And besides, what if your computer crashes and you download and saved all the movies? You would have to re-download everything again. I told myself few yrs ago when LimeWire was out; it took forever to download. So yeah; I dunno if it could be Illegal? I dunno if you are able to re install the Disc on the same computer or if you get a new one I do not think ya can. So tough luck with that! I just buy em in Discs
well if you are at a school or library, you cannot download movies on their computer. And overall, BluRays are Protected against Copyright law and other illegal stuff. So I would spend the money on the real thing. Right now I have 50 Blu Rays and 50 DVDs ^^I just picked up the Star Wars collection on BluRay for $90 @ Walmart ^^
Blu-Ray wins. Here in the UK with our internet it would take 2 hours just to download 1 movie. And that's just the movie- it won't have any of the extras or features like you get with BR. Convenience? How hard is it to put a disc into a player?
Well I'm a fan of quality and sound so I'm for Blu-Ray right now until direct download can provide the same quality, sound & usability as Blu-Ray is, can and does!!
Personally, I'm always disappointed when a DVD doesn't have an audio commentary track. Those things can be priceless, especially if you're in to doing video or film. Generally you don't get all those extras with digital files, but maybe someday...
Digital download all the way. I have almost 200 movies on a hard drive next to my TV, I could just imagine how much space that would take up having DVD box's on a shelf, and I must have saved hundreds being that digital is cheaper.
there is nothing like just typing avat... and my TV's like, ah you want to watch avatar.
your still searching your shelf, and no pre roll ads.
But if your a collector than there is nothing like having a massive shelf full of DVD's, each to there own.
Better quality, cheaper (based on how I shop) ability to sell, trade or give away. No need for hard drive space along with a backup drive. Tangible copy wins.
Sometimes I really wish chris would talk a tad less dramatic. I love watching his videos, but there was no reason to say "over" that many times....@1:18
i dont have fibber networt there i live. so the speed is not great. but one fing you can see about bluray and direct is bluray is limited and dont have how much data as the network so i would go with direct download
what I do, I just copy the dvds and store on my mac rather than doing downloads. I know thats naughty but why should i not be able to? I am not burning the copes to disk. just am storing on my mac in iTunes instead of having to insert a dvd and to have them available on my iPod touch when out and about.
I would likely use direct downloads but connection is crap. but costs only 15 UK pounds for unlimited and are planning to switch to even cheaper unlimited. but hopefully it will not be any worse
Remember, Remember the 5th of November the gun powder, treason, and plot. I know of no reason why the gun powder, treason, and plot should ever be forgot.
Blu-ray because ISPs are leaning towards capping. Even with just netflix's so/so quality they are saying that people are sucking up too much bandwidth
xboxlive6 is right.. a Blue Ray is on average 50gb.. a direct download at 50gb (for quality video of course) would take hours and hours. Not very convenient. Plus Blue Ray has better quality. Hands down.
Chris made a wonderful metaphor here, that I think makes a whole lot of sense. "We're going to find ourselves in a world where the internet is a given, just like the air we breath."
It all degrades any way dude, the electrons will start to separate on a digital file (but if you own the original code it will be fine) and magnetic HDDs start to looks their magnetism over time or crash HOWEVER blu-ray discs, DVDs and CDs are held together on optical layers with glue and gradual separate over time (disk rot) and in film preservation they never use discs to store media and DVDs have horrible compression quality. I still prefer tapes like VHS and Beta-Max. but Nothing ever lasts.

