along with Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, Dirt by AIC, and a number of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath tapes. I managed to save this and Mellon Collie from the chopping block, and stashed them in the basement with a walkman. Small victories can mean so much...

  • My favorite Soundgarden song.......

    for now...

  • This song has an incredible non-chalance to it vocally and instrumentally.. So dreamily drifting along. And yet with the heavy rock background. Really talented production.

  • Zero Chance!!!

  • Stand up and everyone will see

    Your holiness

  • i love this song so much

  • Moments in time my friends....moments in time is all we live for. remember this as you go through your young lives as I did in the nineties. You may not be still married to the same person. Your kids can grow up and never call you. Things can not turn out as planned but at least you still have the moments in time.Ahhh if only I could get back home.Long live chris cornell and Soundgarden. Live for the moments in time my friends. Ahhhh Yess and if you look hard you can find a way back home.

  • @spartakick300 Ahhh. The 90's. I turned 20 in 1990, so I can relate. The anthem's of Generation X. What a time it was. Thank you for posting such a poignant message ;-)

  • @kmsmith1210 In1990 I was 22 God it seems so long ago yet just yesterday. Cheers man enjoy and god bless

  • @kmsmith1210 so did I.

  • why does not anyone believe in loneliness ? that's deep man

  • @warrior4just that's my second favorite lyric. My first by far is "stop your trying to bruise my mind I can do it on my own. Stop your trying to kill my time it's been my death since I was born. I don't remembrer half the time if I'm hiding or I'm lost BUT ...I'm on my way.." Then my 3rd favorite is "Looking for a pedestal that I can put you on and be on my way..."

  • @mlynn1231

ur first favorite is indeed a burdened state of mind that's hard to express. it might as well be another favorite for mine...good stuff )

  • @mlynn1231 I'm guessing your absolute favourite song would be Searching... :D

  • @mlynn1231 No, it's Zero Chance Ironically! But back when that album came out Searching was my favorite song.

  • born without a friend and bound to die alone bitches

  • @lilkidmart Damn, you're right!

  • This song makes me cry

  • so sad, so beautiful...

  • music will never be this good again...not with guys like beiber wayne brown jeezy and all that gay shit crowding the scene

  • this song reminds me when i was a liltle guy when my whole family would really do things together now days just became distant nothinng like good memories :)

  • This is one of my favorite Soundgarden songs. Chris is one of the greatest lyricists.

  • @BlackSabbathory you're right and may i say thats a great screen name you have, very clever

  • @ghostwhiskey thank you!

  • @BlackSabbathory anytime

  • So glad I got into this band when I was a teenager, even tho 'grunge' was long dead. Their albums still mean alot to me. The lyrics on this song are some of their best, "Why doesnt anyone believe in loneliness??"

  • @haribo687 hell yeah man theres nothing like this music anymore . atleast we got to enjoy it for what it was.

  • has zack de la rosa been disliking all of soundgardens videos again? whatta guy

  • who after this song would even dislike it, makes no sense . wait i know who.justin beiber best part at 2:54

  • I think that one dislike was timberland

  • Such a sad song, makes me feel I'm not the one going thru this. Thank you Soundgarden, for sharing such feelings.

  • @PabloPJ86 thats what music is all about and no,you're not the only one at all. feels good doesnt it?

  • I love this song, there is just so much emotion, soul, and raw energy in it, it's just amazing 5/5!

  • One of the greatest bridges.............the way he holds "loneliness....and then holinessssssssssssssssssssssssssssss"

    I quiver!!!

  • One low life doesn't like this. SMH

  • @sgmailman15 good we don't want him/her aboard anyway

  • they say if you look hard

you'll find your way back home

    born without a friend

    and bound to die alone

  • peanut butter and jelly.

    butter and toast.

    Fire and wood.

    sheets and beds.

    music and chris cornell.

some things are meant to be together.

  • @lavits59 Let us not forget about Kim , the master of alternative rhythm ;)

  • @InfiniteGravity he was lead

  • @TheRis81 So what are you saying? That he didn't write the rhythm? :P

  • @InfiniteGravity chris cornell is rythum guitarist numbnutz.... whether or not he wrote the rythum to theis track is neither here nor there, chris is RYTHUM, kim is LEAD. I hope that puts that to bed....

  • @TheRis81 Haha. Chris just stands there with a guitar in hands. Can we agree that Kim's lead/rhythm guitars and Chris is rhythm? I mean, I'm sure if you took the guitar out of Chris's hands the song would sound the same :D. Let's face it, he's not much of a guitarist. Oh yeah, and you spelled "rhythm" wrong.

