  • "Be nice or leave"

  • it's videos like this, that change you. Just a few minutes, can really make you think. let's see Micheal bay do that! Mr Okra, i do think i love you.

  • Terrific. He's Great. It's Great. How lucky we are to have New Orleans.

  • This IS New Orleans! Beautifully shot and edited too.

  • nice work andre, tg and crew!

  • Wonderful documentary! It really captures the spirit of Mr. Okra, what he does, and what he thinks about it. He's simple, the way it should be. It also captures the spirit of a great city exploding with tradition and culture! Sometimes I ask myself if I was born a couple generations too late. America's traditions are slowly dying out: it would be a shame to live and see people like Mr. Okra go.

  • I want to hug Mr. Okra!! and get some fresh cauliflower and pineapple from that dang truck!

  • great portrait

  • BEAUTIFUL, THANKS SO MUCH! :)

  • Loved it.

  • isnt he just the coolest !!

  • Wow! Years ago, I saw this truck and smiled. Love the film!

  • short, simple, and sweet like some fresh fruit...ha

  • It is nice to make films about neighborhood icons like Mr. Okra. Good job!

  • 6:10 damn that guy on the left has no face^^

  • They really captured Mr. Okra in this film. It's touching, great work.

  • Mr. Okra is the man.

    Can I get soundtrack?

  • thats one cool ol' man! :D i love mr.okra!

  • I bet when Mr. Okra was in his 20's he was "somethin else!" He has such a zest for life and an awesome personality. I love me some good ole' down to earth folks!

  • Lovely guys and lovely country.

  • i get my fruit and vegetables from him every week

  • i love this! he seems like a real good guy. makes me glad to be from the south.

  • officially homesick

  • This was great and this mr. Okra should be a requirement for any city town or other.

  • I love this

  • written by? What's to write? Is this a documentary/interview or fiction? There's got to be a better phrase here.

  • The subtitles are incredibly distracting. I found myself reading instead of listening and missing a lot of what Mr. Okra had to say. The experience was much better when I hid the bottom of the frame so that I couldn't see the subtitles. I also think it insulting-- it implies that this guy is so different from the viewer that we need a translation to understand him. I hope that's not true for most people. It wasn't for me.

  • I was thinking the same.

  • Did you ever think that some people have a hard time hearing certain sounds as they age and someone who has never been around an accent like that may have trouble understanding all the words he says.

  • hey great work... Can't wait for the next installment....REALLY brings back memories of NOLA----AND FARMERS Market (glad to hear him mention THAT too)) =][=

  • I think this was very well made! It uses a great combination of video, stills, voice over to communicate the spirit of Mr. Okra and a small part of his city.

  • This was great. i enjoyed it very much. very well done. ty for sharing

  • I really liked the film. Mr. Okra was a very colourefull person.

  • Great Short. It really brought to light the depth of character that is "Mr. Okra". Editing, sound, and visuals all top notch. It entertained and held my interest for the whole short. Keep it up T.G. Herrington your work paid off. :)

  • The cinematography was superb. Great visual details in characteristics. You made the content work and it holds interest. Very impressive!

  • This was legit!

  • mmm, great little film. i am wishing that we had an Okra man here in my little town becase i don't get out to often and not far... of course everything would freeze here in the wintertime.

    thank you for sharing :)

  • great film.. get to see a piece of life i would otherwise not known.. masterpiece!!! thanks!@

  • Kinda makes me hungry.

  • This was a good portrait of a unique cool old guy...I bet he gets lots of women in the 9th Ward....He's the vegetable pimp of New Orleans.....New Orleans won't be the same when he's gone, you definitely can't say that about most people...It's good to see some stuff that is good actually getting into Sundance, they've been letting some stuff that is total crap get into Sundance these days, some of those short films on youtube are horrible...

  • From someone in New Oleans, I hear him almost everyday, and he is more than a wonderful man who sells veggies. He is part of New Orleans, and It wouldnt be home without him. New Orleans wasnt New Orleans after Katrina until the Saints played in the dome and I heard him advertising his apples and bananas. This film's procedes are goin towards him and to help him buy a new truck, because his is breaking down.

  • I had mixed feelings about this. At the beginning I found myself thinking 'So what. He sells veggies from a truck.'

It's not until later when I get to learn more about him that I began to care about the story at all. His history. His father working at the French market. His love for his truck. How he faired through Katrina. I LOVED that part.

The exposition takes too long. He is such a character though that I find myself just watching him and loving every moment of his quirkiness. GREAT JOB!

  • grandeeeeeeeeee....vai mr okra!!!

  • Seems like a cool dude

  • Wttffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff

  • That didn't make any sense. Nice try, though.

  • It helps us forget about the d-bags like you

  • @johnnytastetest

i bet you've had many "Come next year I'll be..." in life.

    those who can't do, bitch.

  • @DocNOproductions Amen XD

  • @johnnytastetest Shut up you disrespectful asshole. Why don't you go back to your bridge, troll? No one wants your rude comments about american characters. If you don't like it, don't watch it or comment.