lol, well i guess there are more blind people than i thought lol. Makes you wonder why so many people even bother with buying hi quality tv. Physical media dead haaaaaaa??? hey locker boy isnt all that hardware considered physical media(hard drives, ssd, and so on)?
The weakness with direct download is getting to the data. What does one do if access to the internet is lost. What happens if the little power brick for your modem or router decides to die?
i like the fact that i have a small penis because unlike chris my penis is not too big. and there is nothing wrong with watching stuff for free and downloading it for free. you call it stealing i call it free. who cares!
also remember people who pay for high speed internet can download an unlimited amount of data it would just take a really really long time to get it. but blue ray has its limits. also you can download blue ray quality movies and such because there are a lot of cool people who ripe the disc and store on the internet.
blue ray will die once everyone has a device for watching media online or downloading it. even people who dont own pc's,smartphones, tablets can watch something online or download something using the public libraries pc's. how do you think i was able to watch harry potter half blood prince before it hit dvd. i downloaded off the web and saved it to my flash drive and then watched it on my friends big screen Tv.
I think the future will be streaming movies. Youtube should change rental to buy meaning if you buy the movie in youtube you be able to just watch it as many times as you want with your account.
in my opinion, blu ray will die in the near future. It will die once people realize that comcast isn't the only service provider out there. there are other providers like tech savvy etc that give u 300gb usage, and about 25mb download speed without throttling if u download movies.
So yea, blu ray will die once fast download speeds for digital media becomes the norm.
Blu ray quailty stomps all over any download i have ever seen. the audio on my sound system is amazing. Most downloads are compressed 720p with a 2.0 sound track .......... All formats dies blu ray will be around for a good while. I wont buy any movies via digital might as well use net flix.
@SanyaIVLitvyak where are you getting your movies? I have a few off psn and itunes and they dont come close. I really don't belive they look the same as blu rays are on a 50gb disc. Most downloads are only 4 or 5 gbs tops.
@MrEliotlawrence good point; if you're in the sticks or the boondocks somewhere, you are going to go with BluRay. Until we have high speed Internet everywhere, not just the major cities, BluRay will still exist. Then again some people in the city still use VHS.
@ukendcx2000 Exactly! Until BT (UK operator for the phone lines) sort out FibreOptic cable for rural areas, then i am sticking with Blu-Ray or just High quality DVDs
either the one cost money i go for blu-ray most poeple don't had computer direct download save your money, take too long to download movies with high quality movies
Direct download may win if you have a crappy home theater. I'll stick to bluray anytime. The bandwidth and codecs make it better, both video and audio. Of course you can download a 45GB bluray rip illegally.
You can download blu-ray quality movies from Internet. They are usually between 32gb-64gb so it only takes aprox 20 minutes to download. That is less time than it takes to drive to a video rental store and rent a blu-ray. So I would say in modern countries like Sweden where we have fast Internet connections there is not advantages with blu-ray.
When you get fast Internet connections in the US you will think the same.
True. Shame Netflix and other sites can't offer same or even close to the same service as pirate sites. Like if you get a pirated movie you don't have any downsides like tons of commercials and random junk DVDs and BDs is filled with.
87 minutes. But a lot of people has access to faster Internet and most of the movies is around 20gb i size. Biggest movie I know is Avatar in 3D that is 47gb big.
Maybe not in the 3rd world country you live in. Try googling for "worlds fastest Internet" and click the first link. There is a lady with 40gigabit connection here in Sweden and besides that there is a lot of people that is offered higher speeds than 100mbit connections especially in the cities.
@Marcus8958 ok, but i'm speaking of connection for personal use, maybe in you country exists connections over 100 megabits per second, but remember that in sweden the population is 9 millions of people, very very little compared to a country like mine 60 millions.
they should do what they are going to do in Australia get full control of the Fiber optics network to the Government and lease it to ISPs then the government controls and makes the rules it works out better for us in Australia because of the NBN (national broadband network) 100mbps fiber to every home in Australia.
Physcal media isnt dead YET the new virson of windows will come out and still comes out on what 3 seconeds 3...2...1... A DVD not yet does windows start handing out a certificate that you scan into your computer and it automaticly downloads the update for you GRANTED you can still download windows 7 leagaly off of microsoft and if you have a product code LEAGLY off of a pirating/sharing site One more point. The OS you have running on your computer is on PHYSICAL MEDIA a 20 GB hdd for example
I believe that the internet is slowly destroying our media industry. With todays technology, digital replication has created a huge problem. Think about it, when was the last time you bought a complete album in support of your favorite artist? Many artists are only releasing single Eps these days because full albums are not selling nearly as well as they used to. with many consumers only buying a tenth of of the albums, artists struggle 10 times harder than they used to make it on just records.
In a perfect world where rogers does not cap me with this artificial shit. And If I personally had a way to store it. I would want a "digital copy" of the blu-ray. But seeing as I can not download more than 4 45 gig movies that won't be happing soon.
I like direct download but I prefer blue ray. The sound quality alone should be enough.
In direct download you don't really own anything even if you store it.