  • @InfiniteGravity is that how you spell 'rhythm'? interesting.... i was looking at my spelling of it and it didnt look right, but i didnt bother checking it out lol. yeah soundgarden is a collective effort isnt it? even ben shepherd and matt cameron contributed lyrics and whole songs in some cases.... cornell is not a great guitarist but it it still reads, kim lead, chris 'rhythm' (happy?)

  • @TheRis81 You're so right -Soundgarden is a collective effort. Couldn't say it better myself. I'm 30 and I love them more than ever. I'll be honest, I think Shepherd is Totally underrated -I find he wrote the best Soundgarden songs personally. Actually I think he wrote this song and Switch Opens, An Unkind, but Applebite( I pretty sure Cameron) -amazing tune. The important thing is that we're die hard Soundgarden fans :D It's good to know some people are still listening to great music.

  • @InfiniteGravity i'm 30 too, remember watching the video to 'black hole sun' at about 14 and being blown away, something about soundgarden that just clicks with me.... going to see em at the sydney showground, one of those bands i wish i'd caught years ago though.... oh well bring it on!

  • @TheRis81 Yeah eh? The dirty thirty haha! Wow, hope you have a blast dude! Never seen them. I did see Dime Bag 6 shows prior though. That whole thing still grinds my gears.

  • @InfiniteGravity there was a gronk on the black hole sun vid claiming that was their only good song.... god some people suck aye? ;-)

  • Phenomenal song. Sounds like PJ, but better.

  • @BlackSabbathory it doesn't sound like pearl jam. don't ever say that about soundgarden dude

  • @Soundgarden8497 Yes, it does.

  • @BlackSabbathory get your ears checked and mind read.

  • @Soundgarden8497 My ears are fine, it's okay to admit that a song by one of your favorite bands sounds like another band. Doesn't make it any less great. 8497 must be your birth date.

  • @BlackSabbathory wow you're a fuckhead. it's actually the years soundgarden were active prior to 2010.

    whatever

  • @Soundgarden8497 Uh huh, I'm sure.

  • @BlackSabbathory the only thing you're sure of is that you love cock

  • @Soundgarden8497 You want to step outside? It wouldn't be the first time I've had to beat the shit out of a 13 year old. Let's go.

  • @BlackSabbathory you love 13 year old cock

  • i so love this song,,chris is the best singer,,hand,s down,,

  • Still sounds as good as ever. Beautiful chorus. They ended their career in the '90s with a bang. Too bad they had to reform and fuck it up.

  • @ManilaSyndicate lol. yeah, okay.

  • goosebumps, lol im getting old but i know GOOD music! Thankyou soundgarden for expanding my love for music!

  • Timeless? Yes of course!

  • i need this song like a drug. great fucking tune

  • amaizing voice.chris cornel is some of the bets voices in the rock move

  • 1 person with no soul!

  • INCREIBLE!!!!!! LONG LIFE CRIS CORNELL

  • huwaw what a good song :)

  • cock suckers not premitted to liten!

  • you all a bunch of peach smelling dusche bags! Liberal in nature and salsa loving mexicans!

  • this song moves me on so many levels. it's funny how they weren't getting along so good at this point in their lifespan, but were still able to churn out some pretty incredible tunes.

  • @YertleDaTurtle yeah...I think this one is by Ben Sheperd. I'd have to check the liner notes, but yeah, I think this is one of his contributions. He also wrote an awesome song on Bad Motor Finger, Somewhere (In your dreams) I think that's what its called. I lost that cd in a wild and crazy move... :(

  • forget selling faith through your tunes just make music derrrrr your religious trend is so offensive to loving caring people that would rather not think there a part in all that's evil in this world engineers and christians are to blame for evertyhing thats evil or not working in this world of mine

  • forget selling faith through your tunes just make music derrrrr

  • 2:54 till the end....pure bliss.

  • i can come back here in 3 years and its Still standing, Sound Garden - Legacy

  • This is a friggin GREAT song. I'll never get tired of hearing it.

  • When I first heard of the Chilean disaster that trapped some 30-40 miners underneath hundreds of feet of dirt... I literally thought ..."Zero Chance" of survivial!! Well... that proved not to be the case. All miners were rescued without major injury, a true miracle! The song and lyrics are eriely similar to that event. Take a look and listen and decide for yourself?

  • Lol, this comment board is full of trololol

  • They say if you look hard, you'll find your way back home.

  • i dont know what....but is a good feeling when i listen thios fucking track!

  • I want to live a thousand years in the 90's. Does that even make sence?

  • @1AlphaMeTalHeaD That's poetry!

  • @1AlphaMeTalHeaD

It makes perfect sense to me, I feel the same way.

  • @1AlphaMeTalHeaD Everything but "sence." lol

  • @1AlphaMeTalHeaD alot of sense, but not very much sence.