  • @johnnytastetest It shows the average life of an american working hard to make a life. It is a little comical, but it does hint on Orleans history about the french market as he told how it changed from a food market to a little tourist spot. It shows that he was a native of New Orleans, and how he lived everyday and his influences on the people and city.

  • @johnnytastetest

there we go.. a conversation about the piece.

i have to agree with jtt that this short doesn't really pass the storytelling test - i can't really say i remember anything in particular about it after a couple of days. that said, it was brilliantly shot and edited - and that my friend, along with connections, is how you get into sundance.

  • @johnnytastetest ... i don't think you understand what it takes to make a film, even a short. Clearly, a lot of work went into this. This is not the type of thing you can slap together in a day. Trust me. For what ever reason, you don't like it. But it's well, made, and endearing.

  • @johnnytastetest

It's a 12-minute short film what did you want them to cover Hurricane Katrina, the meaning of life, how the Universe was formed, all in 12-minutes??? The people who made this film made it for their own reasons not to make you happy....Do you even understand that???.....You're no film critic....I doubt you could make a movie this good in an entire lifetime because you're too busy trying to be a youtube film critic to get off your ass and do anything creative for yourself....

  • As someone else mentioned in response to my comment(s), this film "doesn't really pass the storytelling test." The captions don't give it much context; a voiceover doesn't give any additional insight. He's just some local personality.

I will say that there are some cool-looking shots throughout the movie. The cinematrographer definitely gets my approval. Nice bright colours. I'm just sayin', one day with a shotgun mic and a camera that can shoot in 1080p and you could do this.

  • god bless mr okra

  • well thank god for subtitles!! haha i loved this, a true spirit of the south.

  • Something else... No offence with all respect, if he sells so many fruits and vegetables then how did he came obese?

  • Cause he sells them all and doesn't eat them :P

  • I believe there is a MUCH more better and more sensible answer.

  • Can't believe you took that seriously >.>

  • Look mac, if I'm joking joke with me if I'm serious please be serious with me... WOULD YOU KINDLY do that?

  • @TheGunshipAC130 hahaha he is srs bizness

  • Type proper english.

  • BTW what is an okra? Interesting video!

  • @TheGunshipAC130

Okra is a nutritious green (or purple) vegetable pod that is harvested at 3-5 inches in length and is used in gumbo. It is high in protein (for a veggie) and has a mucilaginous quality that some people don't care for.

I like to add it to soup for body and flavor. I also like to saute it with onions and tomatoes as a side dish.

It reminds me of cactus (nopal) because of the slime but nopal has a bit more bite. Aren't you glad you asked?

  • Not really, since I don't believe we have Okras in Kuwait.

  • Listen to the end of the song "Squirm" by Dave Matthews Band. Mr. Okra is in it!

  • Born n raised in New Orleans. No place like it. Shout out to Mr. Okra!

  • This is so much fun! What a character. Congratulations on taking "Mr. Okra" to Sundance. I read about the flick today in a colum in the DesNews and it mentioned this was available on YouTube. Glad to have the chance to see it.Great Job! Best of luck to Mr. Okra himself, and his family.

  • I have never been to New Orleans but I would love to go and meet Mr. Okra. Fabulous video!!!

  • I loved this short because you could almost feel the culture of the real New Orleans.

Makes me wanna visit...but then I'd be condoning the French Market. :P

  • I love on the truck: REFRESH yo'self!

  • Mr okra is gangsta...5 stars

  • haha i love the song he sings. i have tangerine! lol kudos

  • Great movie. gives us an insight into he good ole' days, I guess.

  • What a great spirit this old fellow has! He doesn't have much, but he makes a good life and he's happy with his part in New Orleans. I wish we had something like it - I would sure buy from him anytime!

  • lovely short film, lively Mr. Okra. makes me wana visit New Orleans someday. Be safe, from Kuwait

  • Video is put together well. Good quality for the most part and decent audio. Character is kind of fun. I have a lot of respect for the hard work put behind this video; however, it was a little slow but fun to watch nonetheless--I would have to suggest making it a little shorter. Great job overall.

  • Always nice to see a different perspective.

Really enjoyed the music. The cinematography was excellent. Thanks.

This film teems with all things life. Lovely.

  • how old were you when you came out the closet ?

  • this man sounds like a blues but his belly sounds like a broken drum:)

  • I love hearing him drive around my neighborhood. I got oranges and bananas...

  • At the end of his life, the deadliest gunfighter of the Old West is given a choice: Hell or redemption. He chooses redemption and God's Archangel transports him to modern day Los Angeles to serve bloody, frontier justice on the worst dregs of society.

  • God job I like it !

  • nice video!!

  • be nice or leave lol

  • wow awesome work, love it

  • A program like this should be feautured on TV stations all over the world. Great job!

  • Nice filming in a beautiful setting. However, I question the term "writer" on this project. To film someone's conversation and memories, to me, does not qualify for a writer's credit.

  • This video was amazing! I hope it wins! :D

  • This is great.