Also Chris you say disks are dead so why are movie theaters still open if we could just download movies and watch them. Oh wait the experience. I think when people watch a movie its for an experience not for just the sake to watch it. Blue Ray and RIP HD dvd gives the closest experience to theaters.
Blue-Ray is good for physical (yes, disk) safe-copies... INCLUDING the direct downloads I buy. What if my external hard-drives fail? I have DISKS... phisical disks... And yes, I still have some VHS's even though I have some in digital... So after all, you want to save your digital information in phisical BLUE-RAY, not in a cloud, thanks!
HD download on iTunes for new release is around $20. Blu-ray+DVD+Digital Copy new release is around $25. 5 Bucks extra to have the video in 3 different ways as well as on a physical disk is definitely a better deal.
I like my movies with awesome quality so I go blu ray but if the direct download stuff was in way better quality then I would go that way but if the Internet gos down just say you always have that blu ray you could watch
But hey. If you direct download it, don't you have a space on your computer to store that data? I think a harddisk is still physical media, right? So.. if it's external, it's just as portable as a BR. I Think we're getting into a world, where there just ain't built-in media drives, just a universal standard port for everything. Yep, direct download isn't getting obsolete so quick as are these.. emm, removable medias, so I vote for downloading.
@forevergeeky I live in London.. I'm on 02 and I have a 250GB cap.. I'm not complaining, but when I get a HD PC and TV, I'll start complaining due to Everything being at least 8GB now, if that's video game downloads or HD streaming and downloads.
Fuck internet. Mine is sooooo slow i couldnt even comprehend to start thinking of download a blu ray movie. That would take toooooo long. Disks forever
well if I really like a movie or a show and i mean really like it I'll be the bluray or dvd but if I'm on the fence about a movie then I might rent it weather it be redbox or digital renting.
@igeekone Direct download is not streaming, broadband bandwidth has nothing to do with anything other than how long it will take to download it. Audio and video quality of a BR rip and a BR disc are near identical.
@LOTRzagorath Well, I could add that I have a second line in my house running optus cable DICOSIS 3.0, where I sync at 100mbits...only downside is uplink is just crap. (the plan only gives 1TB data)
The unlimited plan isn't hard to come by at all though, it's 60$ a month lol. So really it's pretty normal pricing.
What sucks is how much data costs at a data center if I want a dedicated server. Looking at $200+ for 4gb ram and 200gb bandwidth, just pathetic.
I think most people just pirate their movies through a torrent..i mean most people will watch it once anyways.not that i do indeed do that.i just dont watch movies cause most that come out suck anyways.i do buy games cause i love to support that industry.but if i would watch a movie...i would pirate it.not that it is oke to do but i dont realy feel any worth in buying a disc or renting it.while pirating is free and does not hold me up to restrictions.
I Personally prefer physical media for most things, yes I dopwnload music and watch most of my video on Youtube which is far quicker and convenient but I still like discs for games and stuff I'm gonna use in the future. Can't say downloads aren't going to prevale soon enough and discs will go defunct but I am gonna take the remaining time with discs.
i really don't see the difference in picture quality with bluray. i can understand using bluray discs for the storage but i don't see a big difference between 720p and1080p bluray. personally i think it's a scam to get people to pay more money for a more expensive television or monitor.
I rip my own Blu-rays to H.264 and I have the best of both worlds. Also, you should look into the original theatrical Star Wars releases that were released on DVD a couple years ago. No Special Edition/extra content added in.
Blu ray is obviouslt not dead, Streaming does not work, especially in Australia where the fastest net 90% of us can get is 8mbit per sec because we use third world country cabling from the 30's.
Mmm I don't see it move to quickly yes DD is easy. But usually the quality is limited. Think using only low bandwidth audio tracks and using more compression then the original.
For me Blu- ray is for keeping a movie with me.. To store it and enjoy it.
Living in holland we don't have services that stream, at least not allot so.. we kinda are going to have to work with blu-ray.
if they used bluray to put on whole seasons of shows :O it would be awesome.
i still like getting physical, untill online places are abil to set up something like steam. i don't think i would really get much on them. considering alot of places that sell movies here have huge prices :O may as well get the bluray disk for 3$ more than digital.
I am actually a big fan of DVD, i don't own a TV over 30" and i find hat they upscale quite well! I have watched upscaled DVD's on 50" TVs and they still look nice! I also find they are cheap - i can get any movie over 2 years old for £3 or less if i shop around (thats less than a couple of beers here) .and can be easily ripped. Blu-rays tend to be more than 3X the price of DVDs, and although i know they are technically better, i don't think they would benefit my experience that much.
I would stick with Blu-ray, and that is because of commentary, and being about to watch it anytime I want. There is nothing wrong with digital download but you may not be able to get different versions on the movie you want. And guys please stop talking crap about Star Wars! Soon Lucas will be dead and then all you will hear about is REMAKES. If you want it on Blu-ray just make your own copy with which ever version you like. The original movies are on DVD you just have to look for them.
Blu Ray is the way. No brainer that if you hold the movie in your hand you have it in your hand. If you stream then your at the mercy of the bandwidth retreiving annoyances. It's frustrating to say the least. As far as Star Wars on Blu Ray I agree Thats why you need to get it on Laser Disc thats right Laser Disc. Untouched laser quality. Physical media will always be superior, I don't care if its a cd,record,cassette,8-track,reel to reel,78, or that cone that was destroyed on your show yearsago
you have a small penis thats why you never get out of your house