  • @1AlphaMeTalHeaD same, but considering we dont have time machines, theres pretty much ZERO CHANCE (*slap on the knee*)

  • @1AlphaMeTalHeaD No thanks. I'll just keep the music and my new 15 mpbs internet connection. You can have AOL. :P

  • I really want to Karaoke this song, really really well, just once. Bu I am just a lowly bass player.

  • @BenZeneProject nothing low on the bass..hehe besides the frequenzy ;) cheers mate, im a bass player aswell

  • melancholic song... yes... melancholic indeed...

  • who's the idiot who rated this a thumbs down??? Music hater!

  • why chris.....why walk away from me now.....why when I'm like this.....why again and again this happens to me............I can't stop crying........maybe I should just die......

  • this is such a stunning sound! <3

  • Not to exaggerate, but I think this is one of the most masterful mucical pieces ever written: music, lyrics, vocals -- all work together to create something greater than the sum of the parts. Magic. I've been wearing this song out for the last couple of months. Gets better everytime I hear it.

  • @bugatti57sc

I bought this album new but rediscovered it when I burned everything to itunes. Love the whole thing.

  • I think I hear a little zep in there....listen careful.....yep there it is

  • One of my most favorite album cover this is... What a great song... I think this song was what Cornell based in when he wrote much of his solo stuff... Some of the Audioslave tunes sound like this too..

  • Screw music of today. No soul, no legacy. Music like soundgarden never dies. They played music for the music. Not the money and not for the fame. I wish i could have been born 10 years earlier so i could have seen bands like this in their prime. Bought this CD just a few days ago. Completely hooked. best 15 bucks i ever spent.

  • @vikingdude17

Amen~ thank the Gods for Chris, Kim, Matt, and Ben

  • @vikingdude17 I saw all these bands. Soundgarden, Nirvana, AIC, Radiohead... and Soundgarden was awesome. Chris played Like Suicide by himself...I got to tell you, that was the greatest song I ever heard him play. It was sick. There is a record you can get that has an acoustic version of Like Suicide...I think one of the singles from Superunknown if you own a record player. I have a huge record collection. I always bought Record, CD, and Tape of the bands I liked back in the day.

  • @also always loved how Chris Cornell would help other groups. He drove 2 hours after getting a call from Jerry Cantrell when AIC was working on sap. Chris is on Right Turn. Just flat out awesome!

  • @vikingdude17 It was a great time. I remember seeing S.Garden with opener TAD in 94. 17 years and I still think about it. Still got the shirt. Still wear it with pride.

  • @atkinstorch your one lucky sob good sir ;)

  • @vikingdude17 hell yea man u know wats up and wat the real music is man

  • @jmdudewhatsup94

Thanks dude. and to think that my mom once said that music from the 90s was no good. Now i play it around her as often as possible

  • @vikingdude17 right on man

  • @vikingdude17 don't know how old u r but ur taste in music is cool. Grew up 2 these guys man and i still love em. i remember when superunknown came out and we bought it the day it came out and we hated it. until like the 3rd time we heard it and now it's my favorite cd of all times.

  • @43messer I'm 20, so when superunknown came out i was only 3 years old. lol. I can see that. Same happened to me when I bought down on the upside. After once or twice through i was hooked on all its songs.

  • @vikingdude17

You're goddamned right! I got it on tape back in '97; I was seventeen; best 15 bucks I ever spent.

  • @vikingdude17 Amen to that

  • @vikingdude17 Make sure you buy the CD released just before this one: "Superunknown" it;s their best IMO.

  • This song has stuck in my head every time I drink a beer since my best friend during our teenage years passed away in August2010.

    Fuck a duck.

  • Fucking chills, make me want to cry whenever I hear this song. Thank the spaghetti god for Soundgarden/Grunge.

  • orezmusic,

I agree -- and I was the worst offender. I wrote off loads of bands that didn't suit me at the time, for picayune reasons sometimes. Now I LOVE a lot of bands I never thought twice about, and I kick myself for blowing the chance to see them perform live when I could have.

  • 2000 had a decent year.. disturbed blew up, godsmack was huge, korn, slipknot, you name it... 2001 when rock music started going down hill.. im always gonna be a 90's rock person though.

  • @rcraig37854 ya the drumming sounds a lot like Bonham's drumming in Ten Years Gone and probably some of their other slow jams

  • @Domino1309 neil peart named matt cameron his favorite drummer of that time. nice compliment. peart is amazing seen them being rush of course 7 times going for #8 soon.peaceout

  • the title of this album and this song always reminded me of Zeppelin's In Through The Out Door

  • O mg! 2.54 - 3.23 might be the best thing happened to music ever!!

