When it comes to weaponry good martial artists can handle themselves even though they do not wish it. It is funny but a lot of MMA fighters are also based in kung fu, karate, and mauy thai. Karate VS MMA in street who would win? Hard to say, i mean i go to karate and when we fight we cant jump on eachother and wrestle someone down and knee him in the face, karate is more like "distance" fighting, use lot of legs and that. MMA would not be the dominated fighting sport if it hadnt wrestling, Karate learns more to "hold out". and teches many kicks, which are very helpfull and some cool blocks. MMA teaches those things but not as deep like in karate.
what most people dont realize is u cant use karate in mma because of rules like no eye gouging and groin strike. mma is therefore no good for self defense, bjj is. real self defense teaches u to strike the eyes joints throat and groin period...
I have done traditional Martial Arts for many years and I also practice MMA. For to long the traditional guys hide behind the excuse of we practice for life and death. If you hide behind that excuse and don't learn to get on the floor and practice all practical self defense and stay in top physical shape you better get a gun. Actually Lyoto machida does Shotokan Karate. I have learned alot of the same stuff and have seen tons of his moves streight from class, the difference is, hes AMAZING!!! He is very good, and knows how to use Shotokan footwork VERY well.
Yes you are right. He karate is pure karate with a very high level understanding of irimi. In order to understand and see this one would have to train for atleast 10 plus years in a true shotokan dojo and not a watered down JKA dojo.

Yes but if you have done the same style of Karate as Lyoto machida like I have you can see some text book Karate in his stand up. He is a mixed martial artist, and Jujitsu dosn't count agenst him seeing as that is ground fighting and used when he isn't using Karate. He learned some MuayThai, but he has done Karate since he was 3 years old and it's obvious what gives him the edge and what style he likes best...

To win the sport of MMA, it's best to train FOR MMA.That's why MMA fighters win MMA fights, and why Karate (when trained for real like in Okinawa) is meant for fighting people with weapons or not weapons to defend yourself and family from Samurai. Karate was made to fight samurai when swords became outlawed to Okinawans by the Japanese. All the Karate "weapons" you see like nunchucks or kamas are actually Okinawan farm tools, that's what they had to fight with, so they used it, not MMA duels

@GuamKomudo I think your right because I come from an okinawa school and we have jiu jitsu as part of our curiculum. I don't know why ppl think we only do the kicking and punching o.0 Karatedo means the way of the empty hand and ground fighting is a part of that. Most of these guys fighting in karate dont come from credible schools. Your right McDojos... xD

To win the sport of MMA, it's best to train FOR MMA.That's why MMA fighters win MMA fights, and why Karate (when trained for real like in Okinawa) is meant for fighting people with weapons or not weapons to defend yourself and family from Samurai. Karate was made to fight samurai when swords became outlawed to Okinawans by the Japanese. All the Karate "weapons" you see like nunchucks or kamas are actually Okinawan farm tools, that's what they had to fight with, so they used it, not MMA duels