Maybe not in the 3rd world country you live in. Try googling for "worlds fastest Internet" and click the first link. There is a lady with 40gigabit connection here in Sweden and besides that there is a lot of people that is offered higher speeds than 100mbit connections especially in the cities.
Marcus8958 4 months ago
@Marcus8958 an isp offer a 40 gigabit connection for personal use?
Federico84 4 months ago
@Federico84
In general no. But that lady got it because of testing hardware. What normal ISPs like Bredbandsbolaget offers 250mbit/s to normal users.
Marcus8958 4 months ago
@Marcus8958 ok, but i'm speaking of connection for personal use, maybe in you country exists connections over 100 megabits per second, but remember that in sweden the population is 9 millions of people, very very little compared to a country like mine 60 millions.
Federico84 4 months ago
they should do what they are going to do in Australia get full control of the Fiber optics network to the Government and lease it to ISPs then the government controls and makes the rules it works out better for us in Australia because of the NBN (national broadband network) 100mbps fiber to every home in Australia.

Many artists are only releasing single Eps these days because full albums are not selling nearly as well as they used to. with many consumers only buying a tenth of of the albums, artists struggle 10 times harder than they used to make it on just records.
guitars4life123 4 months ago
In a perfect world where rogers does not cap me with this artificial shit. And If I personally had a way to store it. I would want a "digital copy" of the blu-ray. But seeing as I can not download more than 4 45 gig movies that won't be happing soon.
Firdaush0 4 months ago

Blu-ray+DVD+Digital Copy new release is around $25. 5 Bucks extra to have the video in 3 different ways as well as on a physical disk is definitely a better deal.

having physical copies enables me to sell them afterwards
BTXXXXXXX 4 months ago

Please, americans, stop complaining about a 250GB cap. Here in the UK we have ISPs with a 30GB/mo cap. Our whole family barely use 150GB/mo!

@forevergeeky I live in London.. I'm on 02 and I have a 250GB cap.. I'm not complaining, but when I get a HD PC and TV, I'll start complaining due to Everything being at least 8GB now, if that's video game downloads or HD streaming and downloads.

I could never buy a digital-download of a movie, No extras are available on a DD for starters, So no commentaries or making-of.
Plus I love having a Physical copy for collecting.
Same goes for Books, I could never read a Ebook, I just don't get the same enjoyment as I do having a Physical book in my hand.