  • This is real music. We need it back.

Like someone said down there, this last 10 years have been horrible for music.

  • we just need good music, good lyrics, good bands! Better bands, the music is fucking dying with shit like rap and emo shith fucking crap!!!!

  • This is one of their most beautiful tunes. The UK press really wrote Soundgarden off when this was out. They were discarded as being yesterday's sound and out of touch with what was happening.

I knew it wouldn't take many years to see which stood the test of time. May the Melody Maker remain forever buried in it's own stinking pile of shit. Fucking hack journos with their constant bitching and trying to wreck bands careers.

  • This awesome songs it's a bridge that link the end of Soundgarden and Euphoria Morning the Cornell solo album.

The structure, the sound and lyrics are very similar to Euphoria Morning which I consider a truly masterpiece.

  • @KessonD It's good to hear That someone else likes Euphoria morning!

  • The lyrics to this song are actually pretty depressing... but for some reason, it always cheers me up when i'm feeling sad.

  • Muse?

  • @Beardatron what do you mean by that?

  • @dahlia533 Someone said they don't think there's any decent music around at the moment, that afte grunge we now have a pretty miserable music period ahead of us that seems to have no end to it. I think that now the world is in another shitty period of economics etc that decent music will again rise up .. look how many grunge era bands have reformed!!!

  • @Beardatron like which ones beside soundgarden? maybe mudhoney?

  • Comment removed

  • Eddie Vedder is a great singer and definitely enjoy Pearl Jam, but I prefer Cornell about a 1000x over. His lyrics, voice and songwriting are second to none in my opinion.

  • @schism206 I think Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder are like two halves of the same voice. They compliment each other wonderfully.

I also really like Euphoria Morning. That is one of the most underrated pieces of Cornell's career. Some amazing songs and some of the best vocal perfomances he's ever turned in.

  • Sounds like Pearl Jam on this song but I don't care because I like both Soundgarden and PJ and they're like friends or something.

  • "Why doesn't anyone believe in loniliness?" This song is amazingly profound! Indeed, we have more and better reasons to believe in lonliness. Only a blind, alienated, insensitive, ignorant, and indifferent being can suppose that this world is the land of milk and honey! It is a corporative principle that people loves to bought! Actualy... human world is crap! Why one should be other way than lonely and worried for the humanity!

  • I got to say this song is great but with all respect this song is a copy cat version of "Black". Believe, Pearl Jam is way better!!!

    Rock On Dudes!!!

  • @richierich19333 Chris doesn't slur his words like Eddie does. I appreciate the clarity of Chris's singing.

  • @RicebowlPranks

Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell are both on vocals in Hunger Strike

Check out: Temple of the Dog - Hunger Strike

For a similar themed song, check out Skid Row's Breakin Down (for the movie supernatural horror movie The Prophecy - see it):

    watch?v=Vpre1CrOnPs

  • @tigerone1970 Thank you so much for the suggestion! I can't believe I never heard about Temple of the Dog until now. Thanks again!

  • @RicebowlPranks

    That's great! :)

  • @RicebowlPranks

I know , i'm talking about the melody and beat.

It's very similar to "Black" from Pearl Jam.

All seatle bands have something in common and something they relate at.

    ;)

  • I'm not trying to insult Soundgarden, but they definitely sound like Pearl Jam in this song. All the Seattle grunge bands influenced each other!

  • @RicebowlPranks

And the (future) band members collaborated on Hunger Strike.

  • pls guns n roses noooooooooooooo!

  • this song made me cry.. soundgarden is just the greatst music ever, thank you.

  • Just epic. :]

  • If you love this song, don't forget to check out:

    Soundgarden - Tighter & Tighter

    watch?v=SHmBz9T7ml0

  • I cannot even find words to describe Soundgarden. They are more amazing than words depict. ILY SOUNDGARDEN AND OTHER 90'S BANDS!

  • this song strikes a chord with me...emotionally....

  • this whole album does....

Down On The Upside had deep meaning.

  • I wish my heart cud beat in rhythm with this songs beats...... Cornell is in his element

  • this is the best song ever!

  • Kinda sounds like Temple of the Dog, which is pretty cool I reckon. Wish I could play bass for this bass player :P

  • Probably the best , or one of their best and probably by the bass player

    ;p

  • Best songs ever!!!

  • Matt Cameron is by far the best drummer ever existing!

  • One of the best written songs both lyrically and musically.

  • I miss the 90's...Soundgarden is the greatest grunge rock band of all times...and Chris Cornell the greatest vocalist alive!!!!!!

  • no i love soundgarden and Chris but im gonna have to go with AIC and Layne Staley on the Greates

  • AIC and SG are tied for #1 for me.