DD comes nowhere close to the visual and audio quality of Blu-ray. DD needs cheap limitless broadband for it to take off.
igeekone 4 months ago
@igeekone Direct download is not streaming, broadband bandwidth has nothing to do with anything other than how long it will take to download it. Audio and video quality of a BR rip and a BR disc are near identical.
scrupuloussam 4 months ago
Man, so many people complaining about these "artificial 250 GB restrictions". In Australia we pay for the Gigabyte, just like data from your telco.
As for all the stuff about the future of physical media. I agree fully. It's on the way out, and FAST.
LOTRzagorath 4 months ago
@LOTRzagorath =/ I have unlimited in Australia with tpg. syncing at 20Mbits No issues.
josipis 4 months ago
@josipis True, but do you not have to specifically seek out an unlimited plan?
Plus, relatively speaking, Australian Internet is far slower than what they get. Here's hoping the NBN fixes that!
LOTRzagorath 4 months ago
@LOTRzagorath Well, I could add that I have a second line in my house running optus cable DICOSIS 3.0, where I sync at 100mbits...only downside is uplink is just crap. (the plan only gives 1TB data)
The unlimited plan isn't hard to come by at all though, it's 60$ a month lol. So really it's pretty normal pricing.
What sucks is how much data costs at a data center if I want a dedicated server. Looking at $200+ for 4gb ram and 200gb bandwidth, just pathetic.

I think most people just pirate their movies through a torrent..i mean most people will watch it once anyways.not that i do indeed do that.i just dont watch movies cause most that come out suck anyways.i do buy games cause i love to support that industry.but if i would watch a movie...i would pirate it.not that it is oke to do but i dont realy feel any worth in buying a disc or renting it.while pirating is free and does not hold me up to restrictions.

iPodTouch5311 4 months ago
I Personally prefer physical media for most things, yes I dopwnload music and watch most of my video on Youtube which is far quicker and convenient but I still like discs for games and stuff I'm gonna use in the future. Can't say downloads aren't going to prevale soon enough and discs will go defunct but I am gonna take the remaining time with discs.

direct download, I dont notice any difference in the blueray, but for star wars I bought the blueray as I want a hard copy
ForceUnleashed83 4 months ago
i really don't see the difference in picture quality with bluray. i can understand using bluray discs for the storage but i don't see a big difference between 720p and1080p bluray. personally i think it's a scam to get people to pay more money for a more expensive television or monitor.

REPOMAN24722 4 months ago
Mmm I don't see it move to quickly yes DD is easy. But usually the quality is limited. Think using only low bandwidth audio tracks and using more compression then the original.
For me Blu- ray is for keeping a movie with me.. To store it and enjoy it.
Living in holland we don't have services that stream, at least not allot so.. we kinda are going to have to work with blu-ray.

i still like getting physical, untill online places are abil to set up something like steam. i don't think i would really get much on them. considering alot of places that sell movies here have huge prices :O may as well get the bluray disk for 3$ more than digital.

I'm a fan of direct download. I don't care about quality, or stereoscopic crap. lol
wolfeedarkfang 4 months ago
I am actually a big fan of DVD, i don't own a TV over 30" and i find hat they upscale quite well! I have watched upscaled DVD's on 50" TVs and they still look nice! I also find they are cheap - i can get any movie over 2 years old for £3 or less if i shop around (thats less than a couple of beers here) .and can be easily ripped. Blu-rays tend to be more than 3X the price of DVDs, and although i know they are technically better, i don't think they would benefit my experience that much.
231karl 4 months ago
I would stick with Blu-ray, and that is because of commentary, and being about to watch it anytime I want. There is nothing wrong with digital download but you may not be able to get different versions on the movie you want. And guys please stop talking crap about Star Wars! Soon Lucas will be dead and then all you will hear about is REMAKES. If you want it on Blu-ray just make your own copy with which ever version you like. The original movies are on DVD you just have to look for them.
commandereddy 4 months ago
Blu Ray is the way. No brainer that if you hold the movie in your hand you have it in your hand. If you stream then your at the mercy of the bandwidth retreiving annoyances. It's frustrating to say the least. As far as Star Wars on Blu Ray I agree Thats why you need to get it on Laser Disc thats right Laser Disc. Untouched laser quality. Physical media will always be superior, I don't care if its a cd,record,cassette,8-track,reel to reel,78, or that cone that was destroyed on your show yearsago
djthunder1970 4 months ago
As long as there are movie collectors there will always be a physical media
